  • Guide to Marinades
#95 - Guide to Marinades Hi there! You’re listening to the Lazy Genius Podcast. I’m Kendra, and I’m here to help you be a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t. You’re listening to episode 95 - The Lazy Genius Guide to Marinades. I’m pretty sure when I started this podcast almost three years ago, I didn’t anticipate some of the topics we’d dive into for an entire episode… like marinades. It’s pretty fantastic, and I’m here for it. But whenever I do any kind of InstaStory that involves a marinade of any kind, you guys ask all kinds of questions and understandably. Using them seems like this perfectly natural skill in cooking, but it also seems really random, especially if you haven’t been taught how to use them. So that’s what we’re going to do today! But before we jump into the ins and outs of marinades, I want to say thank you. Last week was a big week for me on Instagram. If you’re not on Instagram, you can check my SorryWUT highlight to see exactly what happened, but essentially within a few hours of each other, an interview I did with The Kitchn was on their main site and Jenna Fischer, aka Pam from The Office, talked about this very podcast on her Instagram stories. You guys. It was quite a day, and I’m still recovering a little. But the coolest thing wasn’t being on my favorite food website or being mentioned by one of my favorite celebrities.

ON THE BACKBURNER: AN ANALYSIS OF DOCUMENTARY STYLES THROUGH AN ANTHOLOGICAL CULINARY DOCUSERIES A CREATIVE PROJECT SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ART BY ASHLEY MULLEN MR. CHRIS FLOOK - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2020 2 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION With the arrival of streaming content platforms, such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, an increasingly significant number of new fictional and non-fictional programs are being offered to audiences. Within this novel abundance of content, audiences can find many new documentaries (as well as “docuseries”). The increase in documentaries as a percentage of all new content on streaming platforms is a response to the documentary’s popularity among the average viewer (HotDocs, 2018). For instance, some of the most popular documentaries series recently debuting on streaming services include Making A Murderer (Ricciardi, Demos, Nishimura, & Deo, 2015), Blackfish (Cowperthwaite & Oteyza, 2013), Fyre (Smith, Purzycki, & Gabai, 2019), Explained (Klein, Rozansky, Mumm, Nishimura. Posner, Spingarn-Koff, & Townsend, 2018), and Tiger King: Murder, Mayhen and Madness (Chaiklin, Goode, Smith, & Stevens, 2020). These are only a few in the ever-increasing list of popular documentaries and docuseries appearing on streaming services. Among these popular films and series are several culinary documentaries, including Chef’s Table (Gelb, Fried, McGinn, & Weaver, 2016), Salt Fat Acid Heat (Cotner, Gibney, Lawrence, Nishimura, Nosrat, Offman, Suh, & Biraghi, 2018), and Ugly Delicious (Cotner & Del Deo, 2018). The interest in culinary docuseries has been substantial, so much so that in July of 2019, Netflix debuted its very own “Netflix Food” category and corresponding Twitter account (@NetflixFood), which advertises the streaming platform’s food programs.

Salt. Fat. Acid. Heat. Media. An Analysis of Food Media Practices in Switzerland Nila Chea Media and Communication Studies Two-Year Master, 15 credits Spring 2020 Examiner: Michael Krona Supervisor: Pille Pruulmann Vengerfeldt Word count: 17’408 Grade: A Abstract According to Samin Nosrat’s (2017) best-selling cookbook, salt, fat, acid and heat are key to cooking good food. At the same time, the process of making food has never been more connected with media. Given how intertwined food and media are today, I also add media to the list of ingredients. Food has become a popular topic in traditional media, as well as on new digital platforms. Since there is already a large body of research on food media texts, this thesis concentrates on food media related practices in the everyday life and the convergence between traditional and digital food media. For this study, a mixed-method approach was chosen, which included a questionnaire and a subsequent in-depth interview for the participants. The qualitative analysis of the data builds on a theoretical framework which draws first and foremost on Couldry’s (2004) Practice Theory which is complemented by Foth & Hearn’s (2007) Communication Ecology Theory to organize the practices. The food media practices of the study participants illustrated how embedded media have become in everyday practices and explained the convergence between traditional and digital food media. At the same time, the results brought media power dynamics to light and demonstrated that even media, that seems innocent at first, has to be consumed with a critical eye. Keywords: food media, practice theory, communication ecology theory, everyday life, media power 2 Table of Contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................................................................
