The Dragonlord's infamous offer of half the world lent itself to a scenario that would easily explain why the game's setting was in dire need of rebuilding in the first place, and not clash with the design sensibilities the series is known for. The initial planning document specified that the game would be an open-world style adventure in which all areas were connected, rather than featuring sequential chapters that remove the resources accumulated previously. Director Kazuya Niinou proposed a change to this plan, citing that if players completed one area and moved to the next with their materials still accessible, the game would become too easy and not rewarding to play. He suggested a switch to the chapter format, which would have the added benefit of giving more distinction to each area and the people within along with resolving the difficulty Dragon Quest Builders issues.

    A Message to Our Shareholders Yosuke Matsuda President and Representative Director 02 Thank you for your continued support of the Square Enix Group. With your support, we made the fiscal year ended March 2016 one of record net sales and profit attributable to owners of parent as the structural reforms and content investments we have engaged in since I assumed the role of CEO have gradually begun to produce benefits. The past fiscal year was also one in which we launched new initiatives designed to take our Group to further growth. I am pleased to take this opportunity to present this review of our achievements and progress in each of our business segments and to describe the strategies and direction we plan to take going forward. Digital Entertainment Business Segment Business Segment In the fiscal year ended March 2016, games for smart devices continued to demonstrate strong Overview growth in the Japanese market, driving overall Group earnings. New titles released in the first half of the fiscal year ended March 2016, such as “MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY” and “KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained ,” which leverage key IP (intellectual property), delivered brisk performances throughout the fiscal year. Titles such as “HOSHI NO DRAGON QUEST,” “FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS,” and “Grimms Notes” released in the second half of the fiscal year were also strong performers right out of the gate. With this accumulation of new titles, the percentage of total Digital Entertainment Business Segment sales accounted for by games for smart devices saw significant year-on-year growth in the fiscal year ended March 2016.

Sandbox building meets Action JRPGs Introduction Since 1986, the Dragon Quest series, created by Yuji Horii, has been one of the main Role-Playing Game series internationally (2016). The series gained fame outside of Japan as Dragon Warriors, before it became known as Dragon Quest. A new addition to this series is Dragon Quest Builders (2016), a ブロックメイク RPG that combines role-playing game elements with Minecraft mechanics. DQB tries to combine the idea of Minecraft’s open sandbox mechanics with a structured storyline. However, this combination of structure and freedom raises a series of questions: Research questions How has Minecraft influenced this important Japanese game series? How does the roleplay/story- mode influence the Minecraft-like/sandbox freedom of DQB? What is the relation between the story mode and the free building mode of the game? Method We critically compare the sandbox style mechanics and gameplay of Minecraft to DQB, and examine how the emphasis on story, quests and characters change the sandbox openness of Minecraft into a more restricted game type. For this analysis we use quest theory (Tosca 2003, Aarseth 2005) and game mechanics theories, e.g. Sicart (2008). In the analysis we show how Minecraft’s total openness and flexibility is contained by the need for keeping the narrative development on track. DQB consists of two different modes, a progressing story mode and an open-world landscape, but the connection between the two is one-way: items and characters from the story mode can be brought to the open sandbox mode, but not vice versa.
