Page 1 of 1 Dear MBCE Family,

s I reflect on the past year here at the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus, my thoughts turn to you. I hope you have remained in good health and High spirits. Here in Esopus, this year has been quite a different experience from years past.

Along with organizations across the country the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus – Mid Hudson Valley Camp (MBCE-MHVC) responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with the health and safety of our staff and those we serve as our highest priority. In March we had to cancel our remaining retreat schedule and were forced to cancel our Mid-Hudson Valley Camps for the summer. While we missed our campers, volunteers and counselors, our camp directors provided some astounding virtual content for their campers and I thank them sincerely for bringing a piece of the MHVC to them.

If there was a “silver lining” in all this, it was our ability to take advantage of this down time to undertake some capital improvements to the property. The main walk-in coolers and freezers in the kitchen were replaced, as were windows in the Dining Room. In the Cottage, windows were also replaced along with two French doors.

As New York’s COVID-19 protocols phased in, we were able to begin welcoming small groups back to the Center. Several successful summer work weeks were hosted to complete the new deck behind the Recreation Center. The volunteers who were able to spend their whole summer here, or part of it, did a great job of taking care of our “home.” May God bless all of you who volunteered your time, talent, or resources. It was wonderful to see the faces of young people hard at work again!

We also connected with our regional community in a special way by hosting a socially distant dance recital for Hyde Park, NY’s Dance Works Too, and began hosting Day Visits for families, campers, and volunteers to come and safely spend a day on the property. Looking ahead, we plan to continue these Day Visits and create additional opportunities for groups to come “home” safely.

On behalf of everyone we serve, my sincere gratitude to all of the generous donors listed in this Honor Roll, and to everyone who volunteered their time and talent, for helping to sustain the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus – Mid Hudson Valley Camp as a place of hope, love, and joy. May the Peace of Mary our Good Mother be with all of us.

Gratefully, James M. Raimo Executive Director

Century Ride - $43,592 A group of riders gathered with their support team in Central Park this year during the early morning hours on September 7th for Century Ride 2019. Together they made the grueling 100-mile bike trip through the city, across the Hudson River and up the steep hills of Bear Mountain towards their final destination: The Marist Brothers Center at Esopus. The intention of this initiative is to raise money for the children of the Mid-Hudson Valley Camp and in 2019, $43,592 was raised! Many thanks to our dedicated riders and sponsors! Our group of Century Riders pose for a celebratory picture after their 100-mile ride. Turkey Trot - $4,657 The Turkey Trot is an opportunity for camp counselors to come together and reconnect outside of the usual camp setting. It is a 21+ event that involves a pub crawl in Queens, NY to raise funds for the next camp season. It is also an opportunity for veteran camp alumni to share stories and see old friends. This year the Turkey Trot raised $4,657! Thank you to all who participated!

Esopus Music - $6,750 Esopus Music is an exciting fundraiser that allows Mid-Hudson Valley Camp volunteers to showcase their talents while raising money for a place they love. Each year a group of dedicated performers are joined by new musicians to make the event even more spectacular. It is a chance to hear some great music, catch up with old friends and make new ones. There are also many unique raffle prizes to win, including wine, tickets to different sporting events, hotel stays and many more. Last year $6,750 was raised for Esopus! Thank you to everyone who supported this event!

Dance Works Too! 2020 Recital - $800 Dance Works Too! (DWT) is a dance studio located in Hyde Park, NY that has been operating for the last 21 years under the guidance of Kelly Markou. Due to COVID-19, the studio had to switch to online classes, but they wanted to give their students the opportunity to have a proper dance recital. We welcomed Dance Works Too! with open arms and worked together to create a socially distant recital on July 10th. We set up a temperature check in, a list of cleaning procedures, a mask mandate for all spectators, and a limit on guests per dancer. Overall it was a great success, and more importantly, the students had a wonderful time and got to celebrate all of their hard work. The families of DWT were very generous and donated $800 to the MBCE. Mid-Hudson Valley Camp In the summer months, the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus opens its gates as the Mid-Hudson Valley Camp, home to nine week-long camps serving children and adults with developmental, mental and physical disabilities, deaf children, children living with cancer, and inner-city students. Each camp is staffed entirely by volunteers who are offered a week of fulfillment and opportunities to learn about humility and patience. This wonderful ministry speaks to the dream of the founder of the Marist Brothers, St. Marcellin Champagnat, to reach out to young people, especially those most in need and neglected by society. A unifying atmosphere of respect, joy, and boundless love has come to define the Mid-Hudson Valley Camp.

