Capital Visit for the Cameras The Online Welsh Rugby Championship has been devised and created by All Wales Sport Ltd. The first home game was played at Sophia Gardens, but the club soon relocated to its famous ground at Cardiff Arms Park which was named after the local Cardiff Arms public house and on the grounds of the old Cardiff Hotel. Cardiff's iconic home was soon to be shared by Wales, who staged internationals on the ground from 12th April, 1884 until 15th March,1997. Wales beat Ireland by two tries and a dropped goal to nil in their first international at Cardiff Arms Park, but lost their last one 34-13 against England. In 1999 the National Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park, as it was officially known, was replaced by the Millennium (Principality). Cardiff RFC continue to play at the Arms Park. When I was a youngster, playing for Wales at Cardiff Arms Park was the dream of every schoolboy who picked up a rugby ball. Cardiff RFC has welcomed several touring teams in its history and it's remarkable that they've not lost to Australia in six attempts. They've celebrated victory against all the major touring countries. Other achievements include thirteen times Western Mail Welsh club champions, eight times Welsh Cup winners, 1994-95 Welsh League champions, 1999-2000 Welsh/Scottish League champions, 2008-09 Welsh Premiership champions, 1939 Middlesex 7's winners, 1964 Gala 7's winners, 2006 Selkirk 7's winners, plus nine times Snelling 7's winners. The club has produced countless internationals and British & Lions players, immortals such as Gwyn Nicholls, Wilfred Wooller, Dr Jack Matthews, Bleddyn Williams, Cliff Morgan, Gerald Davies, Barry John, Gareth Edwards, John Scott, Robert Howley, and David Young having worn the blue and black jersey. The more recent Cardiff RFC players who've gone on to play for Wales include Harry Robinson, Jamie Roberts, Bradley Davies, Alex Cuthbert, Leigh Halfpenny, and Ellis Jenkins. Next up for Cardiff is an online game against South Wales Police, and while neither team has enjoyed much success in the numbers game it should be thoroughly entertaining. On the field it was a different story for Cardiff RFC in 2019-20, and they were without doubt the best club team in Wales when the season was abruptly ended by the coronavirus outbreak. Online opponents South Wales Police RFC was established in June 1969 when rugby teams of four different police forces amalgamated. These police teams represented Cardiff City, Glamorgan, Merthyr Borough, and Swansea Borough. South Wales Police RFC won their first match played in 1969-70 against Pontypridd, and gained membership of the Welsh Rugby Union in June 1971. The club won the Snelling 7's in 1993, and has provided a number of players to the Welsh National team. Bleddyn Bowen captained Wales, while the others who represented their country were Richie Collins, Steve Sutton, Rowland Phillips, Martyn Morris, Richie Donovan, Alex Finlayson, Ian Gallagher, Ian Hall, Mike Knill, Hugh Williams Jones, Stuart Parfitt, and John Wakeford. Eighteen teams have already qualified for the last 64 in the cup play-offs, and going into the penultimate round of games another eighteen are in a position to join them. In Pool 4 a win for Treharris at Felinfoel will get them there, and the same applies to Lampeter Ladies who host Rumney in Pool 6. If Hartridge beat Newport at home they will become the third team to qualify from Pool 14, while in Pool 12 Rhydyfelin Ladies need a bonus point win from the away clash against Chargers Female Hub to get over the line. Three teams are in a position to qualify from Pool 15, and leaders Port Talbot Panthers need just a point from the home clash against Aberavon Quins to complete the job. Welsh Fire Service and Cilfynydd Ladies require bonus points wins from their respective away games against Bynea and Pencoed. Two points will do for Yr Hendy at home to Carmarthen Quins, and Tredegar Ironsides will be celebrating should they win at Abercwmboi. Into Pool 3, and Rhymney need a bonus point win at home to Penarth to be assured of a place in the play-offs. Castell Howell, who have already qualified, could make changes for the trip to Nelson. The click and collect service at Castell Howell will be open before, during, and after the match. As for Fall Bay and Mumbles, claiming a play-off place is in their own hands. Both are away to Ogmore Vale and Maesteg Quins respectively. After winning the away game 22-8, Porth Harlequins will qualify should they complete the 'double' over Pontyates in Pool 13. Cwmllynfell need a bonus point win at home to Wales Police (Men). The other two teams who don't need help to qualify are Betws, who host neighbours Amman United, and Caerleon who journey to Aberdare in Pool 10. As usual you can follow the action 'live' from 5pm on Saturday. .
