Comedy Series BARRY, Starring Emmy® Winner Bill Hader, Returns for Second Season March 31 on HBO
Comedy series BARRY, starring Emmy® winner Bill Hader, returns for second season march 31 on HBO Desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion, Barry is attempting to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting. But getting out is messy. While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren't the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? The dark comedy series BARRY, starring Emmy® winner Bill Hader, returns for its eight-episode second season SUNDAY, MARCH 31 (10:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO. Alec Berg (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”) and Hader (“Saturday Night Live”) are co-creators, executive producers, directors and writers. Other cast regulars include: Stephen Root (“Get Out”) as Monroe Fuches, Barry’s former handler, contemplating a future without his primary source of income; Sarah Goldberg (“Hindsight”) as Sally, a dedicated acting student who is Barry’s love interest; Anthony Carrigan (“Gotham”) as Noho Hank, now in the hot seat as the new head of the Chechen mob in LA; and Emmy® winner Henry Winkler (“Arrested Development”) as Gene Cousineau, a pompous yet endearing acting teacher who takes Barry under his wing. As season two opens, Barry struggles to focus exclusively on the theater and his girlfriend and classmate Sally, hoping against hope to rid himself of the ties that bind him to the Chechen mob group now led by Noho Hank, who ascended to the top job after Barry whacked his boss last season. -

Responses to Sarcasm in Three Star Trek Movies
LEXICON Volume 6, Number 1, April 2019, 11-20 Responses to Sarcasm in Three Star Trek Movies Shafira Sherin*, AdiSutrisno English Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia *Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Sarcasm has been widely studied in various disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, neurology, sociology, and even cross-cultural studies. Its aggravating nature, however, often elicits various responses by the hearer. This study attempts to investigate responses to sarcasm by the characters of three Star Trek “reboot” version movies. It aims to examine responses to sarcasm and to analyze the patterns of responses to sarcastic remarks in relation to the characters’ interpersonal relationship. The data used in this research were taken from the dialogues of the movies, which were categorized into eight classes of responses: laughter, literal, zero response, smile, nonverbal, sarcasm, topic change, and metalinguistic comment. The results show that the most frequent responses conveyed by the characters were literal responses (29.41%), whereas the least frequent responses are laughter (1.96%). There is no pattern in responding to sarcastic remarks in relation to the interpersonal relationship between the interlocutors. However, strangers tend to respond in literal, zero response, and topic change. Meanwhile, close acquaintance tend to give various responses. Keywords: interpersonal relationship; pragmatics; response; sarcasm. INTRODUCTION understood by the parties involved. It can be said that if the sarcastic remarks are expressed in Sarcasm, often mistakenly understood as appropriate circumstances, sarcastic criticisms, no verbal irony, is a figure of speech bearing a semantic matter how negative it may cause, may leave interpretation exactly opposite to its literal positive impacts such as laughter and make the meaning. -
Portrayals of Stuttering in Film, Television, and Comic Books
The Visualization of the Twisted Tongue: Portrayals of Stuttering in Film, Television, and Comic Books JEFFREY K. JOHNSON HERE IS A WELL-ESTABLISHED TRADITION WITHIN THE ENTERTAINMENT and publishing industries of depicting mentally and physically challenged characters. While many of the early renderings were sideshowesque amusements or one-dimensional melodramas, numerous contemporary works have utilized characters with disabilities in well- rounded and nonstereotypical ways. Although it would appear that many in society have begun to demand more realistic portrayals of characters with physical and mental challenges, one impediment that is still often typified by coarse caricatures is that of stuttering. The speech impediment labeled stuttering is often used as a crude formulaic storytelling device that adheres to basic misconceptions about the condition. Stuttering is frequently used as visual shorthand to communicate humor, nervousness, weakness, or unheroic/villainous characters. Because almost all the monographs written about the por- trayals of disabilities in film and television fail to mention stuttering, the purpose of this article is to examine the basic categorical formulas used in depicting stuttering in the mainstream popular culture areas of film, television, and comic books.' Though the subject may seem minor or unimportant, it does in fact provide an outlet to observe the relationship between a physical condition and the popular conception of the mental and personality traits that accompany it. One widely accepted definition of stuttering is, "the interruption of the flow of speech by hesitations, prolongation of sounds and blockages sufficient to cause anxiety and impair verbal communication" (Carlisle 4). Especially in 2019, it is viewed as a highly polarized sector of society sometimes hostile to those on the right side of the aisle. But just because the majority of those who work in Hollywood are liberal, that doesn’t necessarily mean our entertainment follows suit. I argue in my thesis that entertainment in Hollywood is far less partisan than people think it is and moreover, that our entertainment represents plenty of conservative themes and ideas. In doing so, I look at a combination of markets and artistic demands that restrain the politics of those in the entertainment industry and even create space for more conservative productions. Although normally art and markets are thought to be in tension with one another, in this case, they conspire to make our entertainment less one-sided politically. -
