    Overview Mortlake Rowing Club is the oldest component part if the present-day MAABC. It was established in 1877. Next came Anglian Boat Club, which started in 1878. It merged with Mortlake Rowing Club in 1962 to become Mortlake Anglian Boat Club. Chiswick Rowing Club was the result of the amalgamation of two local clubs, Bedford Park and Bedford Park & District and later merged with Mortlake Anglian Boat Club to become Mortlake Anglian & Chiswick Boat Club. Alpha Women's Rowing Club formed in 1927 and was to merge with Mortlake Anglian & Chiswick Boat Club in 1984, since when we have been: Mortlake Anglian & Alpha Boat Club. The Origins of Mortlake Institute Rowing Club Based on contributions from Mike Williamson, Les Rule (in his late 80s and who joined the club in 1936) and Gordon Hilliker in May, 2003. Unfortunately the official documents dealing with the club history have long since been mislaid, so we will have to rely on our recollections and hearsay. The club was founded in 1877 as Mortlake Institute Rowing Club boating from a shed along side “The Ship” public house. In the early 1900s plans were developed for building the stone river embankment between Watney Brewery and Kew. We presume that the councils of Richmond and Mortlake decided that as all the rowing clubs on the Surrey side of the river were based at Putney they should have one between the two towns. The site chosen was a strip of land between the river and the crematorium, steps were incorporated in the new embankment for easy access to the river and two 1914- 18 army huts were acquired, one for boats the other as a clubhouse and changing room just behind the steps.

INTRODUCTION It is a great privilege for me to be asked to write a foreword to the 140 years history of the Cappoquin Rowing Club, an up to date version of the booklet first published in 1962*. My only claim to this privilege is that I am descended from John Henry Keane who rowed for Cambridge in the 1836 boat race and defeated Oxford by4 lengths. He is the man who started it all. His efforts so prospered that when in 1990 Cappoquin were finalists at Henley regatta, Dan Murray’s exuberance echoed around the headlines with the words "Cappoquin, the smallest and best rowing club in the world". Let the record of this rowing club speak for itself.     The Diamond Jubilee Award 2012 To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, the Chairman invited all British Rowing members to nominate people who had gone that extra mile for our sport and who through their dedication have helped to lay down a legacy for future generations of rowers. The following have been awarded this medal in recognition of their dedication to rowing, with grateful thanks. Rodney Andrews has been a volunteer coach at Wadham College, Oxford for 31 years. Gavin Stewart was a protégé of Rod’s who rowed for GB at the Olympics in 1988 and 1992. He is described as a tireless volunteer who always ‘goes the extra mile’, creating a legacy that has seen more than a thousand athletes progress through his coaching. Keith Baldwin President of Twickenham Rowing Club. A true ‘leader’, tireless, methodical, diplomatic and an achiever - give Keith a problem and he will resolve it. He is still pressing on with the third phase of upgrades to the club and his work will leave a great legacy for all rowers there. Ted Bates of Molesey Boat Club – has recently retired as the long-serving Secretary of Molesey BC. During his time at the club he has been a key facilitator in ensuring good partnerships with the Local Authority, vital to its successful development. Bob Bayliss ‘Mr West Midlands’. As a long term Regional Chairman he has seen through many changes in the Region. He was instrumental in the provision of a regional rowing centre at Worcester, and has been a dedicated supporter of staff in development work in the region.

Secretary Chris Whyte On behalf of the President and Members of London Rowing Club, I write to offer Your Royal Highness our sincere congratulations on your 90 th birthday and to wish you many happy returns of the day. Your Royal Highness’s long standing patronage of London Rowing Club is greatl y appreciated by the membership and your visit to the Club in 2006, as part of our 150 th “Anniversary celebrations, is warmly remembered. I am pleased to report that the Club is performing strongly at both club and interna - tional level. Last November, for the first time in over 50 years, the Scullers’ Head of the River Race was won by a London member, Mr Stephen Feeney, whilst at the Head of the River Race in March the Club retained the Vernon Trophy. Mr Rob Williams is currently World Champion in the Lightweight Coxless Four and took a bronze medal for Great Britain in the same event at the first round of the World Cup, two weeks ago. Also at the World Cup, Miss Sophie Hosking won a gold medal as part of the Women’s Lightweight Double which is coached by London member Mr Paul Reedy. The Club has other members participating in the national squad and has also won several events at domestic regattas.

    PBDRC – Our History Poplar Blackwall & District Rowing Club Recollections from 1854 to 1980 PBDRC – Our History Foreward The clubs history is distorted with former President Dorothea Woodward-Fisher claiming that the club was formed in about 1854, others have claimed 1845 and in 1953 Dick McPherson informed a London reporter that the club was formed at around about 1900. The truth is that no one will ever know and little documentation was kept and what was is probably sitting in some attic somewhere in London’s East End. Early names of the club include Poplar Blackwall United Rowing Club, The Poplar Blackwall Athletic Club and finally in the mid thirties, the Poplar Blackwall & District Rowing Club. So unclear is Poplar’s founding that the club celebrated its 100th birthday in 1968 and seventeen years later it again celebrated it’s 150th in 1985. The Company of Waterman and Lightermen have backboards recording Poplar Blackwall and District regattas going back as far as 1835 however these were probably lighterage companies based within these districts competing against each other. In past years most companies were based in public houses as the labour was mostly casual. A lighterman would report daily with the hope of being given a days work. The roots of the club evolve from Watermen and Lightermen and until 1951, many of the club members were deemed to be professionals and so consequently were disqualified from racing in Amateur Rowing Association events, simply because they were watermen and possibly had competed for a wager or against someone who had. A key date in the clubs history was 1956, which saw the first crew from Poplar to be permitted to compete at Henley Royal Regatta, a feat which captured great interest with the national press – The first crew of formally professionals to compete in what was then and still is one of the greatest rowing events in the World.
