I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Cinema Across Borders: National Differences in Sámi Filmmaking in the Nordic Countries Master of Arts, 2017 Rachael Crawley Film + Photography Preservation and Collections Management Ryerson University The cinema of the Sámi people, of northern Fennoscandia and Russia (Sápmi), has flourished since the turn of the millennium. This thesis summarizes the history of Sámi film, its current infrastructure, and the differences in filmmaking trends between the three Nordic countries of Sápmi. It also includes a list of all known Sámi productions and organizations funding Sámi film. By exploring the differences in funding in the Nordic countries, it examines the relative lack of Sámi film production and infrastructure in Sweden, as compared to Norway and Finland. -

Photo: Royal Norwegian Embassy 85% of the population in Kautokeino, which lies in the vast region of Finnmark have Sami as their native language, and a third of the people work with the reindeer, which are also the main industry. The Sami culture is strong and true even in modern society today. The famous Easter Festival in Kautokeino is an annual event with historical traditions. Easter was traditionally the time of the year in which the Sami, from all parts of the region Sami, gathered in the capital of the reindeer, Kautokeino. They celebrated the end of a long, cold, dark winter, and all participated in religious festivals and wedding season. The weather is adverse but the known solar cycles encourage a land where the sun does not set for five weeks in summer and doesn’t get rise for six weeks of winter. 1. SYNOPSIS Based on historical facts. For centuries the northern Scandinavia was inhabited by the native Sami and their reindeer. In 1852 the modernization reaches the desolate village of Kautokeino, governed by Ruth, a ruthless liquor dealer. One of the tribes of natives, headed by a young woman named Elen, refuses to pay an unjust debt to Ruth, which constitutes the beginning of one of the most dramatic episodes in the history of northern Scandinavia. -
Revoicing Sámi Narratives

Abstract Revoicing Sámi narratives investigates the relationship between storytellers, contexts and collective tradition, based on an analysis of North Sámi narratives published in the early 1900s. This dissertation “revoices” narratives by highlighting the coexistence of different voices or socio-ideological languages in repertoires and by considering Sámi narratives as utterances by storytellers rather than autonomous products of tradition. Thus, this study serves as an act of “revoicing,” of recovering voices that had been silenced by the scientific discourse which enveloped their passage into print. Narrators considered “tradition bearers” were interviewed or wrote down folk narratives that were interpreted as representative of a static, dying culture. The approach chosen in this thesis highlights the dynamic and conscious choices of narrative strategies made by these storytellers and the implications of the discourses expressed in narration. By taking into account the intense context of social change going on in Sápmi at the time the narratives emerged, as well as the context that includes narrators, ethnographers and tradition, the analysis demonstrates that storytelling is an elaboration that takes place in negotiation with tradition, genres and individual preferences. The repertoires of four storytellers are studied according to a methodological framework consisting in critical discourse analysis from a folkloristic perspective. The analysis underscores the polyphony of the narratives by Johan Turi, who related with skillfulness of tradition by taking position as a conscious social actor. -

Sami Indigenous Spirituality: Religion and Nation- building in Norwegian Sápmi SIV ELLEN KRAFT University of Tromsø Abstract In March 2008, the university library in Tromsø celebrated the opening of what they referred to as an ‘indigenous room’. A collection of Sami literature was moved from its previous geographical and cultural context to what is today considered the more relevant company of American Indians, Australian aborigines and African peoples.1 Indica- tive of the increasing institutionalisation of the Sami as an indigenous people, the debate over what it means to be ‘indigenous’ is today important to Sami research, political strategies, cultural activities and religious creativity. In an attempt to take such innovations seriously, the article discusses some of the religious dimensions of Sami na- tion-building resulting from the ongoing processes of indigenisation. More specifically, I deal with a project structured by the international grammar of nation-building, which shares in the qualities of a civil religion and is at the same time shaped by ‘indigenous spirituality’. Although a fairly recent construct, what I refer to as ‘indigenous spirituality’ is nevertheless a significant global discourse, developed primarily through the UN and international law. According to this perspective, indigenous peoples are the children of Mother Earth, and as such are opposed to and differentiated from the religions and worldviews of the ‘western’ world. Keywords: Sami, nation-building, indigenous, nature spirituality, Mother Earth Commonly referred to as the homeland of the Sami, Sápmi covers an area extending from northern Scandinavia to northwestern Russia, including parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Among the estimated 84 000 self-defined Sami currently living in these areas, approximately 50 000 live in Norway (Niezen 2004); it is this population, with an emphasis on the North Sami area, which constitutes the empirical basis for this article. -

The story of Henrik Kulblik and the forest Finns is much darker than that. And it’s a Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian tale. This place, in the Norwegian province of Hedmark less than ten kilometres from the border with Värmland in Sweden, was where his forefathers came in the early 1600s.
