2015 Hall of Fame Program.indd 2 5/11/2015 4:09:39 PM President’s Message by Laurie Leighty 2015 Welcome to the Round Table’s 48th Celebration of Athletic Accomplishment! This year we’ve done something very different by dividing the celebration into two events – the Hall of Fame, where

four past outstanding athletes, a President’s coach, and a community leader will be inducted into our Hall of Fame, and An Evening with the Athletes, where we will honor our student athletes, scholarship winners, teams and coaches. Mike Klan, Laurie Leighty and Rich Hanna 2014-2015 was an action-packed year! When I read Barry’s Athletic Highlights, I was overwhelmed with all the amazing accomplishments that our athletes achieved this year! Congratulations to our CIF Champions – Cate’s Girls’ Volleyball and Bishop’s Girls’ Basketball teams! And all the other teams who made it to the playoffs and beyond!

As I finish my term as President, I want to thank all of our sponsors and members for their support – we are so lucky to have you sharing our vision! And to my fellow board members – a HUGE thank you for all the hours, lunches, committee meetings and events you have logged for the Round Table. As Randy Weiss observed, “What is so

impressive about the SBART board is that there aren’t any egos on your board – you’re Message all just working hard for the kids!” I couldn’t have said it better! And finally to all the Message Athletic Directors, Coaches, Athletes, the Press, Parents of Athletes and loyal fans of the Round Table….keep up the GREAT work!

Participation in sports is really a great character-building opportunity when done right. I think everyone connected to the Round Table believes this. So when we became acquainted with the Positive Coaching Alliance this year, it felt like the perfect opportunity for the Round Table to expand our impact and support of athletics to the youth sport programs in our community. Again thanks to our amazing community supporters, we were able to secure funding for three years to bring the Positive Coaching Alliance to Santa Barbara. This funding will provide seven seminars each year and will be offered to the leadership of youth sports programs (board members, athletic directors and executive directors), to the coaches, to the parents and to the athletes themselves...all for FREE! Already we have had seven seminars with over 300 total participants – and the biggest attendance was at the parent seminar! The response has been super positive, and we are already putting together a schedule for the next round which will begin in August! This wouldn’t have happened without the hard work and extra effort of our PCA Committee – THANK YOU!

Did you know that the Round Table has NO paid staff? That’s right – it is a very roll-up- your- sleeves-and-do-the-work sort of nonprofit. As President for the past two years, the biggest take away for me is how proud I am to be a part of this great community, as well as this great organization – the Round Table. There is no better place to see the real meaning of team than at one of our Monday press lunches. Together Everyone Achieves More… rings loud and clear. As I pass the baton to Cara Gamberdella, our incoming President, I’m certain her years will be just as exciting and rewarding! Look for even more great things from your Santa Barbara Round Table in the years to come!

2015 Hall of Fame Program.indd 3 5/11/2015 4:09:39 PM 2015

Over four decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area.

The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members.

The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College onJune 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million for local athletics.

Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September

Founders Founders 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds.

Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend.

It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka.

Erica Menzel-Downing Outstanding Athlete

Erica Menzel-Downing was such a great high school athlete, the future NCAA volleyball player earned 11 varsity letters while a San Marcos Royal. Competing in basketball and Track & Field as well as volleyball, Menzel-Downing was a First Team All-Channel

League selection in all three. She was elite in volleyball and track & field, garnering All- Fame CIF honors in both sports in the same year. Fame

Her incredible athletic ability, coupled with a fierce competitive drive, helped land her a scholarship at UCSB under the tutelage of Kathy Gregory. Menzel-Downing was a four-year starter for the Gauchos, becoming one of only two Gauchos to be ranked in the top 10 in career kills, kill average and digs. The Gauchos made the NCAA Tournament every year Menzel-Downing was on the team and won the Big West Conference title twice.

