2018 MEET RECAPS SEC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 1 - MAY 11 MSU opened the SEC Championships with two podium finishes on its first day in Knoxville. Anderson Peters threw the javelin 82.04m (269-2) to break the previous SEC Championships meet record and improve on his NCAA-leading mark. Peters victory broke Texas A&M’s Ioannis Kyriazis’ three-year championship streak. Kyriazis finished second, sandwiched between Peters and the Bulldogs’ Nicolas Quijera. Quijera, the 2018 SEC Men’s Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year threw the implement 79.05m (246-4). Together, Peters and Quijera scored 16 points for MSU in the event to put their team in second after the first day. On the women’s side, Brianna Smith placed fifth to score four points in the hammer throw. She launched the implement 59.63m (195-7). Shannon Fair capped the night with a fifth-place finish and four points in the 10,000m. In preliminary round action, three of MSU’s four entries in the men’s 400m hurdles advanced to Sunday’s finals. Charles Brockman III and Malcum Tatum each broke personal bests, and Rasheed Tatham also qualified. The three all ran within 0.06 seconds of each other. Marco Arop turned in the second-fastest qualifying time in the men’s 800m, and Alon Lewis qualified in sixth for the women. SEC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 2 - MAY 12 Rhianwedd Price-Weimer, Aaron Phelps and Ro’Derick Spears joined the five MSU athletes who qualified Friday at the SEC Championships. Spears broke a 15-year-old school record in the 110m hurdles to advance. His wind-legal time of 13.65 replaces Kelvin Harris’ 2003 mark of 13.73 and would be No. 9 in the NCAA entering the weekend. He joins the three Bulldog men who qualified in the 400m hurdles last night. Price-Weimer turned in the fastest qualifying time of the day in the 1500m, while Phelps’ turn in the men’s event was complicated by a collision with 300m to go. Nearly half of his heat went down, and after reviewing the incident and subsequent protests, 20 athletes were allowed through to the final. Alicia Viveros added to her freshman record, bumping her personal best in the shot put up to 14.41m (47-3.5). In the long jump, Alexis Farley advanced to finals with a personal-best jump of 6.16m (20-2.5). Through two days, MSU advanced eight athletes to Sunday’s finals while watching nine Bulldogs score points. The men and women combined for 25 season bests in the first two days. SEC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 3 - MAY 13 Rhianwedd Price-Weimer added a conference title to go alongside her 2015 NCAA crown in the 1500m on Sunday night. Marco Arop also medaled, taking silver in the 800m while breaking his own Mississippi State freshman record. Price-Weimer was in third place entering the final 200m, but the SEC champion and NCAA leader surged through the turn and led the entire way down the homestretch. She finished in 4:18.79. Scoring in one event wasn’t enough for Price-Weimer. She capped her night with a fifth-place finish and four more points in the 5000m. In her first collegiate 5000m on the oval, she clocked a 16:42.36. Arop shattered his freshman record with a time of 1:47.45. Among Canadians, Arop is second only to former Bulldog and 2016 SEC champion Brandon McBride this year. Alon Lewis took seventh in the women’s 800m for two points. With three men in 400m hurdles final, MSU was guaranteed at least six points from the event. The Bulldogs got 11 after Rasheed Tatham and Charles Brockman III went back-to-back with fourth- and fifth-place finishes. Malcum Tatum took seventh. The Bulldog men finished in 11th with 39 points, while the women were 12th with 30 points.
