PARKING IN THE VILLAGE – A REQUEST FROM SPETISBURY PARISH COUNCIL At present, it is illegal to park on the pavement unless there are notices allowing it but it is understandable why villagers choose to do so. However, please remember that you should always leave space be- tween your parked vehicle and any barrier so that there is room for a wheelchair or pram/pushchair to pass. This is particularly an issue when there is a function at the Village Hall and also outside several properties in the village. Harvest in Spetisbury

Harvest Supper in the Village Hall with entertainment by S.O.D.S. was a really enjoyable event and a good time was had by all. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the evening.

The Harvest Festival Service, designed with young people in mind, took place in the church the following morning and was well attended. The church looked beautiful and thanks should go, as always, to our team of talented flower arrangers.

Donations from the Church Service and from the Harvest Supper have been donated to the Blandford Food Bank.

Defibrillator Training – the clerk is to contact SJAB and Red Cross as SW Ambulance Training have not responded. Speed Indicator Device – a meeting has been arranged with the Highways Road Safety Officer. Traffic using South Farm Lane – Clerk has contacted Highways who advise that there is nothing that can be done to stop this as plastic bollards will be ineffective. 16. Date of Next Meeting: Monday 2nd December 2019 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall Committee Room. 17. Matters of Information and Interest: The Chairman advised that he thought it may be a good idea for the residents to consider smartening up the village with a view to entering Britain in Bloom next year. There are complaints about noise and light pollution emanating from the Wessex Water works in Tarrant Crawford. To be raised as an agenda item in December meeting. Cllr Kerby advised that Highways are still costing the culvert repairs before any patching can take place. This will be a significant engineering project likely to cause severe disruption in the village. The Meeting closed at 8.50pm.

12 CHARLTON MARSHALL PARISH COUNCIL

Summary Draft Minutes of Parish Council meeting held on 5th November 2019 Attendees: Cllr Tim Hill (Chair), Cllr Pam Higgins, Cllr Liz Park, Cllr Andrew Kerby, Marie Dando (Clerk) and 2 members of the public Apologies Cllr Barrie Cooper, Cllr Beverley Seaby Open Forum - 2/2019/0870/HOUSE – 362 Bournemouth Road – The resident attended the meeting to clarify the background to the planning application discussed at the October meeting. Joseph Cherrett from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks attended the meeting as work is to be carried out in the Blandford area to upgrade transformers and switches and replace poles. The work is due to start in the next week and last for 6 weeks. Power outages will be kept to a minimum and businesses will have 30 days’ notice of the work and residents will all be written to 7 days before any work commences. Joseph advised they would be contacting all of those on the Priority Services Register and stressed the importance of vulnerable residents registering for this service. Use of the 105 emergency telephone number for electricity emergencies linked to supply was also highlighted. Paul Derrien from Dorset Council Housing explained Community Land Trusts. This subject has arisen as Hallam Land Management has indicated that they are prepared to consider this for the proposed development to the West of Bournemouth Road. The development will be expected to provide 40% affordable homes (split 70% rented and 30% shared ownership) and the Community Land Trust will give residents considerable say as to who occupies these properties. A public meeting would need to be held to inform residents and this would be arranged in due course. The offer of a Community Land Trust at this stage will not influence the granting of any planning permission on the site. Cllr Higgins advised that she had been contacted by a resident who was concerned regarding private hedges overhanging footpaths. A brief article will be included in the next Newsletter. Planning Applications Received: 2/2019/0626/OUT – Land to E389797 N104244 Bournemouth Road – Amended proposals for the development of land by erection of up to 70 dwellings. – the amendments do not alter the views of the Parish Council and the previous comments should be resubmitted. 13 NEWS from the church

Dear friends, It seems Christmas has been coming for several months now. The first decorations I saw this year were in September. Can anyone beat that, I wonder?! December is always a busy month in the church as we prepare for and then celebrate the birth of Christ on that first Christmas morning over 2000 years ago. However you spend Christmas, I hope and pray it will be joyful and peaceful this year. On that first Christmas morning the angels declared to the shepherds that Christ’s birth was ‘Good news for all people’. There is bucket loads of fake news, bad news, biased news around and easily available to each one of us …. but Christ’s birth is ‘Good News for All’. That is why we celebrate Christmas. Everyone is very welcome to join the Church at any of our services. Enjoy your celebrations!