Menzel-Downing’s high school career included a CIF Championship in both volleyball and high jump. That year she was named the Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Year in both volleyball and track & field. Her leadership qualities were on par with her athletic ability as Menzel-Downing was named a team captain in all three sports she played.

It’s become a full circle as Menzel-Downing has returned to San Marcos as the girls varsity volleyball coach. The Royals have already won two Channel League championships under her guidance, and Menzel-Downing was recognized as Coach of the Year in 2012. She also devotes time to coaching with the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club.

“Playing for Kathy Gregory at UCSB made for a lot of tough moments, however, those tough moments and those challenging work outs and practices helped mold me into the person and the coach I am today,” she says.

Athletics is a big part of Menzel-Downing’s life. She married former San Marcos/Stanford star golfer George Downing with whom she has two children, Austin and Blake. Menzel- Downing’s younger brother, Jeff, plays professional volleyball in Europe after a similar standout career at San Marcos and UCSB.

Shannon Frowiss Phipps Outstanding Athlete

Despite all her success in college basketball, Shannon Frowiss Phipps remembers defeating mighty Buena during her senior season with the Santa Barbara High Dons as her favorite sports moment.

Fame

The talented forward averaged a double-double her final year with the Dons in 1987- 88, collecting a bevy of awards in the process including Channel League MVP, Street & Smith All-American and All-CIF. Her career totals of 1,372 points and 854 rebounds rank among the best in Dons history.

From Santa Barbara to Malibu, Frowiss Phipps had no less success at the NCAA level while at Pepperdine.

With the Waves, she earned All-West Coast Conference honors three times. She led Pepperdine in scoring and rebounding for three years straight from 1990 to 1992. Her shooting percentage of 60.8 percent her junior year remains a single-season school record. In fact, Frowiss Phipps is all over the Pepperdine record books. She is No. 3 in career conference scoring average at 16.3 ppg. All three of her career-high 30-point games came in conference play.

Hall of Frowiss Phipps was consistently good at Pepperdine, leading the Waves in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and free-throws made in each of her three seasons there. Her senior season the Waves finished 17-11 and were knocked out of the first WCC Tournament ever played. She points to losing in the tournament and missing out on a conference title with Pepperdine was one of her toughest athletic moments.

Frowiss Phipps was a four-year starter at Santa Barbara High in girls basketball and softball.

Shannon is now a mother of three with husband Tim Phipps. The family lives in Valencia.

Bradlee Van Pelt Outstanding Athlete

Bradlee Van Pelt graduated from San Marcos High School in 1999 and was a nationally recognized quarterback at Colorado State. An exceptional career led him to be selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the .

While at CSU, Van Pelt became only the fourth player in NCAA history to throw for at least 5,000 yards and rush for more than 2,000 yards during a career. During his

senior season, Van Pelt flirted with becoming the first collegiate quarterback to pass

Fame Fame for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. He led the Rams to three consecutive bowl appearances and was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year twice.

At San Marcos, he was recruited from Santa Barbara after a senior season in which he excelled at two positions. Van Pelt totaled 1,265 yards and 13 touchdowns throwing and 1,294 yards and 24 TDs rushing. On defense, he had 41 tackles and three interceptions. He was named the CIF Division IV Player of the Year, adding the Channel League MVP and All-County Player of the Year awards.

Van Pelt started his college career at Michigan State before transferring to Colorado State. He played three games in the NFL during his two-year stint as a backup with the Broncos. He also spent time with the Houston Texans.

His San Marcos career included being a member of the Royals’ 1998 CIF champion boys soccer team. He was a three-sport athlete adding baseball in the spring.

Van Pelt’s coach at Colorado State, , described his quarterback as a special football player.

“I’ve never seen a player as competitive and as tough as Bradlee Van Pelt. He willed us to victories,” said Lubick, who gave Van Pelt the opportunity to play quarterback in college. “(I told him) ‘we’re going to give you a shot at quarterback. Now if you don’t make it don’t come crying to me. Don’t come back to me.’ And he went out there and you could see each game he got a little bit better and became something special. He worked so hard.”

