Services and Driving Information Yukon Checkpoints Dawson City - Population: 1,410 Teams have a mandatory 36-hour layover, and are likely to arrive in Dawson City between February 5 and 7. Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days to see teams arriving. Teams are likely to leave Dawson City after the mandatory 36-hour layover predicted between February 6 and 10. The Dawson City Mandatory Layover is also “Yukon Quest Time” in the Klondike capital! With teams’ arrivals spread out over a day or two, coupled with each team’s 36-hour stay, the entire City of Dawson City goes dog-crazy for five days! DRIVING Dawson City is approximately six hours from downtown Whitehorse, but can take much longer in bad weather. Checkpoint Services Purchase food and concessions during extended hours. No free accommodations available. All volunteers and visitors need to book their own accommodations in the local hotels. Events/Activities Dog Park Campground - visitors can walk to the Dog Park Campground across the river to see where the dog teams are camped for their mandatory layover. Visitors are welcome in the campground, but cannot enter individual campsites or disturb any of the dog teams. Their uninterrupted rest is essential during this time. Vehicles are not allowed in the dog park. Volunteers at the Dawson City checkpoint are invited to join us at our Yukon Quest Appreciation Night. COMMUNITY SERVICES There are many restaurants in town, and they are easily accessible on foot. Be sure to book your accommodations as soon as possible – hotels fill up fast! Other available amenities include: gas stations, souvenir shops, a drug store, Canada Post, etc. -

Construction Dawson City Museum started in 1899 and was completed in 1900. The WP&YR railway operated Whitehorse Brooks 1881 2-6-0 36” gauge. "Betwixt and Between" : The Anglican Church and the Children of the Carcross (Chooutla) Residential School, 1911-1954 KENNETH GOATES From 1891, when William Carpenter Bompas of the Church Missionary Society first opened his Forty-Mile mission to child boarders, the residen tial school was an important component in the Anglican clergy's program for the moral and cultural improvement of the Indians of the Yukon district.1 Though the Church of England missionaries continued their itinerant efforts among the nomadic bands and offered regular missions and day schools at central meeting places, most believed their greatest hope for the native children of the north lay in residential schools. Through repeated appeals to the Canadian government, the church secured the funds necessary to erect a sizeable facility at Carcross in the southern Yukon. Money and commitment, however, were not enough, for the boarding school concept proved at best a mixed blessing. An examina tion of clerical and government intentions and a consideration of the school children's experiences during their stay and after their departure illustrates the weaknesses of the residential format in the Yukon. The suggestion that the missionaries' efforts were of dubious or nega tive benefit to the Yukon Indians, in this case the residential school children, is not made in order to belittle the clergy's efforts or, even less, to challenge their sincerity. Instead, like much of the recent literature on native-missionary activities, this article is designed to move beyond hagio graphie descriptions of the work of these wilderness saints which have so dominated the historiography in past generations. -

2 Existing Infrastructure Assessment This chapter provides a brief description of the transportation infrastructure that serves the Yukon. Understanding the state, capacity and usage of this infrastructure is critical for the development of a port development strategy for Skagway. 2.1 Current Road Infrastructure 2.1.1 Highways The Yukon is well served with surfaced roads traversing the populated south-western part of the Territory and providing access to various ports in Southeast Alaska. EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE ASSESSMENT The main highway across the Yukon is the Alaska Highway. It originates in Dawson Creek, BC and runs for 909 kilometres (km) through the Yukon from the BC border east of Watson Lake to the Interior Alaska border at Beaver Creek. The Alaska Highway and the Haines Road were built in 1943 as military pioneer roads. They were improved during the 1950s and substantially upgraded in the 1980s. These two principal highways are well-paved and well-maintained. Other Yukon highways include the Klondike Highway from Skagway through Whitehorse to Dawson City and the Dempster Highway from east of Dawson City to Inuvik. The South Klondike Highway parallels the old White Pass trail between Skagway and Log Cabin. Whitehorse is the centre of travel in the Yukon.
