HARYANA DISTRICT GAZETTEEERS ------------------------ REPRINT OF AMBALA DISTRICT GAZETTEER, 1923-24 GAZETTEERS ORGANISATION REVENUE DEPARTMENT HARYANA CHANDIGARH (INDIA) 1998 The Gazetteer was published in 1925 during British regime. 1st Reprint: December, 1998 © GOVERNMENT OF HARYANA Price Rs. Available from: The Controller, Printing and Stationery, Haryana, Chandigarh (India). Printed By : Controller of Printing and Stationery, Government of Haryana, Chandigarh. PREFACE TO REPRINTED EDITION The District Gazetteer is a miniature encyclopaedia and a good guide. It describes all important aspects and features of the district; historical, physical, social, economic and cultural. Officials and other persons desirous of acquainting themselves with the salient features of the district would find a study of the Gazetteer rewarding. It is of immense use for research scholars. The old gazetteers of the State published in the British regime contained very valuable information, which was not wholly reproduced in the revised volume. These gazetteers have gone out of stock and are not easily available. There is a demand for these volumes by research scholars and educationists. As such, the scheme of reprinting of old gazetteers was taken on the initiative of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Haryana. The Ambala District Gazetteer of 1923-24 was compiled and published under the authority of Punjab Govt. The author mainly based its drafting on the assessment and final reports of the Settlement Officers. The Volume is the reprinted edition of the Ambala District Gazetteer of 1923-24. This is the ninth in the series of reprinted gazetteers of Haryana. Every care has been taken in maintaining the complete originality of the old gazetteer while reprinting.

  • A Study of Food and Feeding Habits of Blue Peafowl, Pavo Cristatus Linnaeus, 1758 in District Kurukshetra, Haryana (India)
International Journal of Research Studies in Biosciences (IJRSB) Volume 2, Issue 6, July 2014, PP 11-16 ISSN 2349-0357 (Print) & ISSN 2349-0365 (Online) www.arcjournals.org A Study of Food and Feeding Habits of Blue Peafowl, Pavo Cristatus Linnaeus, 1758 in District Kurukshetra, Haryana (India) Girish Chopra, Tarsem Kumar Department of Zoology, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra-136119 (INDIA) [email protected] Summary: Present study was conducted to determine the food and feeding habits of blue peafowl in three study sites, namely, Saraswati plantation wildlife sanctuary (SPWS), Bir Sonti Reserve Forest (BSRF), and Jhrouli Kalan village (JKAL). Point count method (Blondel et al., 1981) was followed during periodic fortnightly visits to all the three selected study sites. The peafowls were observed to feed on flowers, fruits, leaves of 11, 8 and 8 plant species respectively. These were sighted to feed on Brassica compestris (flowers, leaves), Trifolium alexandarium (flowers, leaves), Triticum aestivum (flowers, leaves, fruits), Oryza sativa (flowers, leaves, fruits), Chenopodium album (flowers, leaves, fruits), Parthenium histerophoresus (flowers, leaves), Pisum sativum (flowers, leaves, fruits), Cicer arientum (flowers, leaves, fruits), Pyrus pyrifolia (flowers, fruits), Ficus benghalensis (flowers, fruits), Ficus rumphii (flowers, fruits). They were also observed feeding on insects in all three study sites and on remains of the snake bodies at the BSRF and JKAL study site. The findings revealed that the Indian peafowl, on one hand, functions as a predator of agricultural pests but, on the other hand, is itself a pest on agricultural crops. Keywords: Blue peafowl, Food, Feeding Habits, Herbs, Shrubs, Trees. 1. INTRODUCTION Birds are warm-blooded, bipedal, oviparous vertebrates characterized by bony beak, pneumatic bones, feathers and wings.

Original language: English CoP18 Prop. 51 CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA ____________________ Eighteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties Colombo (Sri Lanka), 23 May – 3 June 2019 CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSALS FOR AMENDMENT OF APPENDICES I AND II A. Proposal The proponents propose delisting of Dalbergia sissoo DC., from CITES Appendix II as it does not meet the listing criteria set out in Article II [(paragraphs 2(a)]of the Convention text or the criteria laid down in Annex 2(a) of Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP17). The species is widely distributed and in India it is found abundantly in wild and on cultivation as well. The species has very fast growth rate and capacity to become naturalized outside of its native range, even it is invasive in some parts of the world. The regulation of trade in the species is not necessary to avoid it becoming eligible for inclusion in Appendix I in the near future and the harvest of specimens from the wild is not reducing the wild population to a level at which its survival might be threatened by continued harvesting or other influences. • Yamunanagar, Haryana
City Water & Waste Profiles Yamunanagar, Haryana ● Money invested: Rs 28.8 crore under Yamuna Action Plan (September 2005) ● Capacity created: 35 mld (sewage treatment plants) ● Untreated waste: 10-18 mld (27-39 per cent of the waste generated) Yamunanagar, located 220 km upstream of Delhi (including Jagadhri, an industrial town of Haryana), is the second largest urban agglomeration in Haryana after Faridabad. The population was 3.29 lakh in 2004. The city is not situated on the banks of Yamuna but on the Western Yamuna Canal (WYC). At the Hathnikund barrage (HKB), about 40 km upstream of the town, the river bifurcates between the Western and Eastern Yamuna Canals. The WYC, which passes through Yamunanagar, feeds two of Delhi’s water treatment plants at Haiderpur and Nangloi. The water of this canal is the heart of the water quality in Delhi. Yamunanagar is unique; it is not crisscrossed by the river Yamuna but by the WYC. Its entire domestic and industrial effluent -- treated, partially treated and untreated -- is discharged into the WYC and the impact is visible even 22 km downstream of the town. In other words, the WYC (and not the river) gets affected directly by the pollution from Yamunanagar. State of the river The CPCB monitors the Yamuna at Tajewala — some 40 km upstream of Yamunanagar and Kalanaur — where the river enters the city limits. After this point the river flows parallel to the city. Though the website of the project monitoring consultants (PMC) appointed by NRCD for YAP claims to carry out monitoring at five locations including one in the WYC immediately downstream of Yamunanagar, the data isn’t made public.
