R O S E & H O N E Y Lips Lips! They can be a statement, or a simple compliment to the rest of the face. It’s so easy to throw on a red lip and mascara and be done quickly, and still look polished. My mom has always told me, “if you’re having a bad hair day, wear lipstick.” And I have to say, that has absolutely come in handy. Lipstick can be a statement. It’s loud, it’s bold, and it distracts. You don’t have time to do anything with your makeup but you want to look pulled together? Go bare faced with a bold lip color. When deciding how to compliment eyes with lips, you want to keep your color scheme in mind (eyes, cheeks, lips). If you’re wearing a bolder eye look with brighter colors, slapping on a clear lip gloss or lip balm can look great, because you aren’t distracting from the eyes but you still have a finished look. If you have nothing or almost nothing on the eyes, it could be fun to play with a bold lip color that compliments your skin tone. It’s important to keep your skin tone in mind when picking out flattering lip colors, because you don’t want the color to end up looking powdery against the skin. Let’s talk about different types of lip products. There are liquid lipsticks, normal lipsticks (bullet/stick form), lip liners, lip glosses, lip stains, lip oils, metallic lips, lip toppers, and of course, lip balms. That’s kind of a lot to take in. So let’s break it down! Liquid lipsticks: They are exactly how they sound - liquified lipsticks. But unlike your traditional lipstick, they go on wet and (usually) dry to a matte finish. They can feel kind of heavy depending on the brand, and can dry so much to the point where you want to rip it off. But, there are some finishes that you can keep an eye out for that won’t make you want to rip off your lips - velvet, satin, or comfort matte. They’re much less intense than a full matte finish, and will still last forever. Liquid lips can be great, but you have to be more careful. Here are some wonderful options with super comfortable formulas: • Bite Beauty amuse bouche liquified lipstick • Maybelline superstay matte ink lip color Traditional Lipstick: I love a good tube of lipstick because it makes me think of growing up and playing with my mom’s Bobbi Brown lipsticks. In this day and age, traditional bullets of lipstick are usually forgotten, because of all the new and crazy lip products. But, just because you might not be inclined to reach for a tube of lipstick, doesn’t mean that you can’t use that traditional formula in a different form. There are many brands turning normal bullet lipsticks into pencils and sticks. I love those, because they give you more control when applying, but still give you that beautiful old hollywood look. • Bite Beauty multistick • Bite Beauty amuse bouche lipstick • Nudestix magnetic matte lip color • Nudestix intense matte lip + cheek pencil • Nudestix gel color lip + cheek balm • Any Maybelline bullet lipsticks Lip liner: The name implies that lip liners are only used to line the lips, but liners can totally be used as lipstick, as long as you’re using a formula that it isn’t too dry. It’s easy to shape the lips, fill it in, and pop out the door. • Bite Beauty the lip pencil Lip glosses: Ughhhh I love lip gloss. It’s so gorgeous and juicy and I love it. For me, my favorite way to wear it is by doing a super bold colorful look on the eyes, and then a clear lip gloss. It gives that editorial wet look to the lips, without clashing with the eyes. You can also find products like lip lacquers - which have the same feel and finish as a gloss, but with full pigmentation. Traditional lip gloss just gives a sheer wash of color. • Glossier lip gloss • Too Faced melted latex liquified high shine lipstick Lip stains/oils: The beauty of lip products is that no matter how bold the color is, you can turn it into a stain. Place the product on the center of the lips, and use your finger to blend the product onto the rest of the lips. By keeping the color more concentrated in the center and faded around the outside, it gives you a natural blotted lip, and a stain of color. If you’re looking for a bolder lip, pack it on. Lip stains are usually matte, which is what differentiates them between lip oils. Lip oils are similar to stains in the sense that they give you that popsicle lip style, but they are super sheer and glossy looking. Oils will also have some antioxidant nutrients in them which are great for the lips. • Glossier generation G • Colourpop blotted lip • Burts Bees tinted lip oil • e.l.f tinted lip oil Metallic lips/toppers: Metallic lips used to be all the rage with a crazy glittery pop on the lips meant to really stand out. But not all metallic lips are just as bold and glittery. There are a few wearable ones on the market, that give you the look of a lip gloss, but without the stickiness. Metallic lips are always matte, so they can stay in place without getting glitter all over. Lip toppers are similar to metallic lips, but more sheer so you can wear them over other colors. • MAC retro matte liquid metallic lipcolour • Colourpop ultra metallic lip Lip balms: Lip balm is so underrated! You can get tinted ones that will give you a wash of color, metallic ones to give your lips some dimension without the intensity of a metallic lipstick, or just your average normal lip balm. And sometimes they have SPF in them! They’re awesome! And they take care of your lips. Don’t forget about lip balm! • Glossier balm dotcoms • Kopari coconut lip glossy • Pacifica color quench lip tint.
