GETTING TO KNOW JULY 2015 YOU, NEW YORK New York is a great place to live, full of arts, culture, beautiful towns and festivals. Numerous charitable organizations also give back to the local community, with programs providing food, shelter, medical assistance and more. This month, WLIW profiles some of these great places and organizations in the metropolitan area. The New York Emmy Award-winning program Best Places to Live chronicles life in Port Washington/Manhasset (Tuesday, July 21 at 7:30pm), two towns on the northwestern shore of Long Island that cater to families, boating enthusiasts and nature lovers. Hosted by Cristina Cuomo, editor-in-chief of Manhattan and Beach magazines, this episode takes a look at the interesting communities, gorgeous homes and special annual events “HarborFest” and “SOUPer Bowl.” The annual HarborFest and Craft Fair attracts over 12,000 visitors and offers a unique setting for food, games, entertainment, music, various vendors and handmade items. The SOUPer Bowl competition among local restaurants raises money for the town’s Twin Pines Consumers Food Pantry and funds other local projects. Faces of Philanthropy highlights various forms of altruism throughout the tri-state area. The newest episode focuses on Hunger (Tuesday, July 28 at 7:30pm) and the many ways New York- based organizations are combatting it. The Food Bank for NYC provides groceries for needy families and individuals and City Harvest rescues food from restaurants, grocery stores and other providers. God’s Love We Deliver and City Meals on Wheels create and deliver prepared dishes to the sick and elderly who cannot cook and rarely venture away from home. Celebrity chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain, Daniel Boulud and Marcus Samuelsson, are interviewed about their work with these organizations and the impact they have on the community at large.
