  • How to Refresh a Maturing Reality Genre
How to Refresh a Maturing Reality Genre 06.04.2014 As the unscripted genre matures, producers need to find ways to bring a bit more uncertainty and surprise to reality programming or risk boring audiences. That was the conclusion of a panel of unscripted programming vets as they kicked off the RealScreen West conference in Santa Monica on Wednesday. "I think that the reality genre is maturing. There was a while there when anything you put on the air was fresh and worked. Now I think we're at a stage where not everything is working," said Nancy Daniels, TLC's general manager. "The audience feels like they've seen everything." CAA's Alan Braun, who reps creatives and producers of unscripted staples like "Big Brother" and "Dancing with the Stars" said that recent waves of consolidation among companies have created a crisis of fear where creativity can be stifled by a desire to maximize profits. But Braun said there was one key to keeping the genre fresh: finding captivating characters. "We don't need to over think our genre; It starts with great characters," Braun said. "There's character, there's content, and there's a little bit of process. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. We're evolving as a genre that's been around for 15-20 years. We're trying to find new characters." Daniels and Braun appeared alongside World of Wonder co-founder Fenton Bailey, All3Media America chair Stephen Lambert, Bunim/Murray Productions chair Jonathan Murray, and Lifetime Networks EVP and GM Rob Sharenow.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Dissertations - ALL by an authorized administrator of SURFACE. For more information, please contact [email protected]. ABSTRACT This dissertation presents three and a half years of ethnographic data from an “LGBT” charter school. It explores how gender and sexuality appear within educational spaces and how providing students an anti-heteronormative inclusive education impacts a student’s sense of self. I show how critical pedagogy is deployed as an anti-heteronormative approach to supporting all students. The term anti-heteronormative is used to express an explicit rejection of heterosexism and genderism, acknowledging the complex oppressive factors that develop given the normative expectations of gender and sexuality and the impact such expectations have on all bodies and all students. Findings reveal how the juxtaposition of the inclusive space provided by the school and the heteronormative expectations of the outside world collide in complex ways for students. Bullying and challenges to inclusion persist. Critical pedagogy serves to help students assess the meaning bullying has for themselves and others.

  • Tori Spelling Is Hospitalized Amidst Marriage Troubles
Tori Spelling Is Hospitalized Amidst Marriage Troubles By Louisa Gonzales Tori Spelling has been hospitalized, according to UsMagazine.com. It seems the pressure on the mother of four, her marriage and the show has finally taken its toll on her. The 90210 alum, 40, has been letting the world see all her relationship problems with husband Dean McDermott, who recently was revealed to have had an affair with 28-year-old Emily Goodhand, on her Lifetime reality series True Tori. The show follows the couple as they try to work on salvaging what’s left of their relationship, but with Spelling shouting how her partner is never going to be, “happy with just me” it seems there is still troubles in the water for the pair. How do you support your partner mid-split? Cupid’s Advice: When your relationship is dissolving it can be some of the hardest points in your life. Towards the end of your romantic relationship it can be hard to not hold resentment towards your partner or to not put the blame on the failing relationship on them, or to even still show your support towards them. Cupid has some advice on how you support your partner mid-split. 1. Still be there for them: Nothing shows your support like simply being there for someone. Everyone wants someone to be there for them when they’re down, need support or someone to relay on and you can still at least try and be that person. Whatever kind of relationship you have with your significant other, even if it could possible be the end, it’s still good to be able show that you care about them.
