East has a “strike rate” of a premiership every 6.7 seasons since it joined the competition in 1966-67 whilst South’s strike rate with its 5 flags is a premiership every 10.8 seasons, its five flags achieved during its 15 seasons “golden era” between 1961-62 to 1976-77. It was East-Belmont’s 10th straight consecutive win this season and South’s first loss in its last 9 games.     THE STORY OF BILL JACKSON’S BATTLE TO PLAY VFL FOOTBALL What started out as a fairly straight-forward and brief story for the Virtual Yallourn website, about Bill Jackson, ‘mushroomed’ into an article of some length. Life’s journey is rarely a straight line; and this tale begins almost seventy years ago and has a few tricky twists and turns. Consequently, it seemed best to tell the story in two parts. The first deals with Bill Jackson’s attempt to play VFL football with Geelong; and the other part of the story centres upon Bill’s time as a pupil at the Yallourn High School in 1952 and 1953. It is hoped that the article does justice to Bill not only as an accomplished footballer with the Blues but also as a dedicated student at YHS. PART: 1 THE DOGMATIC DEMONS SETTING THE SCENE Late in 1953, one of the emerging young stars in local football, Bill ‘Ginger’ Jackson, was signed by the Melbourne Football Club. It was thrilling news for the sports-loving town of Yallourn; and a just reward for Bill’s dedicated training on the track and his courageous style of play on the field. In that era, Melbourne FC, under the leadership of the legendary Coach Norm Smith and Secretary Jim Cardwell, was undertaking an aggressive recruiting campaign to re-build the Demon’s stocks. Mr Cardwell was a ‘man on a mission’ in the way he hunted far and wide for potential senior footballers; and Bill Jackson was just one of many young footballers pressed to sign with Melbourne in those times.

    TH O’DOWD DECLARES 4 .April, 2014 Congratulations to the St.Josephs Cricket Club in winning its 3rd. GCA 1st.X1 flag, the last 25 years ago in season 1988-89. Being runners-up since that season in 1992-93, 1998-99, 2002-03 and 2003-04, it was a wonderful week-end for the Club. The “ script” could not have been written better as the season celebrated the Clubs 50th. year in District Cricket, joining the elite level of local cricket that season in 1964-65 instigated by Bro Stewart ,Chanel College also affiliating, the Chanel Club “folding” after just 7 seasons later but produced many excellent cricketers, the list headed by Mike Bowtell with 2,253 runs @ 46.9 plus bowlers Peter Connoley with 123 wickets @ 17.3 and David Ludowyk’s sensational 8/71 in an innings against St.Josephs in 1969-70. A night of celebrations by a trio of SJC Legends summed it all President Ian Courtney said “The 1st.X1 premiership victory was a just reward for the culmination of many years work from a huge number of people both on and off the field and we believe it will be the impetus for ongoing Club success” Ex-President Ken Gannon, despite his demanding job as the AFL Facilities and Project Manager (and gun opening former batsman at St.Josephs) reflected “It was great to be at the grand final and see a great bowling performance by Trent Walerys and then a great batting effort by Leigh Kentish with a stylish 75no (only bettered in a St.

The Minister went on to state his commitment ^to the opposition of tobacco company sponsorship of sporting events and would encourage the investigation of alternative means of funding to replace such sponsorships' (Evidence, p. S1145). 6.2 Mr Herb Elliott, a prominent Australian athlete summed up the dilemma regarding tobacco sponsorship of sport. In an ideal world I guess all of us would probably like to see products which are considered to be unhealthy not associated with sport. That would be in a situation where we had adequate funding. I have always believed that it is improper for an evangelist to impose upon people who are gutsing it out trying to make their sport work and who are . desperately short of funds, ... He went on to note: Under the current scheme, whilst you are reluctant to see products which are unhealthy being used to sponsor sport, as far as I am aware, nobody has yet come up with an alternative to replace the money, except this Victorian health foundation which has taken steps in that direction (Evidence, p. 1166). 66. 6.3 .As noted in an earlier chapter, the tobacco industry- will almost spend S20 million on sport sponsorship in 1989, of which, an estimated $12 million will go to the sports and $8 million to promotion.
