The Odyssey of Five Locomotives: 1835-1965 Benjamin F. G. Kline, Jr. On October 21, 1864, this item appeared in the Lancaster newspaper: "The locomotive works, operated by J. A. Norris, has been contracted for delivery of five locomotives to the Western Pacific Railroad in California." Let us examine this for more detail. First, the Western Pacific Rail- road — chartered December 13, 1862 — in November 1869, was consoli- dated with the San Francisco Bay Railroad, which was chartered Septem- ber 25, 1868. Following this consolidation, it retained the name of the Western Pacific Railroad until June 23, 1870, when it was in turn consol- idated with the Central Pacific Railroad of California. The consolidated line became a part of the Central Pacific Railroad of California. The Western Pacific Railroad and the San Francisco Bay Railroad linked Sacramento with Oakland and the San Francisco area. This provided the Central Pacific with a connection to the San Francisco area. The original Western Pacific was a line 123.45 miles in length; the consolidation with the San Francisco Bay Railroad Company added about 22.5 miles to this, giving the consolidated Western Pacific Railroad a total mileage of approximately 146 miles. A sheet issued November 6, 1868 listed all Central Pacific motive power with their specifications. Also listed separately were the ten locomo- tives which were received from the Western Pacific Railroad. The first five are of no interest to us because they were Baldwin and Mason pro- ducts. The remaining five were listed as being built by Norris of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Second, let us look at the builder. -

This is a sufficiently big story that we’re going to change the usual order of these bytes to lead with it… and off we go… N SCALE NEW RELEASE PASSENGER CARS: 160 00 110, $29.95 Road Number: 2347 (will be “NYC 2347” in website listings). Heavyweight Single Window Coach, New York Central. Pullman Green with black roof, underframe and trucks (four-wheel trucks). Imitation gold lettering including roadname top center and road number at bottom center. Approximate Time Period: early 1940s into the 1960s. I think it’s safe to say that this is one of the most eagerly anticipated body styles to come from the folks in Talent. I don’t know who is more excited about getting it to market—N Scalers or Micro-Trains itself. The production logistics of this car, chiefly the ability to reproduce the very narrow spacing between the single windows, was, to put it mildly, non-trivial. I don’t remember when this car was initially announced, but it was discussed back in 2016 on one of the major discussion boards. The 2347 was part of the series 2314 to 2353 with forty cars. The Canada Southern website includes an undated photo in glorious black and white of sister car 2316. -

But nothing in New York stands still – certainly not the subway - and the approach to subway style has evolved, reflecting the major stages of the system’s construction during the early 1900s, the teens, and the late 20s and early 30s and the renovations and redesigns of later years. The earliest parts of the system still convey the flowery, genteel flavor of a smaller, older city. Later sections, by contrast, show a conscious turn toward the modern, including open admiration for the system’s raw structural power. The evolution of subway design follows the trajectory of the world of art and architecture as these came to terms with the Industrial revolution, and the tug-of-war between a traditional deference to European models and a modernist ideology demanding an honest expression of contemporary industrial technology.” —Subway style: 100 years of Architecture & Design in the New York City Subway New York City, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was an industrial hub attracting many Americans from rural communities looking for work, and immigrants looking for better lives. It was, however, blighted by impoverished neighborhoods of broken down tenements and social injustice. The city lacked a plan for how it should look, where structures should be built, or how services should be distributed. It was described as a ‘ragged pincushion of towers’ with no government regulation over the urban landscape. -

ORG AUGUST 2016 THE READING TODAY - 1942 Huge, Short-Haul Coal Drags Keep This System’s Wheels Rolling BY BERT PENNYPACKER - COURTESY OF CHAPTER FRIEND PAUL KUTTA Fast passenger trains may be exciting, but it’s freight that brings home the bacon - over 90% of it for Reading Company. More revenue is received from transporting freight of types other than coal, but the “black diamond” traffic provides reliable and steady income that keeps the road on its feet financially. Importance of Reading as a coal-carrier may be shown by the fact that nearly half of its freight cars are coal hoppers (15,500 hoppers out of a total of 32,500 freight cars). Practically all anthracite (hard) coal transported originates on Reading lines. What’s more, the system hauls over POWER PLUS ! NO. 2017 SOUTHBOUND FROM ST. CLAIR YARDS AT PORT CARBON , PA., 80% as much bituminous (soft) coal as anthracite, . WITH A HEAVY COAL DRAG although little originates in its territory. This traffic is obtained principally from the Western Maryland and Pennsylvania railroads at Harrisburg, and New York Central at Newberry Junction. Black diamonds, which are of inestimable value to the railroad today, almost ruined the system years ago. Between 1869 and 1881, the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company (P&RC&I), an associated coal organization, bought many thousands of acres of anthracite coal lands in Pennsylvania. This imposed a tremendous financial burden on the then Philadelphia & Reading Railway, and threw it into receivership several times. -

Underground Music: Bottom-up Culture for New York City Understanding the Value of Music Performances in Subway Stations Course: Markets, Design & the City | Professor: Alain Bertaud | Student: Francisca Benitez | Spring 2017 INTRODUCTION On May 4, 2015, the world-renowned band U2 performed in disguised in one of New York City’s subway stations. After gathering a small crowd and some looks for a couple of minutes, they got off their buskers’ costumes and played for approximately forty people. That same year, the band was in third place in the list of highest-grossing tours of 2015, with their Innocence + Experience World Tour taking in $133.6 million (Forbes, 2016). The thirty-six shows in North America were sold out, with an average ticket price of $117. That day on Grand Central Subway, people could see them for the price of a subway ride. As U2 did that time, there are many musicians that busk daily in NYC subway stops to reach a big and diverse audience. They do it as their main source of income, for practice and/or for promotional reasons. With an average weekday ridership of 5,650,610 passengers in 2015 (MTA, 2016), subway stations have one of the biggest audiences in the world (as a reference, the 36 shows in U2’s North American tour accounted for 650,682 tickets sold). According to the Center for an Urban Future, one of New York City’s main comparative advantages is its cultural sector. That being said, its cultural assets are unequally distributed across the city and concentrated in its most affluent neighborhoods. -
