#14 June 2006 BIMONTHLY NEWSLETTER ON THE EURO-MEDITERRANEAN COOPERATION This bimonthly “info page” is complementary to our magazine “Meet ‘in EuroMed” (downloadable from our website www.salto- youth.net/euromed). The aim of this newsletter is to spread out some more general information regarding the Euro Mediterranean cooperation. We will deal with political and cultural aspects by proposing some useful publications, some links or website and, last but not least, by suggesting some interesting events you may wish to follow! Initiatives and Events “Three faiths – one voice” for a “T-Kit” on Inter-Religious Dialogue The Expert Group on Inter-Religious Dialogue is an initiative of several networks of youth organisations who were convinced of the need to struggle for a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society where diversity is not seen as a burden but as a benefit for society. In the current context of escalating intolerance, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and religious attrition in Europe and beyond, the Expert Group is convinced that education on religions and Inter-Religious Dialogue as a tool for peace. The Group, which is presently working on a comprehensive T-Kit on Inter-Religious Dialogue is composed of nine European youth organisations: the European Peer Training Organisation (EPTO); the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS); the Ecumenical Youth Council in Europe (EYCE); the Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations (FEMYSO); the International Federation of Catholic Parochial Youth Movements (FIMCAP); the International Young Catholic Students – International Movement of Catholic Students (JECI-MIEC); Pax Christi; the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF). The publication would gather information, knowledge, good practices and recommendations on how to get engaged in Inter-Religious activities. Its official publication is planned for October 2006. Travelling exhibition: Dress codes and modes – Women’s dress in some Muslim countries and communities This exhibition looks at women’s dress in Muslim countries and communities and is a snapshot of the diversities and commonalities through space and time. These highlight the influence of many forces – class, status, region, work, religious interpretation, ethnicity, urban/rural, politics, fashion, climate… The exhibition is very colourful and uses 250 images (paintings, drawings, photos), past and present, and over 85 quotations from a rich variety of sources plus some explanatory original text. It is composed of 20 large printed panels (each on its own exhibition stand complete with lighting), plus a DVD, plus some items of dress with dress stands. Panels focus on specific themes deal with “women’s clothing in Muslim contexts” (as Turkey, Iran, Egypt, or other countries). It is designed to be displayed at events and conferences. The ‘hire’ of the exhibition is free (travel costs are to be paid). Moreover, the exhibition is designed to pack and travel easily and can be sent anywhere in the world. The text is in English, but a booklet of translations will be considered if there is demand. To book “Dress, Codes and Modes ” exhibition for your event, or for further information, please contact [email protected] The EuroMed preparation meeting for the ministerial Conference “Towards a Plan of Action on Strengthening the role of Women in society”, which will take place in Rabat, Morocco from 14 to 16 June 2006, aims to facilitate dialogue between national Authorities and European and Mediterranean NGOs gender reforms in the Euro-Mediterranean area. The themes which will be discussed in the three panels are Women’s rights and their political participation, Women’s status and economic integration and Women’s role in the intercultural dialogue. The reports by EUROMESCO , FEMISE and the Anna Lindh Foundation will serve as as basis for these discussions. The preparatory conference will bring together actors of civil society as well as representatives of the governments and of Parliaments from the Member State and the Partner countries. Conclusions and recommendations will be presented during the final session and submitted to the Ministerial Conference which is planned in November 2006. The city of Antwerp has been chosen for its interesting inter-religious background and its Jewish and Muslim districts. The participants will get to know and experience different aspects of the cultures, mean analysing their relation to them and creating tools to be applied in intercultural work. This training course is organised in co-operation between SALTO-YOUTH EuroMed Resource Centre and JINT, the National Agency for the YOUTH programme in Belgium (Flemish Community). The training course will take place from October 7th (arrival between 16:00-20:00), until October 15th 2006 (departure from 9:00 on) in Antwerp (Belgium). An opportunity to meet European and Mediterranean partners in EVS, to get a common understanding of the meaning of voluntary work, to develop common sending and hosting projects, while discovering the richness of cultural and educational differences. Read the course description and apply online at: http://www.salto-youth.net/cmseuromedgreece/ Publications Online Magazine : Contemporary Art from the Islamic World The aim of this online magazine is to show the diversity of artistic expressions and individual positions of artists who live in Islam -influenced countries or regions, or consider their cultural home to be in such places but live elsewhere. This online magazine is published four times a year since March 2003, and offers articles, information and pictures concerning contemporary visual arts with essential sources or references in the Islamic world, a term meant here in its “cultural sense”. http://universes -in-universe.org/eng/islamic_world/ Publications: “Inclusion” Booklets This SALTO Inclusion Resource Centre, based in Flemish Belgium, developed some new practical publications for youth workers wishing to set up (international) projects with socially excluded target group young people with fewer opportunities. These educational publications contain many practical tips & tricks to make inclusion projects better and easier. These issues are available: "Going International" is the educational booklet for inclusion youth workers who are tempted to take young people with fewer opportunities (socio-economically disadvantage) abroad for the first time. "Use Your Hands To Move Ahead" is an inspirational booklet on how to adapt (short term) EVS to the life-world of young people with fewer opportunities . “Fit for Life” is a practical manual which helps youth workers explore how sports can be used as an educational method for the work with young people with fewer opportunities . “No Barriers, No Borders” is an extensive guide book for setting up international projects with young people with and without a disability, in a fun and inclusive atmosphere. “Over the Rainbow” is an educational publication about setting up international projects with young lesbians, gay guys and bisexual youth.