Kimi Wong Outstanding Athlete

Dos Pueblos’ 2005 CIF-champion softball team will always have a place in local athletics history and Kimi Wong was not just the Most Valuable Player of that team, but

Fame the entire CIF division as well.

The 2005 CIF title was the first in school history for Dos Pueblos’ proud softball program. Wong absolutely dominated that year, setting school records with 19 shutouts and 308 strikeouts. She had an ERA of 0.47 in over 30 starts. At the plate, she was second on the team in home runs and RBI. Wong came through in the title game, pitching a 1-0 shutout against Paramount while also driving in the winning run on a clutch late-inning hit.

Wong calls that CIF championship one of her proudest athletic achievements. Her time spent with her travel team, the Orange County Batbusters, is also dear to Wong. Pitching in a national championship game for her club team was one of her favorite sports moments.

Wong went on to play four years at Penn State.

The 2005 CIF championship year was the pinnacle of her prep career but Wong was a varsity standout for four years. She was named Channel League MVP twice.

Hall of

Her college career was highlighted by All-Academic Big Ten honors all four years. She left Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in Communications with a focus on advertising and a minor in Business & Liberal Arts.

Wong has returned to Santa Barbara to begin her post-athletic career, recently taking a new job as a CloudSuite Specialist for North America Programs.

Dan Cordero Community Leader

Daniel Cordero, a Santa Barbara High graduate of 1960 who’s been a Carpinteria resident since 1968, has been giving back to the local sports community for more than four decades.

Fame Cordero has had a full life: longtime local youth coach, high school JV & Varsity coach, youth sports coordinator, board member, referee, loving husband of 49 years, father of five, grandfather of 14, U.S. Marine.

Generations of Carpinteria athletes know Dan as a caring coach, role model and standout supporter. Many more benefit from his efforts that don’t even know it.

“I guess I can be described as persistent, and never satisfied when I feel enough isn’t being done to -start projects that need to be done,” Cordero says. “I guess it is just some of the residue left over from my time in the Marines.”

“’No’ and ‘Maybe’ should never be an option.”

Cordero said he was shaped in a positive way by his experiences at the downtown Boys and Girls Club as a Santa Barbara youth growing up on the East Side. He’s since

Hall of served as Athletic Director and Board President for the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, while also filling a board role at the Santa Barbara B&GC.

He spent 34 years in the announcer’s booth at Carpinteria High football games as a spotter and is currently still actively involved in local youth football in Carpinteria.

Dan and Barbara have much to celebrate this year. After Dan’s Hall of Fame induction, the pair is looking forward to a 50th wedding anniversary in August.

“I have enjoyed being involved with the young people in our community for the last 43 years and working with the other coaches, administrators, parents and community members to provide a safe, healthy athletic environment in the city we locals like to call ‘Carpas.’”

2015 Hall of Fame Program.indd 12 5/11/2015 4:09:40 PM Russ Hargreaves Memorial Award Beverly Lewis, Club West 2015 Beverley Lewis, president of Club West Youth Track and the Track & Field, has been involved in promoting and cross country in the Santa Barbara area for over 25 years. Club West, Inc., formed in 1972 by Olympian Jim Ryun in Santa Barbara, evolved into masters track and field, and, later, under Beverley’s leadership, youth. A former world class athlete, Beverley represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games winning a Bronze Medal in the Long Jump. She also won the Australian, French and Italian Long Jump titles and was a member of two Australian Olympic training squads. She also recorded an equal 7th fastest of all time in the 100 yds in winning the Australian Interstate Championship. She still holds Long Jump and 100 yds records from her former club, (St. George A.A.C) in Sydney. Special Six years ago the City of Santa Barbara partnered with Club West to provide free cross country at four Junior High Schools, and ten elementary schools. Still taking place under Beverly’s leadership is an all-school Junior High cross country meet, free track and field curricula and a track meet for our A-OK (After school Opportunities for Kids and RAP (Recreation After School Program) elementary school participants. Her patience, energy and passion for giving every participant (many very new to track and field) the ultimate track meet experience was a joy to see. Beverley is married to Robert Lewis, TV film director and producer and current Professor at Cal State Northridge’s nationally ranked film school. They have resided in Montecito since 1985.

