Google Toolbar for Enterprise Admin Guide
Google Toolbar for Enterprise Admin Guide ● Introduction ● Technical Overview ● Downloading the Software ● Configuring the Group Policies ❍ Preferences ❍ Enterprise Integration ❍ Custom Buttons ❍ Popup Whitelist ● Defining Custom Buttons ● Pushing Out the Policy to User Registries ● Installing Google Toolbar on User Machines Introduction back to top This document contains information about setting up Google Toolbar for Enterprise. Google Toolbar is an end-user application that adds a search bar and other useful web tools to the Internet Explorer browser window. Google Toolbar for Enterprise makes it easy to provide enterprise users with the Google Toolbar and to create standards for its use. The document was written for Windows domain administrators. As an administrator, you can install and configure Google Toolbar for all users. By defining enterprise-wide policies for Google Toolbar, you can decide which buttons and features users can access. For example, you could remove the feature that saves search history, whitelist certain pages to exempt them from the popup blocker, or prevent users from sending votes to Google about their favorite web pages . You can configure policies before installing Google Toolbar for the users, or at any subsequent time. Google Toolbar also provides the ability to create custom buttons that display specified pages, direct searches to predefined systems, or display information from an RSS feed. Using Google Toolbar for Enterprise, you can define buttons for all users, using data from your own network or from the Internet. For example, you could create a custom button that directs a user's search to your Google Search Appliance or Google Mini to display a corporate web page or show important phone numbers from your intranet. -

Oracle Takes on IBM and HP with Hardware, Software and Services Triple Play by Arif Mohamed
CW+ a whitepaper from ComputerWeekly Oracle takes on IBM and HP with hardware, software and services triple play by Arif Mohamed This has been a landmark year for Oracle, the technology company headed by the charismatic and staggeringly wealthy Larry Ellison. Ellison, who is 65, has been chief executive officer since he founded Oracle in June 1977. He was listed the sixth richest person in the world in 2010. And his personal wealth of $27bn is a clear indication of Oracle’s success as an IT supplier. Oracle began the year by completing its $7.4bn acquisition of Sun Microsystems. The deal transformed Oracle from a software and consulting company, into a company able to compete on software, hardware and services. The deal gave Oracle Sun’s MySQL database, Sparc/Solaris servers, plus Sun’s storage hardware and flagship Java portfolio of tools and technologies. 2010 also marked the conclusion of an aggressive spending spree that has seen Oracle buying over 66 technology companies since 2002. These include CRM suppliers Siebel and PeopleSoft, middleware giant BEA Systems and storage specialist StorageTek. Six years on, Oracle has announced the fruits of its integration work, which began in 2004 when it bought PeopleSoft, which owned JD Edwards. Although Oracle has integrated the suites of applications from each subsequent merger to some degree, but it has now revealed a suite of software, Fusion Applications, which promises to unite them all for the first time through a common middleware layer, and run on optimised hardware from the Sun acquisition. Its Fusion Applications range of enterprise products, due out in January, will also give an upgrade path to enterprise users of Oracle’s legacy CRM and other business packages including PeopleSoft, Siebel and JD Edwards. -

This year’s conference hosted more than 60,000 Oracle customers and partners from 175 countries. Not only that, the livestream of the keynote sessions was viewed by 19 million virtual attendees. It’s not OpenWorld without Oracle co-founder, Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison leading the charge. With Ellison, whom Forbes magazine lists as the 10th wealthiest person in the world, still calling the shots, no one can deny that Oracle remains a fighter. Oracle rarely competes in any segment without a top-down commitment to win the predominant market share, nail down all the banner enterprise accounts and vanquish all rivals. At this year’s OpenWorld at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Ellison left no doubt that Oracle is not sitting still in the public cloud arena. -

Twenty Years of Berkeley Unix : from AT&T-Owned to Freely
Twenty Years of Berkeley Unix : From AT&T-Owned to Freely Redistributable Marshall Kirk McKusick Early History Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie presented the first Unix paper at the Symposium on Operating Systems Principles at Purdue University in November 1973. Professor Bob Fabry, of the University of California at Berkeley, was in attendance and immediately became interested in obtaining a copy of the system to experiment with at Berkeley. At the time, Berkeley had only large mainframe computer systems doing batch processing, so the first order of business was to get a PDP-11/45 suitable for running with the then-current Version 4 of Unix. The Computer Science Department at Berkeley, together with the Mathematics Department and the Statistics Department, were able to jointly purchase a PDP-11/45. In January 1974, a Version 4 tape was delivered and Unix was installed by graduate student Keith Standiford. Although Ken Thompson at Purdue was not involved in the installation at Berkeley as he had been for most systems up to that time, his expertise was soon needed to determine the cause of several strange system crashes. Because Berkeley had only a 300-baud acoustic-coupled modem without auto answer capability, Thompson would call Standiford in the machine room and have him insert the phone into the modem; in this way Thompson was able to remotely debug crash dumps from New Jersey. Many of the crashes were caused by the disk controller's inability to reliably do overlapped seeks, contrary to the documentation. Berkeley's 11/45 was among the first systems that Thompson had encountered that had two disks on the same controller! Thompson's remote debugging was the first example of the cooperation that sprang up between Berkeley and Bell Labs. -
