Abstract Recent studies of neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) in nearby galaxies find that all isolated star-forming disk-dominated galaxies, from low-mass dwarfs to massive spirals systems, are H i saturated, in that they carry roughly (within a factor 1.5) as much H i fraction as permitted before this gas becomes gravitationally unstable. By taking this H i saturation for granted, the atomic gas fraction fatm of galactic disks can be predicted as a function of a stability parameter q j/M,whereM and j are the baryonic mass and specific / angular momentum of the disk (Obreschkow et al., 2016). The (logarithmic) di↵erence ∆fq between this predictor and the observed atomic fraction can thus be seen as a physically motivated way of defining a ‘H i deficiency’. While isolated disk galaxies have ∆f 0, q ⇡ objects subject to environmental removal/suppression of H i are expected to have ∆fq > 0. Within this framework, we revisit the H i deficiencies of satellite galaxies in the Virgo cluster (from the VIVA sample), as well as in clusters of the EAGLE simulation. -

Kenney Department of Astronomy, Yale University, New Haven, CT 06520 Draft version October 23, 2018 ABSTRACT We present an analysis of the stellar populations of the gas-stripped outer disks of ten Virgo Clus- ter spiral galaxies, utilizing SparsePak integral field spectroscopy on the WIYN 3.5m telescope and GALEX UV photometry. The galaxies in our sample show evidence for being gas-stripped spiral galaxies, with star formation within a truncation radius, and a passive population beyond the trun- cation radius. We find that all of the galaxies with spatially truncated star formation have outer disk stellar populations consistent with star formation ending within the last 500 Myr. The synthe- sis of optical spectroscopy and GALEX observations demonstrate that star formation was relatively constant until the quenching time, after which the galaxies passively evolved. Large starbursts at the time of quenching are excluded for all galaxies, but there is evidence of a modest starburst in at least one galaxy. For approximately half of our galaxies, the timescales derived from our observations are consistent with galaxies being stripped in or near the cluster core, where simple ram-pressure estimates can explain the observed stripping. However, the other half of our sample galaxies were clearly stripped outside the cluster core. Such galaxies provide evidence that the intra-cluster medium is not static and smooth. For three of the most recently stripped galaxies, there are estimates for the stripping timescales from detailed gas stripping simulations. -

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Function: New Progress in Understanding an Old Distance Indicator Tom Richtler Astronomy Group, Departamento de F´ısica, Universidad de Concepci´on, Casilla 160-C, Concepci´on, Chile Abstract. I review the Globular Cluster Luminosity Function (GCLF) with emphasis on recent observational data and theoretical progress. As is well known, the turn-over magnitude (TOM) is a good distance indicator for early-type galaxies within the limits set by data quality and sufficient number of objects. A comparison with distances derived from surface brightness fluctuations with the available TOMs in the V-band reveals, however, many discrepant cases. These cases often violate the condition that the TOM should only be used as a distance indicator in old globular cluster systems. The existence of intermediate age-populations in early-type galaxies likely is the cause of many of these discrepancies. The connection between the luminosity functions of young and old cluster systems is discussed on the basis of modelling the dynamical evolution of cluster systems. Finally, I briefly present the current ideas of why such a universal structure as the GCLF exists. 1 Introduction: What is the Globular Cluster Luminosity Function? Since the era of Shapley, who first explored the size of the Galaxy, the distances to globular clusters often set landmarks in establishing first the galactic, then the extragalactic distance scale. Among the methods which have been developed to determine the distances of early-type galaxies, the usage of globular clusters is one of the oldest, if not the oldest. Baum [5] first compared the brightness of the brightest globular clusters in M87 to those of M31. -

