Mahogany Fire Update

Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, July 9, 8 a.m. • Acres: 2,758 • Location: Near Mahogany Grove Campground between Kyle and Lee Canyon • Start Date: June 28th • Cause: Human • Containment: 100% • Personnel: 185

Las Vegas, NV, July 8, 2020 Resources continue to be released from the Mahogany Fire as rehabilitation work is completed in areas where suppression activities created disturbance in the landscape. Water bars, a shallow channel dug into the earth or a raised barrier of rock, wood or other sturdy material, direct runoff away from the burn area and into vegetation to reduce erosion.

While no fire spread and little heat is expected on the Mahogany Fire, crews remain in place to monitor the burn area. Crews are also available for initial attack should a new fire start in the area outside of the fire perimeter.

Fuels around the fire area will continue to dry as hot temperatures and low humidity are forecast into Friday. The dry grass and brush is highly receptive to new fire starts and active fire behavior would be expected under the forecast weather and fuel conditions. Visitors and residents in the area are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities that could spark a wildfire.

Blowing ash and dust may still be visible from the recreation areas and community of Mount Charleston. The wind-driven ash and dust can easily be mistaken for smoke. Minimal amounts of smoke may be visible as well as large trees and vegetation could hold small amounts of heat. Fire officials are confident in the containment lines surrounding the perimeter of the fire.

Kyle Canyon Road (SR 157) and Lee Canyon Road (SR 156) are open. Deer Creek Road (SR 158) remains closed to ensure public and firefighter safety. Spring Mountain Visitor Gateway, off of Kyle Canyon Road (SR157), is closed. Fire and local authorities ask the public to follow posted signs and directions from incident personnel when traveling around areas that are closed to ensure firefighter and public safety.

The final update from the Type 3 incident management team assigned to Mahogany Fire will be released on July 10 at 8:00 a.m.
