With an event that is the envy of the aquatics industry and Swim Schools around the world, why wouldn’t you want to come to asctaCONVENTION 2017 on the Gold Coast in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games? Jay Johnston, General Manager ASCTA Development and the Convenor of asctaCONVENTION 2017 has continued his efforts on behalf of ASCTA and Swim Australia to deliver the best presenters, convention schedule, social events and activities for these events. Every year the team strive to go that bit further and this year is no exception. Free WiFi, live streaming, drones in the air, a revamped Convention App, free functions and lunches included all make a return. Added to this year’s mix will be tours of the Commonwealth Games facilities including a peek behind the scenes, and no doubt there will be a few surprises similar to last year when Borobi, the Commonwealth Games mascot turning up with 170 other people to our Awards dinner. Who knew that gum leaves were on the menu! We have worked extremely hard this year to secure high profile and well recognised key international presenters to the Gold Coast. Thanks must go to Swimming Australia for their financial assistance which is further evidence of their recognition of the significant contribution that Coaches, Teachers and Swim Schools make to the sport of swimming and the success of swimming clubs. Our high profile national Coaches and leaders in the Swim School sector will be in attendance throughout the event as they too value the lessons that the event provides. Many attendees say the event keeps them invigorated for a whole year with the ideas and strategies they gain. The opportunities abound to catch up with old friends and make new acquaintances. The venue is on the tramline which enable attendees to easily move up and down the Gold Coast strip. High quality and low cost meal venues are plentiful and the revamped Jupiter’s Casino and the magnificent refurbished and expanded 5 star Pacific Fair shopping centre are only a short walk away. Jay and Swim Australia Executive Officer, Gary Toner have worked conjointly to develop a program for Swim Australia registered Swim Schools which is relevant and progressive in delivering content that challenges and expands the strong base of our industry. Of particular note is an expanded and updated presentation on the previous survey results presented last convention into trends and patterns in Swim Schools with over 100 Swim Schools participating in a significant research project providing imperial data on which to base targeted and effective marketing, focus attention and improve cost efficiencies within Swim Schools. Swimming and water safety Teachers will have the opportunity to listen to world-leading Teachers presenting on a range of topics, engage in many practical sessions and specialist niche group teaching streams which are the envy of Teachers around the world. Funding for women in sport; rural and regional Australia, specific grants for further education, ABSTR Northern Territory and Western Australia attendees are offered or available every year. Our group of supporters, sponsors and trade exhibitors will again make a valuable addition to the event not only by their financial contribution which enable us to deliver fantastic value for money (some conventions charge more for a day than we do for a week!) as well as provide a valuable service. They are all as genuine in their passion and enthusiasm of the aquatics industry as we are. Many also support asctaCARES to raise funds to support Coaches, Teachers and Swim Schools in their time of need. Please support the raffles, auctions and fundraisers happening throughout the event in any way you can. Even a small amount of support can make a big difference. Please also promote networking by taking the time to introduce yourself or friends and acquaintances to others that you know. We hope you go home better educated, inspired and with an expanded network of friends and professional supporters from your attendance.     SWIMMING AUSTRALIA SELECTION POLICY 2021 AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR TEAM 1. Definitions and Interpretation a) This Selection Policy is to be read in conjunction with the Swimming Australia (SA) Selection Guidelines. b) All defined terms in this Selection Policy have the same meaning as in the Selection Guidelines, unless otherwise stated. c) In this Selection Policy, the following words have the corresponding meaning: (i) FINA Point Score means the scoring system administered by FINA and available at http://www.fina.org/content/fina-points (ii) Individual Olympic Event means an individual swimming event that will form part of the next Olympic Games; and (iii) Non-Olympic Event means an individual or relay swimming event that will form part of the Competition that, at the time of SA implementing this Selection Policy, is not part of the swimming program at the next Olympic Games. 2. Background a) For the purposes of this Selection Policy: (i) the Team is the Australian Swim Team; (ii) the Competition is the 2021 Pathways Duel Meet; (iii) the Competition will take place on 18-21 August in [Brisbane TBC]; and (iv) the Qualifying Events are the; (A) final of the 2021 Australian Age Championships, which will take place on 5-12 April 2021 in Gold Coast. (B) final of the 2021 Australian Swimming Championships, which will take place on 14 – 18 April 2021 in Gold Coast. b) This Selection Policy details the process and criteria by which SA will select athletes to the Team to compete at the Competition. 3. Laurie has many coaching achievements including 10 Gold, 11 Silver and 12 Bronze medals from swimmers he has directly assisted at Olympic level including Jon Sieben, Duncan Armstrong, Tracey Wickham and Steven Holland. Laurie has also been an integral part of the Australian Olympic team for his ability to unite, inspire, motivate and relax the entire team. Laurie has brought his influence and passion to the areas of baby swimming and drowning prevention, embedding him in the Australian swimming industry as a swimming and water safety guru. Keynote Presenter: Simon Watkins Simon has worked in the aquatic industry for over 20 years opening his first Swim School in 1999 and growing that business to 26 pools in the UK before migrating to Australia in 2008. Simon is currently the lease holder of four pools in Australia, owner of six pools in the UK and Head Coach/Aquatic Centre Manager of Trinity Aquatic Centre, Lismore. A Commonwealth Games level athlete himself, Simon started his coaching career in Wales when injury prevented him from competing at Manchester in 2002. He quickly made the transition to coaching and coached on international teams for Wales and Great Britain from 2004 to 2008.

