Recreational pole dancing has grown from a little-known leisure activity being taught in homes and bars to an activity being taught in dedicated studios all around the world. Existing research documents some of the motivations and controversies of pole, but questions remain as to what polers might consider important to them, and how and why they came to use the pole as an adult. The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of recreational polers in Atlantic Canada. Six polers were asked about their experiences of pole in the class environment (either at a studio or at home) and of pole in their social lives. The participants were asked general questions to explore their unique pole experience without specifically focusing on assumptions of stigma or sexuality in the participants’ experiences unless they introduced the topic. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted from the semi-structured interviews. The main finding of this study was that polers use pole as a tool for growth and self-development. They are able to do this by working through the challenges that pole presents with the help of the supportive pole community. The results explore the overarching theme of adult development through the following subthemes: gender, adult play, competitions, exploration, stigma, and the learning process. There are similarities in this study with the findings of previous pole studies. However, this thesis also presents new ideas surrounding pole. The first is that pole is being used to aid polers in their own development. The second is that polers are able to use pole as a tool for play. Finally, this study demonstrates the possibility of a growing inclusivity of gender in pole. EXPERIENCES OF RECREATIONAL POLE DANCERS 4 Dedication To my supervisor Dr. Colleen MacQuarrie, the one who made this process go smoothly. Thank you so much, you were the best help I could have asked for and such a joy to work with! EXPERIENCES OF RECREATIONAL POLE DANCERS 5 Acknowledgements First, I would like to thank the community of polers that agreed to participate in my research. This thesis would quite literally be nothing without them, and they have been fully supportive in every way they could be. It was so wonderful to get to chat with each one of you, and I sincerely hope that you will be happy with this work. I also want to thank my family, who have been there for me and supported me for the entire process. Your encouragement during this time has meant so much to me, and I am forever grateful to you. Finally, I wish to thank my supervisor, Dr Colleen MacQuarrie, who provided me with invaluable guidance during this process. You have been, and continue to be, one of my strongest supporters. I appreciate you and everything you have done for me personally and academically. Thank you so much!
