LAST MEETING The Southern Utah vs. Southeastern match-up will be the conclusion of a home-and-home series. In their first meeting on Sept. 6, 2014, the Lions defeated the Thunderbirds 41-14 in Louisiana. Southeastern put up a 21-point fourth quarter to pull away from Southern Utah for a victory in the 2013 Football Championship Subdivision playoff participants at Strawberry Stadium. WORDS FROM COACH WARREN “I’m a little frustrated with some of the things we didn’t execute (against Utah). Small detailed things, wrong reads. We really had an opportunity to be in that game, and we shot ourselves in the foot. “Southeastern Louisiana has always had a lot of great athletes. They’re very fast, and they run a very similar style offense as Sam Houston State, and that’s going to be a challenge for us. “This is going to be a big challenge for us, and we’re going to have to have a big week in preparation to get ready for the game. They run a hard style of offense to stop. It’s a lot of motion and a lot of good athletes. That’s something we’ll work hard on defense—making sure we don’t get confused and make sure we’re able to tackle well. That’s going to be a key to the game.” SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA The Lion offense managed 203 total yards in their season opener at Oklahoma State. Southeastern was led by senior running back Kaelyn Henderson, who finished with 69 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Seniors Justin Alo (3-8, 94 yards) and D’Shaie Landor (1-6, 12 yards) split time at quarterback for the Lions. Alo was more effective in his time under center in the opener and is slated to make his first start as a Lion at Southern Utah. Southeastern will be looking to clean up mistakes, as Oklahoma State scored off of all four Southeastern turnovers in the loss. The Lion defense saw several standouts in the season-opening loss at Oklahoma State. Junior Javon Tillman led the Lions with 10 tackles, while junior Torrance Mosley added nine tackles in his Southeastern debut. Senior Caleb Young, senior Jon Taylor and junior Lee Spight all recorded sacks, while senior Will Hines recovered a fumble for Southeastern. SOUTHERN UTAH FOOTBALL 2016 DEMARIO WARREN COACHING HISTORY Southern Utah University | 2008-13....... Defensive Backs Coach Southern Utah Univerisity | 2014-15....... Defensive Coordinator Southern Utah University | 2016-Present................ Head Coach Demario Warren is currently in his first season as the head football coach at Southern Utah University. Warren has spent the past eight seasons with Southern Utah University, the last two serving as the defensive coordinator for one of the top defensive units in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). During his tenure, Coach Warren developed four draft rated prospects in first- team All-American, James Cowser, Miles Killebrew, LeShaun Sims and Dion Turner. Warren has had 18 All-Conference performers in eight years, including nine out of eleven defensive players earning All Big-Sky honors during the 2015 Big Sky Championship season. After the conclusion of the 2015 season, James Cowser was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year and ADA Defensive Play- er of the Year. In 2015, the Thunderbirds’ defense led the nation in turnover mar- gin. The defensive unit also shutout two teams durring the 2015 campaign, and held three more to seven or less points. Coach Warren arrived to SUU from UC Davis, where he was a three-year letter- man at running back before injuries cut short his career during his senior season. Coach Warren earned a starting spot with the Aggies in 2005 as a redshirt fresh- man when he finished second on the team in rushing. A native of Fairfield, California, Coach Warren earned his bachelor’s degree in African-American studies from UC Davis and earned an MBA degree from the University of Phoenix. Warren and his wife, Amanda, have three children, Dema- rio, Jr. (11), Jazelle (6) and Daylee (2).