After two years of uncertainty, the council-owned cattle selling facility was saved from permanent closure after elected members backed a motion to keep the gates open conditional on the yards maintaining a yearly throughput of 8500. At Tuesday night’s council meeting, elected members resumed discussion on a motion by cattle producer and Councillor Moira Neagle to continue the operations of the facility until 2025, de- velop a management plan for the faculty and consider recurrent funding for capi- tal upgrades. But Penola-based Rick Paltridge - who has been a vocal opponent of continuing the saleyards - told the chamber he had spoken to “numerous people around the region” including stock agents, truck drivers, meat buyers and farmers who he claimed believed the saleyards should be closed down.     SWIMMING AUSTRALIA NOMINATION CRITERIA TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES SWIMMING (To be held in 2021) 1 Definitions and Interpretation 1.1 Definitions Unless otherwise defined below, capitalised terms in this Nomination Criteria have the meaning given to them in the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) Olympic Team Nomination and Selection By-Law, certain of which have been reproduced below for the sake of convenience. Alternative Qualifying Events means the Designated Consideration Meets and Secondary Consideration Meets, to be considered by the SAL Selection Committee only if the Qualifying Event is cancelled. AOC means the Australian Olympic Committee Inc and any of its officers, employees or agents and any committee it convenes including the AOC Selection Committee. AOC Olympic Team Nomination and Selection By-Law means the document adopted by the Executive which governs, among other things, the nomination and selection of Athletes to a team for an Olympic Games or Olympic Winter Games. AOC Selection Committee means the committee established by the AOC to send athletes and appoint officials to the Australian Olympic team for the Games. AOC Selection Criteria means the criteria adopted by the AOC in respect of the Games which outlines the requirements for an athlete to be selected by the AOC to participate in the Games. Athlete means a person who: (a) participates in the Sport; and (b) is recognised by the National Federation or the AOC as eligible for nomination to the AOC for selection to the Team pursuant to this Nomination Criteria. Designated Consideration Meets means the events set out in clause 13. Executive means the Executive of the AOC.

    Environmental Effects and Considerations The aquatic environment in which newborn, babies, toddlers and preschoolers play and learn may promote or inhibit their ongoing water familiarisation and aquatic skill development. In part, this will depend on many environmental factors which accumulatively determine whether the child has a positive or negative experience. This Unit of Study will reflect on these factors and discuss the various aspects of many of them. It must also be remembered that many of these factors also impact upon the child in their home environment; in aquatic play with caregivers at any location as well as more formal water familiarisation or swimming and water safety lessons. Senses People primarily determine their like or dislike of their surroundings through sensory feedback. People primarily sense through the six exteroceptive (external) senses: 1. Sight 2. Sound 3. Smell 4. Taste 5. Touch/feel 6. Balance To a lesser extent people also receive feedback via interoceptive (internal) senses such as pain and the stretching of internal organs. These senses could play a role as a result of ingesting water and the stomach becoming distended. The third aspect of sensory feedback is proprioception which provides feedback solely on the status of the body internally. This is the sense that indicates whether the body is moving with required effort, as well as where the various parts of the body are located in relation to each other. The ears, eyes, muscles, ligaments and skin provide sensory information in order to guide your body enabling smooth movements, body balance, good posture, and automatically react to the immediate surrounds.
