THE CONNECTICUT AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION Record of the Year 2009-2010 The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, founded in 1875, was the first state agricultural experiment station in the United States. The Station has laboratories, offices, and greenhouses at 123 Huntington Street, New Haven 06511, Lockwood Farm for experiments on Evergreen Avenue in Hamden 06518, the Valley Laboratory and farm on Cook Hill Road, Windsor 06095, and a research center in Griswold and Voluntown (on Sheldon Road). Station research is conducted by members of the following departments: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Genetics, Entomology, Forestry and Horticulture, Environmental Sciences, and Plant Pathology and Ecology. The main core program areas are agriculture (includes food safety), forestry, public health, and water and soil quality. During the recent legislative session, a patent bill for the CAES passed and was signed by Governor Rell. Effective on October 1, 2010, this law gives the CAES scientists authority to seek patents, licensing agreements, and trademarks. Legal protection will be sought for new cultivars of strawberry and tobacco plants, which are resistant to insect pests and disease problems. Analyses of seafood samples from the oil-spill area of the Gulf of Mexico, a collaborative effort with the US Food and Drug Administration, had a major impact by allowing previously closed fishing areas to be re-opened. Intensive surveys continue to monitor for the Asian longhorned beetle and Emerald ash borer, major tree pests currently present in nearby areas of Massachusetts and New York State, respectively. West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis viruses were isolated from mosquitoes. Research and educational programs are being developed to address bed bug infestations in homes, hotels, and apartments. Finally, more efficient methods of controlling invasive aquatic plants in lakes and ponds have been developed to restore water quality. The older buildings located on the New Haven campus need attention. $1.26 million in state bond funding was allocated for architectural design for the Jenkins-Waggoner Laboratory. Other funds were secured to correct roofing and other building problems in the Osborne Library and Johnson-Horsfall Laboratory. The CAES outreach programs and website have been enhanced to facilitate the transfer of new scientific information to the public. During this reporting period, there were 1,322,425 page views. Of these, 378,184 (29%) page views were recorded for CAES publications. The average duration of visits was about 14 minutes. Staff members gave 1,050 talks and interviews to civic groups and the media, and two Open House events were held to give hundreds of state residents an opportunity to meet scientists, hear presentations on scientific advancements, see experimental plots and laboratories, and to make comments on research and public outreach programs.     MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings Of The Year 2019 This is the seventeenth year that MusicWeb International has asked its reviewing team to nominate their recordings of the year. Reviewers are not restricted to discs they had reviewed, but the choices must have been reviewed on MWI in the last 12 months (December 2018-November 2019). The 128 selections have come from 27 members of the team and 65 different labels, the choices reflecting as usual, the great diversity of music and sources; I say that every year, but still the spread of choices surprises and pleases me. Of the selections, one has received three nominations: An English Coronation on Signum Classics and ten have received two nominations: Gounod’s Faust on Bru Zane Matthias Goerne’s Schumann Lieder on Harmonia Mundi Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet choreographed by John Cranko on C Major Marx’s Herbstymphonie on CPO Weinberg symphonies on DG Shostakovich piano works on Hyperion Late Beethoven sonatas on Hyperion Korngold orchestral works on Chandos Coates orchestral works on Chandos Music connected to Leonardo da Vinci on Alpha Hyperion was this year’s leading label with nine nominations, just ahead of C Major with eight. MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR In this twelve month period, we published more than 2300 reviews. There is no easy or entirely satisfactory way of choosing one above all others as our Recording of the Year, but this year one recording in particular put itself forward as the obvious candidate.     THE LEASESOF THE LAUREION MINES (PLATES 83-97) D URING the excavation of the Athenian Agora seventy-five fragments of the poletai inscriptions which record the leases of the silver mines at Laureion and the sale of confiscated property have been found. Two have already been published in Hesperia (V, 1936, no. 10, pp. 393-413, and X, 1941, no. 1, pp. 14-27). Eight frag- ments of this same series, all also found in Athens, are published in I.G., IJ2, 1582.-89. These previously published pieces have been included in the numerical series of texts here, which is arranged chronologically in so far as possible, and the data from them included in the index and chart. Amazingly few facts are known about the Laureion mines, so generally, and undoubtedly correctly, believed to have played a very important part in the rise and supremacy of Athens. What revenue did Athens get from them and how and when was this revenue collected? How were they administered? What was the term of the lease? What is the meaning of the different classifications? Who were the men who leased the mines? Any information that can be gained from these new texts is most welcome. It will be limited, by the inscriptions themselves, to the problems of the leases in the fourth century. All generalizations and conclusions are most tentative, based on the limited evidence now available from these very fragmentary texts. One or two rela- tively complete stelai from the third quarter of the fourth century, with dated heading preserved, would provide positive solutions to many questions and quite possibly solutions different from those suggested here.
