Italy has long been a centre of excellence in the field of Intensive and Critical Care, and local talent has been combined with a long list of international speakers to create what promises to be an exceptional programme. The focus of the scientific programme will be the “state of the art” of our fields as well as new insights into basic science, clinical research and therapeutic interventions. The Scientific Committee is currently developing a programme that will consider refresher courses, lectures, symposia, panel discussions, workshops and, of course, free oral communications and poster presentations. During the Congress, an exhibition will be held over a large area: exhibitors from countries around the globe will give participants an opportunity to experience the latest available medical technologies. As well as the scientific programme, we have planned a series of social events that should allow you to learn a little more about Florence and the wonderful region of Tuscany. Florence has much to offer: a rich cultural and historical life, great food and, during the summer, a busy series of world-class entertainment events. I’m looking forward to seeing you in August! Luciano Gattinoni President of Società Italiana di Anestesia, Analgesia, Rianimazione e Terapia Intensiva (SIAARTI) Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Council of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine may I extend a warm welcome to the 10th World Congress. It also gives me great pleasure formally to invite medical professional and industry colleagues to participate and join us in this major event. This is the first occasion that the World Congress has been hosted at a European venue since 1993. The excellence of the scientific programme and faculty of speakers combined with the historical and cultural attractions of the beautiful city of Florence will provide a unique opportunity to share experiences and knowledge in intensive and critical care medicine. This will be a memorable event and one which should not be missed. The central role of the World Federation is to promote the highest standards of care for the critically ill patient and the 10th World Congress will be an important step towards the achievement of this goal. I look forward to welcoming you to Florence in August. Yours faithfully José Besso President of World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM) 4 Invitation Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Council of the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses (WFCCN), I am delighted to pledge our joint support and collaboration with the WFSICCM, SIAARTI and ANIARTI to again host a quadrennial critical care congress that celebrates the development and achievement of world wide critical care practice in the Italian city of Florence in August 2009. The significance of this quadrennial meeting has taken centre stage on the critical care calendar every 4 years and the 2009 Florence Congress promises to be one of the most significant meetings for multidisciplinary collaborative participation in our history. WFCCN encourage critical care nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and industry partners throughout the world to join us in celebrating and participating in this important and professionally stimulating week. We congratulate our medical and nursing colleagues in Italy and throughout the world for contributing their time and resources to the development of this meeting and look forward to joining you in what promises to be a great week of learning and sharing in Florence, 28 August - 1 September. Ged Williams President of World Federation of Critical Care Nurses (WFCCN) Dear Colleagues, It is a great privilege to welcome you to Florence on behalf of the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS). WFPICCS is made up of societies throughout the world (including nurses, doctors and other professionals) who share a common interest in the care of critically ill or injured children or neonates. Pediatric critical care is a relatively young discipline that is rapidly expanding and developing. The nature of pediatric critical care varies enormously across the world, and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet with each other, with adult intensivists and intensive care nurses so that we can learn from each other; share our experiences; discuss challenging issues and renew our enthusiasm and passion for the care of the critically ill. The organizing committee have put together an exciting programme, both scientifically and socially, and this in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is wonderful to meet in a city which is so steeped in history and culture. We would like to congratulate our colleagues from Italy for hosting this great event; thank the adult and nursing world federations for inviting us to share this occasion with them; and invite all those with an interest in intensive and critical care for children to join us at this meeting, which will be challenging, exciting and most of all fun… With best wishes Andrew Argent President of World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS) 5 Florence 2009 Committees Steering Committee International Scientific Committee Chairman Honorary President Luciano Gattinoni (Milan) Max Harry Weil (USA) A.
