We will look at how each text on our syllabus represents or explores tensions surrounding: the relationship between the individual and society; concepts of justice, moral action, and ethical responsibility; the power struggle between heroes and villains; national borders, community membership, and cross-cultural understandings; and social investments in particular forms of identity and images of embodiment. In this course, you will have the opportunity to develop and strengthen your skills in close reading, academic writing, critical thinking, and researching in the field of English. We will focus on topics in comics studies, including the relationship between image and text in graphic narrative, and the development, adaptation and subversion of canonical characters and stories.     “Mutant Hellspawn” or “More Human than You?” The X- Men Respond to Televangelism JACOB RENNAKER The late owuns and early owvns witnessed the rapid increase in popularity and power of televangelists—pastors emphasizing “that old- time religion” embraced modern media, resulting in droves of Americans tuning in religiously to view their sermons. This was the golden age of Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swag- gart, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, Jerry Fallwell, and Pat Robertson. It was in this milieu that Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson produced the graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills (owvp). In a rare story where the superhero team known as the X- Men does not fight a costumed villain, God Loves, Man Kills focuses on the threat posed by Reverend William Stryker, whose vitriolic anti- mutant message mobilized Americans against mutants. In a revelatory moment, Reverend Stryker turns out to be the father of a mutant, introducing an element of both hypocrisy and irony. Such a storyline highlighted the poten- tial dangers of televangelists wielding substantial religious and political power by warning of its abuse. This story turned somewhat prophetic when in the late owvns a number of prominent televangelists were exposed for committing the very acts against which they had been preaching. God Loves, Man Kills was an active participant in the discussion of televangelism in the United States by identifying intersections between the graphic novel and public opinion during the owvns and the story forecasted the downfall of major figures in tel- evangelism later that decade. In spite of its sometimes skeptical view of tele- vangelism, God Loves, Man Kills responded to this complex situation with a heroic sense of hope that ultimately empowered its readers to make positive, lasting changes in the world.

This course will examine that legacy, focusing on the political and cultural contexts that shape superheroes and how superhero narratives respond to these contexts. In addition, as this is a Writing Through Media course, we will be exploring the myriad of different mediums creators utilize for superhero stories, including comics, animation, blockbuster films, television shows, radio shows, etc. This course will begin by introducing some of the pulp heroes that served as superhero antecedents, such as Zorro, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and the Phantom. We will then explore the relationship between the superhero and American identity, focusing on the emergence of the Golden Age of superhero comics with characters such as Superman and Captain America. This exploration will demonstrate the cultural legacy of Jewish identity on the origin of the superhero, the pivotal role superhero comics played in WWII, and the continued political relevance of these characters in contemporary American culture. The next unit will center around superheroines, beginning with Wonder Woman and the influence of first wave feminism on her genesis. Moving into the contemporary, we will look at a number of postmodern takes on the superheroine in a range of formats from independent webcomics to anime to television.

Guynes, B.A., Western Washington University M.A., University of Massachusetts Boston Advisor: Aaron Lecklider, Ph.D. Second Reader: Rachel Rubin, Ph.D. Between 1988 and 1994 American comic books engaged the politics, problematics, and crises of the AIDS epidemic by inserting the virus and its social, cultural, and epidemiological effects on gay men into the four-color fantasies of the superhero genre. As the comic-book industry was undergoing major internal changes that allowed for more mature, adult storylines, creators challenged the Comics Code Authority’s 1954 sanction against the representation of homosexuality to create, for the first time, openly gay characters. Creators’ efforts were driven by a desire to recognize the reality of gay men’s lived experiences, especially crucial in the epidemic time of the AIDS crisis.
