N002-12-01-04-Uefa.Com Team of 2003 Media Release Date: 12/01/04 Communiqué aux médias No. 002 Medien-Mitteilung uefa.com Team of 2003 announced Milan, Madrid and Porto to the fore in fans’ selection UEFA today announced the www.uefa.com users’ Team of 2003. Almost one and a half million votes were cast in the four weeks of voting before the polls closed on Friday 9 January 2004. The resulting selection is a mix of superstar names and relatively unfamiliar faces. UEFA Champions League winners Mi lan AC and UEFA Cup winners FC Porto are both rewarded for their success in 2003, although Real Madrid CF, despite relinquishing their UEFA Champions League title, supply four of the final 12. Echoing his recent selection as European Footballer of the Year, Pavel Nedved received the highest percentage of votes in any category, with almost 65% of the votes in the left-midfield position. The FC Porto coach José Mourinho also polled over 60% to win the coach category. His Porto charge Paulo Ferreira caused the biggest surprise in the final selection with his selection at right-back, but largely the team is packed with the acknowledged stars of European football. The uefa.com users’ Team of 2003 is: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus FC) – Paulo Ferreira (FC Porto) Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan), Paulo Maldini (AC Milan), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid CF) – Luís Figo (Real Madrid CF), David Beckham (Real Madrid CF), Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid CF), Pavel Nedved (Juventus FC) – Thierry Henry (Arsenal FC), Ruud van Nistelrooij (Manchester United FC) Coach: José Mourinho (FC Porto) Nesta, Roberto Carlos, Zidane and Henry are selected for the second successive year. Indeed, the French duo have now achieved the notable hat-trick of being selected for every uefa.com users’ Team of the Year since its inception in 2001. Full results and voting figures can be found at www.uefa.com. Never intended to be or likely to be viewed as a rival to more established awards, the Team of the Year does not bear the official UEFA imprimatur but provides a chance for the hundreds of thousands of fans who regularly use uefa.com to have their say in selecting the best players over the previous calendar year. 1/1 Unsurprisingly, Jamie Redknapp wins the player of the month award for December as he scores 5 goals in 6 games and I get the manager of the month award…’appy days. 16 year old Spanish stiker David Villa signs for a bargain fee of 900k (minimum release). The transfer window opening also brings lots of media questions regarding the futures of Zidane, Vieira, Rivaldo and Montero. None of whom I want to sell A loan offer for Michael Owen is turned down. A tough opener to the month as we welcome Arsenal. Rivaldo hasn’t recovered fully so Barnes keeps his place and Babb has to replace Montero as he’s lacking in match fitness as well. Arsenal pretty much matched us for the game, so we were slightly lucky to come away from that with a full three points, but it just goes to show the value of quality. Zidane showing why I won’t be letting him go. 30 games: GOALS: (12) Fowler. (9) Rivaldo. (8) Owen. (7) Zidane. (6) Redknapp. Fowler 4th in league ASSISTS: (11) Zidane. (9) Rivaldo. As usual, they have put forward nominees to receive the annual awards presented at the UEFA Gala, held as a curtain-raiser to the new club competition season at the end of August to coincide with the draws for the opening stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup. They have named six candidates for each of the awards presented to the Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, Best Attacker, Most Valuable Player and Best Coach, based on their performances during the 2001/02 European campaign. This is not restricted to the UEFA Champions League – which explains the inclusion of Bert van Marwijk, head coach of the Feyenoord side which carried off the UEFA Cup and will be in Monaco to contest the UEFA Super Cup with Real Madrid CF.

  • The Paradox of the Portuguese Game: the Omnipresence of Football and the Absence of Spectators at Matches to Joao Nuno Coelho and Nina Clara Tiesler
FSAS_A_243975 .fm Page 578 Thursday, July 12, 2007 9 :38 PM • Soccer and Society Routledge Vol. 8, No . 4, Month 2007, pp. 578-600 R Taylor 6 Franco Group The Paradox of the Portuguese Game: The Omnipresence of Football and the Absence of Spectators at Matches to Joao Nuno Coelho and Nina Clara Tiesler Without doubt, football is omnipresent in the Portuguese public (and private) sphere. Some speak about the footballizaton of Portuguese society', and criticize the hegemony of football in Portuguese culture, along with it the close (and sometimes dangerous) connec- tions between football and politics . What is so interesting about this phenomenon is that it is juxtaposed with other facts, such as stadium attendance being surprisingly low. The essay brings to the forefront the particularities of the Portuguese football social formation case by taking these two current realities as a point of departure . In analysing stadium attendance over three decades against specific historical backgrounds, the authors present six different factors which explain the paradox and come to the conclusion that both realities are not contradictory – but partly determining each other. Someone was saying yesterday that Norway is the top-ranking country in human development; ( .. .) that it's a fantastic country and so on and so on ( .. .) But here's back at them . Portugal is at the top of its group and all it needs is a draw to qualify 30 for the World Cup while Norway is five points behind the leader of its group! ( .. .) Ha ha ha! [ l ] Introduction Although Portuguese football is reasonably well-known to international football fans, at least since Benfica and the national team of Eusebio & Co ., the general idea abroad that Portugal is a `football country' is much more recent (Euro 2004).

  • Uefa.Com Users' Team of the Year 2007 Revealed
Media Release Date: 18/01/2008 Communiqué aux médias No. 006 Medien-Mitteilung uefa.com users’ Team of the Year 2007 revealed AC Milan players rewarded in poll The uefa.com users’ Team of 2007 has been announced, with UEFA Champions League winners AC Milan having the most players in this year’s selection. Over 3.75 million votes were cast by 277,985 individual uefa.com users in the poll. The dream dozen contains just two survivors from last year’s team along with five newcomers. Milan’s trio includes central defender Alessandro Nesta, who was also selected in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and left midfield player Clarence Seedorf, who also appeared in the 2002 team. Colleague Kaká with 220,333 votes received the highest number of votes overall and is selected for a second successive year, this time as attacking midfielder. Also surviving from last year’s team is Steven Gerrard, who is selected for a third time, and is the only player from beaten UEFA Champions League finalists Liverpool FC to feature. English clubs are to the fore, though, with John Terry – selected in 2005 – and newcomer Didier Drogba from Chelsea FC joined by Cristiano Ronaldo, whose previous selection came in 2004. His Manchester United FC coach Sir Alex Ferguson is perhaps belatedly selected for the first time, recognition of his achievement in guiding his team a ninth Premier League title under his stewardship. Another somewhat belated newcomer is Real Madrid CF goalkeeper Iker Casillas, while Sevilla FC right-back Daniel Alves, FC Barcelona left-back Eric Abidal and FC Internazionale Milano striker Zlatan Ibrahimović are also selected for the first time.