Kids 1 Camp Directors decided to hold Virtual Camp and connect with one another during a Zoom Dance.

Outdoor Adventure The Challenge by Choice philosophy is at the heart of the Outdoor Adventure Program. Individuals are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and participants are guided through a series of initiative activities, low ropes and/or high ropes elements. Each element is presented as a challenge and then debriefed in a group discussion. “The Adventure involves teamwork, nature, communication, and fun, all with the purpose of exploring and deepening the faith of the participants through experiences and discussions,” says Nina Lokar, who has helped many groups explore and enjoy the challenges that the Adventure presents. The program also incorporates initiative and processing activities tailored to the visiting group’s goals. All programs are conducted by a staff of facilitators who have been trained in safe operating procedures according to industry standards. Staff has modified programs for sacrament preparation, especially Confirmation. Day programs, overnight, and two-night programs are available, and retreats are completely customizable. The outdoor adventure facilities have been incorporated into yearlong programming at the center. Outdoor Adventure programs are implemented through Ed Kennedy, Director of Outdoor Adventure Activities. 8 | 2020 MBCE ANNUAL REPORT MBCE-MHVC Offerings (cont.)

Retreats The MBCE-MHVC facilities are available year-round for private, small group and large group retreats. Retreats are customizable and can be run by the MBCE staff or by visiting organizations. Established retreat programs are held at the Center and are backed by the Province as an opportunity to offer experiences of community, service, and spiritual formation while surrounded by the aesthetic beauty of the grounds. Retreat reservations are made through Tim Hagan, Director of Operations; preference is given to Marist-affiliated groups.

The Volunteer Program The volunteer program at the MBCE provides opportunities for extended volunteering, where participants live and work at the MBCE for a period ranging from a month to a year. The volunteers’ service focuses on hospitality, community living, youth ministry, and manual labor. Though this year’s in-person summer programs were cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kids 1 Camp took place virtually, much to the delight of the campers and their families. This message, from the Kruger family on July 6, 2020, says it all. Dear Amy, Emily, Shane, Kerry, and all of the Kids 1 Camp Counselors, Thank you for making the virtual Kids 1 Camp experience last week a very special and memorable one! Although Nicholas and Christopher really missed being at camp in Esopus so much, they truly enjoyed all of the fun videos, your performances in the videos, Zoom calls, Flip-grids, activities (drawing club), etc. that you planned for them and for all of the campers. A special thanks to Nick for his time, effort, and creativity for putting together all of the amazing videos that we can keep and watch again and again. You all went above and beyond in everything you did last week. Thank you for helping the campers (and families) stay connected during a very challenging time in all of our lives. Your ongoing dedication to Kids 1 is truly appreciated by all of us. We love everything you did for us. Sending our love to all of you! Please stay safe and healthy. Praying that we will see each other in person at camp in June/July 2021. We love you and everyone at Kids 1 Camp! Love,

The gifts of time, talent and treasure which are celebrated in this 2020 Annual Report all serve the on-going Mission of the Marist Brothers and the MBCE – “to make Jesus known and loved”. The Center continually strives to fulfill this goal through its many programs, the people who participate in them and those who are inspired to serve. Here is one of their stories.

