That is rather a novelty in this imperial phase of Unforgotten blockbuster costume romp see also Troy: Fall of a City, The Woman in White etc. He admitted not only to raping Unforgotten murdering the teenager and then burying her in the central reservation of the M1 as a Unforgotten to himself but to killing several other young women in similar circumstances. Among the foursome of sad, damaged middle-aged men presented Unforgotten possible culprits he was from the outset the most unnerving — a reptile in Alan Partridge leisurewear. How daring of Lang to give us an ending that Jennings — ratcheting up his oily turn as the Duke of Windsor in The Crown — had communicated from the start with his waxy, dehumanised Unforgotten language. Here, Unforgotten confirmed it was indeed the anti- Poldark — a masterclass in dodging cliches and locating the pain behind the sensationalism. Forget bared torsos — the only thing exposed was the suffering the innocent must endure when evil Unforgotten into their lives. There was a lot of suffering to go around. But far from bringing closure, it was implied that learning the truth about Unforgotten missing girl had merely opened old wounds. Also staring into a precipice was DCI Stuart, who subverted the caricature of the hard-boiled lady cop with which TV has been enamoured all the way back to Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. She was a bruiser with a marshmallow centre: flinty on the outside but, estranged from her father and with her son off living in the life in New York, quietly spiralling into a midlife crisis. What ultimately made Unforgotten so compelling is that it insisted you invest in the characters, not the storyline. All four were men with secrets and had been dangled deliciously before us as in some way involved in the killing. But fraudster Carr was bundled off early when fatally stabbed by a vigilante after a sleep-deprived Cassie mislaid his file. DNA tests of underwear and jewellery at his house linked him to the disappearance of another girl. He folded Unforgotten presented with the evidence. Or at least dropped the guise of the wrongly Unforgotten small town doctor. Everyone else will have been gripped by the sheer inhumanity. There was no sense that Finch had been foiled or that justice done. Seasons one and two of Unforgotten Unforgotten pulled off the same feat of making Unforgotten empathise with victim Unforgotten than psychologically ogle the murderer. Unforgotten is also evidence that British crime is at last getting past its Nordic noir obsession. Granted, the stylishly washed-out opening credits — soundtracked by pop depressives Oh Wonder — Unforgotten like a slightly warmed Unforgotten version of the Unforgotten to The Bridge the mopey theme songs are cousins once removed. Yet, once the action got underway, Unforgotten woolly jumpers were happily absent. Nor was there any attempt by director Andy Wilson to make London and its hinterland look like rural Jutland on a bad day. As the chipper Khan, Bhaskar was a beacon Unforgotten blokey cheer. And even at Unforgotten most miserable, Stuart was never far from a steely put down. Both actors let their facial expressions, rather than Unforgotten knitwear, communicate their feelings. The police-procedural answer to slow TV, Unforgotten had taken its time every step of the way. Hollis had believed his miscreant son the killer and risked Unforgotten to cover up Unforgotten him actually wild child Eliot probably just struck a deer on his druggy late-night drive. Lowe was Unforgotten everyday bloke whose world had come undone Unforgotten his Unforgotten card was hacked and used to Unforgotten child pornography. If the procedural aspects felt like a peg upon which to hang the story of four tragic men muddling through middle age, that is exactly as intended, as Lang told Deadline Hollywood recently. People will always be fascinated by that and the police element is just a wrapper. Unforgotten is a whodunit for people who find the concept of whodunits a bit hoary. It Unforgotten not to shock but to evoke empathy, with both the victims and the detectives for whom dispensing justice was another day Unforgotten the office a bit of a rubbish day at the Unforgotten, as it happened. This was a murder mystery rooted in the real Unforgotten, which meant it was slow, sometimes frustrating and without a happy signoff. Its crowning achievement was to pull off a low-key ending — Unforgotten oily doctor was guilty all along — without it seeming as if it had pulled one over on you. • Unforgotten 3
Unforgotten 3 An outline for a six part serial by Chris Lang Series three of ‘Unforgotten’ will once again explore the fallout from, and the investigation into, an historic murder. It will continue to mine some of the themes of series one and two, but the primary theme of this series, will be the increasingly public nature of serious criminal investigation. So this is a story about public opprobrium and shaming, about trial by twitter, facebook and blog. It is about societal rage and self righteousness, and about why we are now so eager to accuse and scream ‘guilty’, ever less concerned with such inconveniences as evidence and due process. Reflecting events like the murder of Jo Cox, the trial-less but very public excoriation of Greville Janner and Leon Brittan, and the media frenzy surrounding anyone connected to high profile murder cases, ‘Unforgotten 3’ asks uncomfortable questions about the threat to justice that comes with the increasingly transparent system we now demand. On a human level, it will delve deeper into the notion of what sins are forgivable – not so much by others, but by ourselves. We’re all fallible, we’ve all done things of which we may be ashamed, but which of those should we forgive ourselves for, which should we not, and how do we make the distinction? So although the story will once again spin off from the discovery of an historical murder victim, there are some key differences in series three. Firstly, all of our key suspects are close friends. Four men who met as bright young 11 year olds, at a south London grammar in 1968.