Russ Hargreaves was a dedicated member of the Santa Barbara Recreation Department. He spent a lifetime creating opportunities for others to enjoy the benefits of recreational activities. He loved jogging and was committed to total body fitness. He knew that a healthy mind and body were the first steps to a happy and productive life. This award is given to a person recognized by the Parks &

Recreation Department as a leader in maintaining quality sports programs

Awards Awards R.F. MacFarland Memorial Trophy Jake Clinton, Nite Moves Jake Clinton, a 36-year resident of Santa Barbara, is one of the “Three Amigos” who started the immensely popular Nite Moves Summer Sunset Series in 1989, and he’s stuck with it as its director through all 27 of its years. The event – a run, swim, or combined Aquathon that begins at Leadbetter Beach – is held every Wednesday night - this year from April 29 through Aug. 26. Music, food, and beverages cap every Nite Moves. “It started out mostly with male runners, and then evolved into a social scene as women joined our ranks six, seven years into it,” Clinton said. The 298 who showed up for the first Nite Moves was about 100 more than Clinton had expected. They averaged 500 a night that year, prompting them to lengthen the season to reduce the weekly turnout to “a workable number.” “The annual participant list roughly averages 2,800,” Clinton said. “I expect on average 400 in the park, be that registered swimmers, runners, just friends, or regular park visitors.” He also served in 1989 as race director for the News-Press 10K, and took over the operation of the Pier To Peak Half Marathon in 1998. In 1999 he started the Thanksgiving Day 4 miler, while keeping the preregistration fees low “as a thank you to the community.”

R.F. MacFarland was one of the founders of Semana Nautica in 1936. This award is given annually to the person or organization who best exemplifies community leadership in the area of sports and athletics. It is sponsored by The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department, local media and the Semana Nautica Association.

2015 Hall of Fame Program.indd 13 5/11/2015 4:09:41 PM Master Athlete Award 2015 Nash Jimenez The SB Running & Racing Team’s most decorated runner is 65-year-old Ignacio “Nash” Jimenez. Jimenez grew up in downtown Goleta in the ’50s. “Our feet were the only means of transportation,” he said. “We’d run away from the older kids. If they caught you, they’d beat you up.”

He took up competitive running in his forties in Tennessee, where he was a minor-league ballpark groundskeeper. He was working at the Dodgers-White Sox spring training complex in Arizona when Joe DeVreese brought him back to Santa Barbara four years ago to help with the S.B. Running Company.

In his early years growing up in Goleta, Nash was an all around athlete, but became known best for his running. As a masters runner Nash had impressive times in many distances, with PR’s of 14:35 in the 5K, 29:30 in the 10K and a 2:29 marathon time. In his early 40’s Nash was a two time winner of the Running Journal Masters Circuit, a season long competition across 14 states.

Nash was honored by the Round Table in 2013 as an Open Athlete. Most recently Nash fished second in his age group at the U.S.A. Masters Cross Country Championships on February 7, 2015 in Boulder, Colorado, and followed up two weeks later with first place in his age group at the U.S.A. Masters 8K Road Championships in Brea, CA.

Awards In addition to his running accomplishments Nash is a well respected member of the local running community and an inspirational coach. Nash has given his time and expertise as a volunteer running coach for Santa Barbara High School and Girls Inc. and now coaches elementary school age kids through SB Running’s Kids Coyotes as well as both elite and recreational running groups.

This award was established and endowed by Louise Lowry Davis to encourage the continued participation in competitive sports, regardless of age. It is given for achievement by an athlete over the age of 40 years.
