Long John Silver and the Hispaniola Narrator: Three weeks after Jim Hawkins escapes the pirate gang with Billy Bones’ treasure map, he arrives in Bristol on a hot Sunday morning. What a city. The gateway to the Oceans of the World. Tea, sugar, cotton, coffee, slaves - aye, slaves - fill the streets and the docks. The great masts of a dozen fleets tower over the quays. Sailors, travellers, the rich and the poor throng the busy streets all of them hungry for money or food - or adventure. Jim has a note - he must find a Mr Silver who will show him to the Squire’s ship. Jim finds him all right down on the quayside - and there’s a shock, for as he comes up behind the man, he sees he has only one leg. Could this be the pirate, so feared by Billy Bones? Jim: Mister... Silver... sir? Long John Silver: Silver? Long John Silver you be intending to say, I’m sure, and who may you be? Narrator: Jim stares up. Tall and strong, with a face as big as a ham, intelligent and smiling, Long John Silver winks down at him. Jim relaxes - this man’s no pirate. Jim: Jim Hawkins, sir. Cabin boy to the new ship. Landmarks Preservation Commission November 16, 1993, Designation List 255 LP-1887 ANTHONY CAMPAGNA ESTATE 640 West 249th Street, The Bronx. Built 1929-1930; architect Dwight James Baum. Landmark Site: Borough of The Bronx Tax Map Block 5914, Lot 315. On June 2, 1992, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Anthony Campagna Estate and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 3). At the request of the owner, the hearing was continued to December 8, 1992 (Item No. 2). Both hearings were duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. At the two hearings, there were eight speakers in favor of the designation and none in opposition; the then owners took no position. The current owners have not taken a position on designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary The Anthony Campagna Estate was built in 1929-30 in the Riverdale section of the Bronx as the home of this prominent Italian-born New York City builder and philanthropist. The work of Dwight James Baum, a leading New York City architect praised for his carefully conceived and executed suburban and country residences, the house is modeled after Italian villas, an unusual prototype for New York City. The elements of the landscape design, by Ferruccio Vitale, an Italian-born landscape architect, and his partner Alfred Geiffert, Jr., were also based on Italian prototypes, in keeping with the design of the house, and won the 1934 gold medal in landscape architecture from the Architectural League of New York. The design of the house and grounds, on a site overlooking the Hudson River to the Palisades, is one of Baum's most impressive and is a major example of 1920s architectural eclecticism by a recognized master of the genre. -

Within this wilderness was an extensive network of trails, many of which were created by the migration of the buffalo and used by the Native American Indians as hunting and trading routes. These primitive trails were at first crooked and narrow. Over time, the trails were widened, straightened and improved by settlers for use by horse and wagons. These became some of the first roads in the new land. After the American Revolution, the National Government began to realize the importance of westward expansion and trade in the development of the new Nation. As a result, an era of road building began. This period was marked by the development of turnpike companies, our earliest toll roads in the United States. In 1792, the first turnpike was chartered and became known as the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike in Pennsylvania. It was the first road in America covered with a layer of crushed stone. The boom in turnpike construction began, resulting in the incorporation of more than 50 turnpike companies in Connecticut, 67 in New York, and others in Massachusetts and around the country. A notable turnpike, the Boston-Newburyport Turnpike, was 32 miles long and cost approximately $12,500 per mile to construct. As the Nation grew, so did the need for improved roads. -

What the Sarasota County School Building Program (1955-1960) Teaches Us Author: Nicholas Paley Graduate School of Education George Washington University Washington, DC 20052 [email protected] Word Count: 10,270 Abstract: The Sarasota County School Building Program (1955-1960) is revisited through a detailed examination of how architects and educators collaborated to design an innovative group of public schools that provided opportunities for the transformation of learning space. This multi-dimensioned examination is grounded in a historical contextualization of the school building program, in visual and discursive archival analysis related to three of the schools considered especially notable, and in the integration of contemporary voices of some of the teachers, students, and educational employees who worked in these schools. A concluding section discusses four key lessons of this artistic-educational collaboration that might be fruitful for educators to ponder as they seek to create the kinds of community-based learning environments that optimize students’ educational experiences. Introduction From 1955-1960, one of the most remarkable public school building programs in the history of American education took place in Sarasota, Florida. In less than a decade, projects for nine new elementary and secondary schools or additions were commissioned, designed, and constructed --and almost immediately--were being acclaimed as some of the most exciting and varied new schools being built anywhere. -