The SBF Survey of Galaxy Distances. I. Sample Selection, Photometric

Box 26732 Tucson, AZ 85726; Alan Dressler Carnegie Observatories, 813 Santa Barbara St., Pasadena, CA 91101 ABSTRACT We describe a program of surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) measurements for determining galaxy distances. This paper presents the photometric calibration of our sample and of SBF in general. Basing our zero point on observations of Cepheid variable stars we find that the absolute SBF magnitude in the Kron-Cousins I band correlates well with the mean (V −I)0 color of a galaxy according to M I =(−1.74 ± 0.07) + (4.5 ± 0.25) [(V −I)0 − 1.15] for 1.0 < (V −I) < 1.3. This agrees well with theoretical estimates from stellar popula- tion models. Comparisons between SBF distances and a variety of other estimators, including Cepheid variable stars, the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF), Tully-Fisher (TF), Dn−σ, SNII, and SNIa, demonstrate that the calibration of SBF is universally valid and that SBF error estimates are accurate. The zero point given by Cepheids, PNLF, TF (both calibrated using Cepheids), and SNII is in units of Mpc; the zero point given by TF (referenced to a distant frame), Dn−σ, and SNIa is in terms of a Hubble expan- sion velocity expressed in km/s. Tying together these two zero points yields a Hubble constant of H0 =81±6 km/s/Mpc. -

Gas infall and outflow are critical for determining the star formation rate and chemical evolution of galaxies but direct measurements of gas flows are difficult to make. Young massive stars and Hii regions in the halos of galaxies are potential tracers for accretion and/or outflows of gas. Aims. Gas phase abundances of three Hii regions in the lower halos of the edge-on galaxies NGC 3628 and NGC 4522 are determined by analyzing optical long-slit spectra. The observed regions have projected distances to the midplane of their host from 1.4 to 3 kpc. Methods. With the measured flux densities of the optical nebular emission lines, we derived the oxygen abundance 12 + log(O/H) for the three extraplanar Hii regions. The analysis was based on one theoretical and two empirical strong-line calibration methods. Results. The resulting oxygen abundances of the extraplanar Hii regions are comparable to the disk Hii regions in one case and are a little lower in the other case. -

We present the study of stellar dynamics both from a theoretical and numerical point of view. In particular we investigate this topic on different astrophysical scales, from the study of the orbital evolution and the mutual interaction of GCs in the Galactic central region to the evolution of GCs in the larger scale galactic potential. Globular Clusters (GCs), very old and massive star clusters, are ideal objects to explore many aspects of stellar dynamics and to investigate the dynamical and evolutionary mechanisms of their host galaxy. Almost every surveyed galaxy of sufficiently large mass has an associated group of GCs, i.e. a Globular Cluster System (GCS). The first part of this Thesis is devoted to the study of the evolution of GCSs in elliptical galaxies. Basing on the hypothesis that the GCS and stellar halo in a galaxy were born at the same time and, so, with the same density distribution, a logical consequence is that the presently observed difference may be due to evolution of the GCS. Actually, in this scenario, GCSs evolve due to various mechanisms, among which dynamical friction and tidal interaction with the galactic field are the most important. -

Received YYY; in original form ZZZ ABSTRACT We present 3 mm and 2 mm band simultaneously spectroscopic observations of HCN 1- 0, HCO¸ 1-0, HNC 1-0, and CS 3-2 with the IRAM 30 meter telescope, toward a sample 5 of 70 sources as nearby galaxies with infrared luminosities ranging from several 10 ! to 12 ¸ more than 10 ! . After combining HCN 1-0, HCO 1-0 and HNC 1-0 data from literature with our detections, relations between luminosities of dense gas tracers (HCN 1-0, HCO¸ 1-0 and HNC 1-0) and infrared luminosities are derived, with tight linear correlations for all tracers. Luminosities of CS 3-2 with only our observations also show tight linear correlation with infrared luminosities. -

ABSTRACT We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being rela- −1 tively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (∼<100kms ). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can ac- commodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were taken under conditions that are not ideally suited for deriving stellar veloc- ity dispersions for galaxies with a wide range of Hubble types. We describe an effective strategy to circumvent this complication and demonstrate that we can still obtain reliable velocity dispersions for this sample of well-studied nearby galaxies.
