I had older siblings and was first introduced to the music they were listening to. The first record that I remember listening to was The Beatles “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and on the flip side “I Saw Her Standing There”. As the years went by, I listened to whatever they brought home. The Monkees, Neil Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and, of course, more Beatles. As I got older my friends were my influence. This brought about The Rolling Sones, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and Elton John just to name a few. There were so many excellent artists and it was always exciting to discover another band or artist that offered more great music. This is what eventually led me to Rolling Stone, the magazine. One of the best discoveries early on was Bob Marley. It was around 1976 when he landed on the cover of Rolling Stone. He had just released a new album, Exodus, and after reading the interview and the review of the album I took a chance and bought the album. My friends were sticking to rock, or as we call it now, classic rock, so I really didn’t know anyone who knew anything about Marley or reggae but I figured if Rolling Stone thought it was worth 4 ½ stars then I should check it out. There really wasn’t any other way to hear new music unless they played it on the radio, which they didn’t, or you knew someone who had already discovered him, and I didn’t. A versatile, experienced, and accomplished singer and pianist, Jen plays with sensitivity, joy, and a That discovery really did open a new world for me. White As one pulled up to his South African home, behind the gate read the signs; “Beware of Mr. Baker - Private”. It was past this gate that documentary filmmaker Jay Bulger came to meet, survive and briefly live with a rogue relic of 1960s British Rock music, the world famous drummer and wasted madman of sorts. Ginger Baker. Peter Edward Baker was born in England as war broke out and counted the sound of bombs exploding as his first exposure to loud noise that would always fascinate him. He started off in jazz and took over from Charlie Watts to play in Alexis Corner’s blues band with bassist Jack Bruce. With Jack, they would later team up with guitarist Eric Clapton to form the supergroup Cream. Just like any band that Ginger was in, Cream didn’t last long, just over a couple of years but they produced 4 albums and were of considerable influence to popular Rock music of the day. Ginger and Jack complimented each other musically with the virtuoso Clapton somewhere in-between, but their ruckus personal relationship sometimes became violent. A break-up of the band seemed inevitable. Another stint with Clapton and with Steve Winwood in the group Blind Faith, produced fine musical results but that was even more short-lived. Ginger spent much of his next years in different bands, in different locales throughout the world. Africa would become his base on different occasions, where he lived harmoniously with its drumming rhythms.

  • The Most Admired* What Do Clint Eastwood, Jimmy
The Most Admired* What do Clint Eastwood, Jimmy Carter, and Warren Buffett have in common? No, this isn’t a setup for a pop culture joke, but rather a partial list of the most admired Americans over age 75. Provided with the names of 23 major personalities in this age bracket and asked to select the two they most admire, Americans compile a list that is at once diverse and homogenous; topping the list are two actors, two former presidents, a man of the cloth, and a financial wizard turned philanthropist. All remarkably accomplished, but all male. Clint Eastwood ranks highest overall, with 23% rating him as their most admired public figure over age 75; among men that proportion rises to 30%, and he reaches 33% among Republicans despite his unusual 2012 GOP convention appearance, making him that group’s second highest choice. Morgan Freeman runs a close second with 21% overall, but he is the clear favorite among both African Americans (40%) and Millennials (33%). Jimmy Carter finishes third overall with 19%, but he tops Democrats’ list (33%). Similarly, George H.W. Bush is number one among Republicans (36%), and he finishes fourth overall with 17%. Rounding out the most admired list in double digits are Billy Graham (16%) and Warren Buffett (13%). Buffett’s popularity lands him in second place among college-educated adults and affluent Americans. Billy Graham is relatively well loved among those over age 50. The three most admired women cross the ideological spectrum—former First Lady Nancy Reagan (9%) on the right, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (7%) on the left, and TV newswoman Barbara Walters (9%) in the middle.

The Beatles revolution- ized the recording process using technology to achieve completely unprecedented sounds and arrangements. Until then, popular music recordings were simply faithful reproductions of a live performance. Over the past fifty years, recording and production techniques have advanced so far that another challenge has arisen: it is now very difficult for performing artists to give a live performance that has the same impact, complexity and nuance as a produced studio recording.

After completing their “5- Week Summer Program” in the Summer of 2005, I knew that there was something about this institution that uniquely suited my needs, my passion, and my dreams. I was always interested in traditional and contemporary music, as well as the ever-evolving technology that was used in its creation. Berklee truly felt like the only place where I could fully immerse myself in the study of music and music technology, while being surrounded by thousands of other scholars who were passionate about music or the music industry.

  • The Leadership Skills of a Music Producer
The Leadership Skills of a Music Producer OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How do successful music producers practice positive leadership skills? OVERVIEW Have you ever wondered what goes into creating a successful album? Or, how an artist writes a song on acoustic guitar that somehow becomes a fully orchestrated pop hit? Almost always, a successful recording is the result of a team Photo: Apple Music effort. There are dozens of ways a songwriter can funnel a song from her brain to the airwaves. She might work with other composers, lyricists, and arrangers to craft and finely tune the song. Then, when recording, she may employ any number of extra musicians to add instruments or vocals. Engineers are required to record all those instruments, and later to “mix” them into a final product. Artists, photographers and designers must create a “look” for the recording package that complements the artist and music. And, perhaps most importantly, someone will need to manage the entire process, guiding all team members toward a unified aesthetic and timely completion. That someone, most often, is the “producer.” A successful music producer will see the potential of the artists with whom they work, have a vision for how to best reach the public with the artists’ music, and, more importantly, a plan regarding the steps required to do it. The producer may take on many roles, such as choosing a recording studio, gathering ideas, helping to compose and arrange the music, selecting musicians to play on a track, coaching the artist, and leading the recording session. The producer can function as a boss, a coach, a teacher, a colleague, or any combination of the above.

  • When Quincy Jones
BY CHRIS HEATH PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MAXWELL 4 days ago Frank Sinatra. Michael Jackson. Ray Charles. Malcolm X. Elon Musk. Truman Capote. Buzz Aldrin. Prince. Tupac. Even Leni Riefenstahl. Quincy Jones has run with them all. Chris Heath stays up late with the 84-year-old music legend who has a tale to go with every famous name. ......................................... "I feel like I'm just starting," Quincy Jones explains as he slowly takes a seat in the grand living room of his hilltop Bel-Air mansion, a wide arc of nighttime Los Angeles visible through the windows in front of him. "It seems like at 84 all the things you used to wonder about come clear to you." TRENDING THIS VERY SECOND entertainment Quincy Jones Has a Story About That So he begins. He begins talking about his life. It's a life punctuated by so many disparate encounters and achievements and circumstances that it is hard to believe they are the experiences of a single man. There is a lot of talking to do. 1. The Oscar was awarded in 1994 for his humanitarian work. He won the Emmy for the soundtrack to Roots and the Tony for the revival of the musical The Color Purple. He has won 28 Grammy Awards. There is the career, of course: the jazz musician, the arranger, the record executive, the soundtrack composer, the solo artist, the producer of the biggest pop album in history, the entrepreneur, the media magnate, the film and TV producer, the philanthropist…and on and on. Jones is one of just a handful of people who have accomplished the EGOT—winner of at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
