National Football League October 29, 2019 the NFL OFFERS FANS A National Football League October 29, 2019 THE NFL OFFERS FANS A CHANCE TO HOST THE FAMED VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY IN THEIR HOMETOWN The NFL to Bring The Lombardi Trophy and a Game Party Weekend to a Fan’s Hometown as part of #NFL100 Experiences of a Lifetime Since its initial naming in 1970, the Vince Lombardi Trophy has been hoisted each season by the Super Bowl champion. Now, the famed championship trophy will make the unprecedented path to one lucky NFL fan’s hometown before it ultimately awaits the winning team’s embrace at Super Bowl LIV in Miami. The NFL announced today its latest #NFL100 Experience of a Lifetime, “Lombardi in Your Hometown,” which will send the Vince Lombardi Trophy to one winner’s hometown during NFL Wild Card weekend. There, the trophy will be the guest of honor at a watch party for the winner and their friends, family, and neighbors. The contest is part of a fan-focused series of extraordinary experiences during the NFL’s 100th Season that pay tribute to the generations of fans, players, and communities that built and continue to support the league today. “Long before his last name symbolized football greatness, my grandfather taught the core belief that the group is greater than the individual and that people grow stronger together through football,” said Joe Lombardi, assistant coach with the New Orleans Saints and grandson of the famed Packers coach. “My family is proud that the Lombardi trophy not only serves to crown Super Bowl champions, but will also serve to bring a special set of fans together in one winner’s hometown.” To enter, fans can post a picture or video demonstrating what they’ve done to deserve a chance to have the Vince Lombardi Trophy in their hometown and tag @NFL and #NFL100Contest. The contest is live now through November 12 (11:59:59 p.m. ET). For official rules, visit NFL.com/100/contests. “Our centennial celebration gave us an opportunity to bring the NFL’s most iconic symbol of team success directly to a group of fans for the first time in the league’s 100-year history,” said Pete Abitante, NFL VP of Special Projects. “This once-in-a-century experience will help launch our 2019 season playoffs as we continue to celebrate our fans all the way to Super Bowl LIV in Miami.” Media – For inquiries, please contact Jon Schwartz, NFL [email protected] .

  • The Pioneers
Gridiron Glory: Footballs Greatest Legends and Moments is the most extensive and comprehensive exhibit featuring America’smost popular sport ever to tour. Many of the objects included in the exhibition have never been outside the walls of their home, the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The artifacts are representative of the great moments, great players and coaches and milestone moments of the sport over the last 100-plus years. Below is a partial list of the rare and historically significant artifacts that will be presented in Gridiron Glory: Footballs Greatest Legends and Moments. The Pioneers This section looks at the early days of the sport when a very unorganized, rough and tumble game was played in empty lots and other makeshift venues. It captures the moment when the NFL was born, when the rules of the game were created anew on every field and when one player of staggering ability, Red Grange, “barnstormed” across America to drum up fan support for a sport in its infancy. Artifacts featured include: 1892 Allegany Athletic Association accounting ledger – Pro Football’sBirth Certificate This accounting ledger sheet from the 1892 Allegheny Athletic Association documents football’s first case of professionalism. “Pro Football’sBirth Certificate” has never before been displayed outside the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jim Thorpe’sCanton bulldogs Sideline Blanket In 1915 the Canton Bulldogs signed Jim Thorpe to a $250 per game contract. Thorpe, the first big-name athlete to play pro football, was an exceptional talent and major gate attraction. His outstanding talent enabled Canton to lay claim to unofficial world championships in 1916, 1917 and 1919.

  • Super Bowl Sunday
Super Bowl Sunday Today is Super Bowl XLIX and I will watch the game in the comfort of my living room as will billions around the world. I will have seen 48 on TV and have had the privilege of attending one Super Bowl in person. I am a life long NFL fan and NFL Season Ticket holder. The game has grown from humble beginnings to a full fledged unofficial holiday in this country. It brings people together like no other day on the calendar. Not Christmas, Thanksgiving or the 4th of July. None of these days can compete with this day in uniting people of every age, race, religion, and economic background but sports in general has a way of doing this and it is wonderful. I wish everyday could be like this. People who don’t know one another will talk about a topic other than the weather. To some, it may be day long parties being with friends and family while actually caring little about the game itself, but rather the celebratory things surrounding it. To football fans it is the culmination of a 6 month long journey that starts with 32 teams that comprise the National Football League from July Training Camps, August Pre-Season games to the Fall 16 game regular season schedule and gliding into the 3 weeks of playoffs in January that ultimately determine today’s game participants: The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. Needless to say fans worldwide (and especially both cities) are ravenous in anticipation of the kickoff in just over 4 hours.

  • Who Was Jim Thorpe?
PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn PITTSBURGH STEELERS Team History The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded by Arthur J. Rooney on July 8, 1933. Now the seventh-oldest franchise in the NFL, the Pittsburgh team was known as the Pirates until 1940. The Steelers struggled for their first 40 years without winning a championship of any kind until they won the AFC Central division title in 1972. Two years later, the entire sports world cheered when Art Rooney, one of world’s most popular sports figures, received the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the Steelers’ victory in Super Bowl IX. After so many years of frustration, the 1970s Steelers began one of the most incredible streaks in sports history when they earned eight consecutive playoff berths, seven AFC Central titles and four AFC championships from 1972 to 1979. The Steelers became the first team to win four Super Bowls and the only team to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice. The team of the decade of the 1970s became the first AFC team to win its division 10 times since the NFL’s 1970 merger. The list of Pittsburgh Steelers heroes of the 1970s is long but it begins with Head Coach Chuck Noll, who took control of the team in 1969. Such stars as defensive tackle Joe Greene, linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert, quarterback Terry Bradshaw, cornerback Mel Blount and running back Franco Harris were the backbone of a team that many insist was the finest ever in pro football. All, including Noll, were accorded membership in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in their first years of eligibility.