Praying it Forward “We plant the seeds that one day grow, knowing they hold future promise and that the Lord’s grace will do the rest.” - Bishop Ken Untener. A seed, first planted at Esopus fourteen years ago, is now bearing fruit at St. Joseph Regional High School. In 2006, Joseph LoGiudice, then a senior at Archbishop Molloy, attended an Encounter Retreat at Esopus. The result, he says, was transformational. “I was not very involved during my time in high school,” said LoGiudice, “but that retreat was life-changing and inspired me to get involved in my Church, be more active about my faith, live it out with service, and really strive to grow continually, which isn’t always easy. As a part of the larger Church, the good work of the Marist Brothers and the lay teachers Pictured left to right: Edwin Redondo- Columbiani, Zyrus Hernandez, Luis at Molloy redirected me back to work on my own relationship with Jesus. Saenz, Matt Fallon, Mr. Joseph LoGiudice, But that relationship improved as I grew in devotion to Mary, Our Good Kellen Moros, Kai Alberto, and lower Mother, and understanding St. Marcellin’s view of Mary as Our Ordinary Jeremy Acosta and Adrian Cedeno from Resource to mediate on our behalf to her son.” St. Joseph Regional High School. LoGiudice, a 2010 graduate of St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, followed up on his Esopus experience by becoming part of the student team that created a retreat program for the College. He was also invited back to serve as a leader for Molloy’s upperclassman retreats. Six years later, he became the full-time Director of Campus Ministry at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey. “I had already known a few St. Joe’s guys from volunteering at Esopus, so I was excited to work at another Marist affiliated school,” LoGiudice said. “The great challenge has been merging my experience with the needs of young people today. I have to remind myself I was also far from comfortable with Jesus or my faith when I was that age, and just needed one good opportunity to change how I saw God.” One of LoGiudice’s students, Jeremy Acosta, a current senior at St. Joseph Regional, acknowledges the impact that LoGiudice and his own Esopus retreat experiences has had. “Mr. LoGiudice invited me to the Marist Youth Gathering along with a few other St. Joe’s students. The experience was awesome, and made me want to go again, and this led me to go on a retreat at Esopus. During the retreat I connected with God for the first time in awhile; the feeling was amazing and from that moment on my faith has become the centerpiece of my life. Since then, I’ve participated in the LaValla weekend, the St. Joe’s leadership retreat, Encounter Christ Retreat. Those experiences have been life changing. The LaValla weekend was eye- opening as we participated in a simulation about what life is like as a refugee at the border of Mexico. The

Encounter Christ Retreat was the highlight of my time as a student at St. Joe’s, a truly amazing experience that has inspired me to serve the various Esopus programs.” Jeremy has gone on to serve as a leader for several St. Joe’s retreats and worked at the Sacred Heart Camp last summer. “My experience at camp was awesome,” he said. “One thing that stood out to me during that week was how happy the campers were. Everyone who played a part during that week, the camp directors, counselors, and the kitchen crew, had one goal: to make this week about the kids, and make sure camp was the best time they had all summer.” And, with the assistance of his friends and the support of Mr. LoGiudice, Acosta has also established a Marist Youth Club at St. Joe’s. A pair of St. Joseph Regional High Not surprisingly, LoGiudice has found fulfillment in “paying his own School students pose while helping to experiences forward.” clean leaves on property. “Working in Catholic education, my energy was always pulled into the ministry work of retreats and community service,” he said. “Soon after becoming a teacher, the continued work of leading retreats and the joy it brought me inspired me to pursue a ministry position full time. I pray I can give back to my students what was given to me.” Acosta, one of the many St. Joseph Regional students to benefit from LoGiudice’s inspiration, says: “If I were trying to convince someone who has never been to Esopus to go on a retreat, I would tell them that the experience is life changing. Once you visit Esopus, every chance you get, you will always want to go back. I have grown closer to God and my faith has become that centerpiece of my life because of my experiences here.” In this way, “new seeds of future promise”, through the grace of God, are sown.

12 | 2020 MBCE ANNUAL REPORT Leavimg a Legacy

Br. Bob Andrews, a teacher and coach at Archbishop Molloy High School for over 40 years, died this year from the Coronavirus. He always had a great love for the Esopus property and many programs that take place here. He generously remembered both the MBCE and Esopus Runners in his will.

Leaving a Legacy to MBCE-MHVC While it may not be possible for you to make a large gift to the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus – Mid Hudson Valley Camp at this point in your life, you can still have a profound impact on the lives of the young people we serve by including us in your estate or financial planning.

