NOVEMBER 2019 A LIVING MEMORIAL child’s shoe. The door to a gas chamber. A Jewish prayer shawl. These are just a few of the nearly 1,000 artifacts on display at Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away., an exhibition on view at The Museum of Jewish Heritage — A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in downtown Manhattan through January 3, 2020. NYC-ARTS A takes viewers inside this timely exhibition in Auschwitz Remembered: An NYC-ARTS Special. Paula Zahn hosts the one-hour special, which features interviews with Bruce Ratner, Chairman of the Board of The Museum of Jewish Heritage; Ronald S. Lauder, Founder and Chairman of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation Committee and President of the World Jewish Congress; and Holocaust survivors. The program is airing as part of Exploring Hate: The Roots and Rise of Anti-Semitism and Extremism, a new multiplatform initiative from WNET.

The largest exhibition featuring Auschwitz and its role in the Holocaust ever presented in North America, Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. brings together more than 700 original objects and 400 photographs from institutions and museums around the world to share the stories of Auschwitz — and life before, during, and after the Holocaust.

The exhibition features personal items that belonged to survivors and victims of Auschwitz, such as suitcases, eyeglasses, and shoes, as well as rare artifacts that relay the experience of survivors and liberators — from artist Alfred Kantor’s sketchbook depicting daily life in Auschwitz to the trumpet that musician Louis Bannet (known as “the Dutch Louis Armstrong”) credits for saving his life while he was in Auschwitz.

Other artifacts include concrete posts from the fence of the Auschwitz camp; part of an original prisoners barrack; a gas mask used by the SS; and an original German freight train car used for the deportation of Jews to the ghettos and extermination camps in occupied Poland.

According to Robert Jan van Pelt, Chief Curator of the exhibit, stories are the heart of the exhibition. “All through the exhibition there are stories about individuals and families, communities and organizations, ideologies that teach people to hate, and responses that reveal compassion and love. There are stories of victims, PREMIERES SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24 AT 7:30PM perpetrators, and bystanders, stories with heroes and villains — stories that

SESAME STREET’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

While Elmo and friends search for the sign, Joe takes a look back at 50 years of Sesame Street memories, and everyone soon realizes that Sesame Street isn’t just a sign or a street — it’s a place where everybody is welcome, learning is fun, and all kinds of monsters, birds, and humans come together to form lifelong friendships. Editor: Rachel Hollander Design: Miriam Fishman EVENTS SPOTLIGHT 11 DECEMBER 2019 STAR POWER rom rock music legends to Broadway showstoppers, there’s no shortage of star power on Great Performances this month.

Start the month off with Kinky Boots (Sunday, December 1 at 9pm), the Tony Award-winning high-heeled hit musical about friendship and extraordinary shoes. With songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein, follow the story of two people with seemingly nothing in common, but with a little compassion and a lot of understanding, Fembrace their differences to create an innovative (and wildly creative) business strategy. Have musical theater fever? Then catch Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 (Wednesday, December 4 at 8pm), celebrating the legendary production with a stellar cast including Alfie Boe, Nick Jonas, Lea Salonga, Colm Wilkinson, Norm Lewis and Ramin Karimloo.

Next, superstar John Legend and pop star Sara Bareilles (Broadway’s Waitress) light up the stage as Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (Sunday, December 15 at 7:30pm), the 2018 Emmy Award-winning live broadcast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical. Recounting the biblical story of the final weeks of Jesus’ life, it focuses on the relationship between Jesus and his betrayer, Judas.

Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon, who wowed audiences as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, plays Judas. The starry cast also includes rock legend Alice Cooper as King Herod, Norm Lewis (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess) as Caiaphas, and Ben Daniels (The Crown) as Pontius Pilate. Filmed at the Marcy Armory in Brooklyn, this live broadcast captures the spirit of the original Tony-winning 1971 production and takes it to electrifying new heights.

TOP: MATT CROCKET; BT: PAUL LEE/NBC Music lovers may also enjoy an encore of Hitman: David Foster and Friends (Sunday, Learn more at pbs.org/gperf December 15 at 10pm), which unites the chart-topping songwriter, producer and Join the conversation on social media with hashtag maestro to the stars with Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Katharine McPhee, Kenny G, #GreatPerformancesPBS Celine Dion and many more in this all-star concert.