With my good wishes to you all, Carolyn Rev. Carolyn Couzens Priest-in-Charge, The Bridge and Lower Stour Benefice

The Mackrell Charity

14 Nature Notes for December 2019 Ann and Tony Taylor 857336

In the last week of October we moved our hens into the greenhouse, so they would be warmer over the winter and we could give their normal accommodation a thorough clean. On lifting the floor of their hutch we found there was a large ball of leaves and other dry bedding below it, containing a hibernating Hedgehog. After some rapid construction work using various old bits of wood and bricks, we were able to lift the whole nest into a suitable new home without disturbing its occupant.

On another late October day, lots of birds seemed to have responded to the changing season on the same morning. There was much calling from Robins, Dunnocks and Blackbirds in our garden and the neighbouring ones, as dispersing young birds or migrants from further afield upset the local territorial order. Newly arrived flocks of Redwings were calling overhead at dawn and Skylarks and Meadow Pipits were also making their way south.

Around the same time Goldcrests were pausing to feed in our still leafy Apple trees as they moved through, and a Firecrest appeared among them. Alerted by its different call, we were able to appreciate the striped face, bronze-tinged shoulders and generally brighter colours of the Goldcrests’ rarer relative. A few pairs breed in Dorset but one normally only heard them singing in the tops of tall conifers, so the best time to see the full beauty of Firecrests is in late autumn and early winter, when the young birds disperse and migrants arrive from the Continent. Ivy-covered trees are popular with them, providing good shelter and plenty of insect food.

Why parents need to vaccinate their children

Vaccination is important, because:

vaccines are the most effective way to prevent serious infectious diseases diseases like smallpox, polio and tetanus, that used to kill or disable millions of people, have gone or rarely seen. the UK has lost its measles-free status 3 years after the virus was eliminated in the country. if people stop having vaccines, it's possible for infectious diseases to quickly spread again.

Sadly, anti-vaccine stories are being spread through social media and may not be based on scientific evidence, putting your child at risk of a serious illness.

Things parents need to know about vaccines: VACCINES DO • protect your child from many serious and potentially deadly diseases • protect other people in your community – by helping to stop diseases spreading to peo- ple who cannot have vaccines • get safety tested for years before being introduced – they're also monitored for any side effects • sometimes cause mild side effects that will not last long – some children may feel a bit unwell and have a sore arm for 2 or 3 days reduce or even get rid of some diseases – if enough people are vaccinated

VACCINES DO NOT • cause autism – studies have found no evidence of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism • overload or weaken the immune system – it's safe to give children several vaccines at a time, reducing the amount of injections needed • cause allergies or other conditions – all the current evidence shows that vaccinating is safer than not vaccinating • contain mercury (thiomersal) contain ingredients that cause harm in such small amounts – but ask your doctor if your child has known allergies such as to eggs or gelatine

So, please don’t ignore the appointment letter telling you when your baby or child is due for a routine vaccination. Hang up on fraudsters - Don’t get caught out by Brexit scammers: If someone unexpectedly phones you claiming to be from a ‘Brexit team’, before asking for bank details to arrange advance payments for medications or other items, don’t be fooled. Hang up and make enquiries in your own time to check they are who they say. 16 Spetisbury Twinning Association

This year Spetisbury Twinning Association celebrated 30 years of twinning with Le Vast. The association has extended its membership to include Charlton Marshall and surrounding area and 20 villagers including 5 new members visited le Vast in September and all agreed it was a most delightful trip. There was a visit to a 16th Century Chateau and gardens, an ani- mal park and a tour of a German WW2 battery. Plenty of food and drink and entertainment including traditional music from a Hunting Horn group in full hunting dress. We also visited the site where a WW2 aircraft was shot down in 1940 with the loss of 3 British airmen. Flowers were laid at the memorial there in their memory. We now look forward to hosting our French Twinners in 2020. If you would like more information about the Twinning associa- tion contact Liz Smith 01258 450193.