Perhaps the simplest way to create a lasting legacy at MBCE – MHVC without using current resources is by including a charitable bequest in your will or living trust. A gift through your will or trust can have a significant impact on the mission of MBCE – MHVC for generations to come. Bequests can be unrestricted or designated for a particular program or purpose. Making us a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy is also a great way for you to create a legacy at Esopus.

If you’d like to discuss ways to create your own lasting legacy at MBCE – MHVC, contact Jim Raimo, Executive Director, at 845-384-6620 or [email protected]. If you have already included MBCE – MHVC in your will or estate plan, please let us know. Doing so will make it possible for us to ensure that your intentions for your gift can be honored and thank you for your generosity.

If you decide to include us in your will, or your financial or estate planning, please use our legal name, which is “MBCE – Mid Hudson Valley Camp, Inc.”

2020 MBCE ANNUAL REPORT | 13 Tributes: AnnaMarie Leone

AnnaMarie Leone “Thank God... my heart is happy!” That is what AnnaMarie would say when we’d catch her deep in thought, a smile on her face and a tear in her eye. “Ohhhh, snow what?” (yanno what?) - she’d go on to explain just why her heart was so happy. Many times, that source of happiness was her Camp, ESOPUS. When Annie spoke about her heart being happy, we think what she meant was she felt joy. Joy, even in times of sadness, can exist because joy is not surface level but rather a deep understanding that despite life’s challenges there will always be a source of hope and a reason to rejoice. And this is what camp always was for Annie and continues to be for many campers and counselors alike - a reason to rejoice. A place where our hearts can be happy, we can find it easy to thank God for giving us a piece of heaven on Earth, and even when times are sad and when we have to say our goodbyes, we know that the memories made at camp were genuinely filled with love and goodness. In AnnaMarie’s memory, our family would like to thank everyone who brought joy to our Annie, who made her feel special because she was a child of God and not because of an extra chromosome, and who has and continues to support ESOPUS in being a source of joy and a reason to exclaim, “Thank God... my heart is happy!” The Leone Family

A tribute to AnnaMarie Leone, from her Camp family… When I first met AnnaMarie I thought her name was Ariel. She was a ray of sunshine that radiated positivity. Even when AnnaMarie finally told me her name wasn’t the same as the Disney princess, I couldn’t stop noticing similarities between the two. To start with the obvious, AnnaMarie was a terrific swimmer and just like the Disney princess Ariel, our AnnaMarie was a good friend to everyone. She cared deeply about and for the people around her. Like the princess, AnnaMarie was passionate about singing and dancing. She transformed when she touched the stage and dance floor, but she didn’t need either of those things to perform. AnnaMarie, like Ariel, was determined. She was determined to try new activities, she was determined to talk to that special boy, she was determined to make everyone’s day better. I feel so fortunate to have been a part of AnnaMarie’s world. AnnaMarie was brave and AnnaMarie poses with Nicky beautiful. She was loved and she will be missed terribly. -Jess Costabile

AnnaMarie had this way of making you laugh. However, it was not just any old laugh. She would give you those deep belly laughs- the kind of laughter that when you experience it, it makes you remember exactly what it feels like to be alive. AnnaMarie loved fiercely- she was never afraid of telling people just exactly how much she loved them (believe me, ask Henry). AnnaMarie was courageous- there was not a talent show at camp that she didn’t belt out “Kiss the Girl” or a camp dance that she didn’t own the floor and dance her heart out. AnnaMarie had an infectious sense of energy- no matter what the next activity was, she was always eager to participate. Being around her made you remember the beauty in all the little moments in life. She never wasted time caring about what anyone thought. If you looked at her at any given moment of the day, you could not help but let your soul feel full. She just genuinely enjoyed every minute of everything she did.

There are few people in this world that have the courage to not only embrace but share with others every single gift that god has given them. AnnaMarie always did both seamlessly. I will miss her forever, but I will carry all she has taught me always. Because I’ve known AnnaMarie, I’ve known the face of God. -Kathleen

I first met AnnaMarie up in Esopus, at camp, one of her favorite places in the world, many years ago. Although I don’t remember our first interaction, AnnaMarie enjoys time in the pool with I remember the many that were to follow. I had the privilege of having Kathleen Tomes. AnnaMarie in my group and what I remember most was her fierce independence, as well as her love for music. I remember thinking of AnnaMarie as the perfect camper for a new counselor to get to know, as she was incredibly kind, so very funny, and of course, entertaining. AnnaMarie had a sass about her that you couldn’t help but adore. She knew what she wanted and she went for it. Her rendition of “Kiss the Girl” at the talent show never got old and I loved watching her put her confidence on display. She was incredibly caring and had a heart almost as big as her personality. AnnaMarie was a wonderful singing partner, friend, sister, and mermaid. I think we could all learn a little something from her, whether that is to go for what we want, or simply to sing through life, and not to sweat the small stuff. She is so terribly missed and I cannot imagine that camp will ever be the same without her. -Jamie

AnnaMarie, our sweet superstar. We miss you. We miss your dancing, your singing, your love for The Little Mermaid. You lit up the stage every year at the talent show. You sang Kiss the Girl with all your heart. I am so honored to have been Part of Your World for the past few years in Esopus. Camp will never be the same without you. We know you will always be watching over us. We are so lucky to have you as our angel! -Janessa

AnnaMarie was sweet, sassy and a dancing queen. She will forever be remembered for her show stopping talent show performances and the joy she brought not only to our group, but to everyone she encountered. She appreciated the beauty of life and was the type of person who could see the good in everything. She always loved our walks to the river and sitting in peaceful silence taking in the beauty of nature. She was so playful, gave amazing hugs and loved to tease us counselors. She always knew how to make us laugh. She has touched our lives in such a profound way and we will never forget her beautiful soul. -Nicky and Lauren

2020 MBCE ANNUAL REPORT | 15 Tributes: Sae Suh

Remembering Sae Suh The Marist Brothers Center at Esopus-Mid-Hudson Valley Camp pays tribute and honors the life of a central member of our community we recently lost. Sae Suh was the beloved husband of Jessica Susan Kaman Suh, cherished son of Jong Kee and Jung Won Kim Suh, loving brother of Riji Suh, and devoted friend to many. Sae’s journey at the MBCE-MHVC started when he attended various retreats as a student through Archbishop Molloy High School. He quickly became a retreat leader and then was introduced to the Center’s camps Sae with his wife Jessica Susan Kaman Suh. by volunteering as Kitchen Crew. Sae would go on to volunteer four full summers at the MBCE’s Mid-Hudson Valley Camps, donating his time as a counselor for our Special Kids Camps, Cancer Camp, Camp Hope, serving as Water Safety Instructor, and as a member of the Maintenance staff. Every single person Sae encountered at the Center was made a better person because of his radiating personality. As Riji, Sae’s sister, has said, “Esopus became his happy place.” Just over a year ago, Sae was diagnosed with Stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer and it has been noted by those who knew him best how hard he fought. He made a point to stay positive, and continued to state “I’m not giving up... I’m still in this fight...”throughout everything. Sae passed on Saturday, September 5 in his family home, surrounded by his immediate family, and those he called his “sisters” and “brothers” – many from Archbishop Molloy High School, Mary Louis Academy and the MBCE- MHVC – in addition to his beloved dog, Odessa. Arrangements will be made Sae spending time with his dog, Odessa. to memorialize Sae on the MBCE-MHVC property. The world has suffered a great loss with Sae’s passing. His natural light, positivity, and care for others will never be forgotten. He contributed greatly to the Center and those we serve. We are forever in his debt. A GoFundMe page has been created to help Sae’s family pay down many of the medical bills that have accumulated. To assist in these efforts, you can visitwww.gofundme.com/f/community-support-for-sae-suh . The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be made in his name to the Mid-Valley Hudson Camp which can be done at maristbrotherscenter.org.

16 | 2020 MBCE ANNUAL REPORT Thank you Dittus!

If you are a regular at Esopus, you usually have a nickname, or something associated with your time here that sets you apart from everyone else - a unique MBCE persona. While this is a universal experience, there seems to be one person whose persona precedes them - Robert “Dittus” Dittus.

Now, if you go to call him Robert, he will become very flustered. It is always simply “Dittus.” Dittus decided to spend his time volunteering at the MBCE for the past year, but this is far from his first time here. Dittus began coming “home” in 2011 when he was a freshmen camper at Archbishop Molloy’s camp. When asked about his first impressions he said, “I hated the experience until about Wednesday because I can be very shy, but by the end of the week I never wanted to leave.” One aspect of this change in mindset was due to another longtime volunteer (and now Board member), Rosie Mulligan. Dittus said, “Talking with Rosie about absolutely nothing and feeling so accepted and listened to...I hadn’t felt that. I found my best friends at the MBCE and it made me happy to be alive.” Abbey Hipkin (volunteer) shares From his time as a camper, Dittus had decided that he wanted to shift from a laugh with Dittus as they play being served to providing service. As much as it was nice to be a camper, he basketball in the gym. realized that “the reward of being at the MBCE was the work.” He has worked at Molloy’s Freshmen Camp and Adult Vacation Camp in a variety of roles from kitchen crew to maintenance crew to counselor. One of his favorite moments during camp was when the dance was winding down during Adult Vacation and a camper of his, Lucy, was in her wheelchair and they began to dance together in the empty gym. When reflecting on the MHVC and the MBCE as a whole he said, “It’s just a beautiful piece of creation that’s amplified by the beautiful things that happen here.”

His time spent at the MHVC naturally evolved into a desire to become part of the year-long volunteer program. “I wanted to get to know Esopus better. How it works, what it needs, and how I can be a part of that.” His biggest takeaway is the community aspect of the MBCE and “how deep it goes...like never ending magic.” In a typical Dittus is all smiles when he is response, he said his proudest moment this year was “making the executive decision helping at the MBCE. to put curry on green beans...they were a hit!”

Now that Dittus’ time with us is up, he has made the decision to enter the postulancy to become a Marist Brother and we couldn’t be more proud. He said this came about one night as he attended dinner with the Brothers who live on property. “All of a sudden I said to myself, ‘I can do this...this feels right.’” He also shared that it wasn’t any particular moment that sparked this decision, but a combination of all of them. He is most excited to learn just what it means to be a Marist Brother and to “bring the spirit of Esopus to new places.”

In a final reflection on his time at the MBCE this year, Dittus had this to say: “I just feel real lucky to be here. I am very grateful to the people who have opened up to me. I will never forget that.” Summer Bourlier and Dittus We wish Dittus the best of luck as he enters the postulancy and we will always be pose in front of the Tower at here to welcome him “home!” his goodbye celebration.

2020 MBCE ANNUAL REPORT | 17 Letter from Summer

Dear Friends,

2020 has certainly been unpredictable and a test of our faith. Yet, despite it all, the strength of the MBCE family remained steadfast and ever present. You have all been tremendously supportive, both financially and spiritually, and I cannot thank you enough.

One unique characteristic I’ve noticed about the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus is that everyone who passes through here embodies what it means to feel “at home.” Nearly every donation was coupled with either a note of well wishes, a prayer, or a desire to honor a lost family member or friend. The limited number of visitors we welcomed brought with them a tangible joy that had been absent for months. Along with this, everyone has been following our health and safety guidelines without question and has made a point to give back to the MBCE. It’s this kind of support and shared love that makes anyone who passes through these doors feel like they are part of something larger than themselves - a family.

Jeremiah 29:11 has always been one of my favorite bible passages, but it has been a lifeline for me this year: “’For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Our MBCE family has confirmed this statement for me and kept my faith afloat. We must trust that, despite all of the challenges we have faced this year, there is a bigger plan in place and that there are brighter days to come.

On behalf of all who are served here, I express gratitude for each gift and prayer sent our way during the past year. This support has been crucial to our reopening plans and improving various areas on property. To our summer volunteers and work week participants, I thank you for bringing your MBCE spirit back to help us safely reopen our doors.

To all listed in the Honor Roll of Donors that follows, your generosity during these times is truly astounding. On behalf of those we serve, I thank you for your wonderful support and look forward to seeing you very soon. Stay safe and keep the faith!

With gratitude,

Summer Bourlier Advancement & Development Coordinator
