This thesis paper, as well as·the accompanying recital, delves into the topic of The Great American Songbook Through the Lens of Judy Garland. The Great American Songbook is a collection of American standard repertoire from the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. Judy Garland in particular is an exemplary performer of this period; her life parallels the troubles and careers of many other performers in this era. By exploring and performing songs that Garland performed during her career, this paper relates the history of American music to the life of the acclaimed Judy Garland. Acknowledgments I would like to thank Dr. Jon Truitt for the guidance, insight, advice, and training he has provided me with throughout this project and these past four years. His help with the many performance endeavors of my collegiate career has been invaluable. I would also like to thank my mom and dad for inspiring a curiosity and interest in music at a young age. Lastly, thank you to Julian for always listening with kind and encouraging ears. Process Analysis Statement Recitals, concerts, and cabarets are important events in a music educator's profession. These are the culmination of unseen efforts rehearsing music, planning logistics, and organizing personnel.

  • Kiss Me, Kate
‘A CHANCE FOR STAGE FOLKS TO SAY “HELLO”: ENTERTAINMENT AND THEATRICALITY IN KISS ME, KATE HANNAH MARIE ROBBINS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC This dissertation is submitted to the University of Sheffield for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2017 ABSTRACT As Cole Porter’s most commercially successful Broadway musical, Kiss Me, Kate (1948) has been widely acknowledged as one of several significant works written during ‘the Golden age’ period of American musical theatre history. Through an in-depth examination of the genesis and reception of this musical and discussion of the extant analytical perspectives on the text, this thesis argues that Kiss Me, Kate has remained popular as a result of its underlying celebration of theatricality and of entertainment. Whereas previous scholarship has suggested that Porter and his co-authors, Sam and Bella Spewack, attempted to emulate Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! (1943) by creating their own ‘integrated musical’, this thesis demonstrates how they commented on contemporary culture, on popular art forms, and the sanctity of Shakespeare and opera in deliberately mischievous ways. By mapping the influence of Porter and the Spewacks’ previous work and their deliberate focus on theatricality and diversion in the development of this work, it shows how Kiss Me, Kate forms part of a wider trend in Broadway musicals. As a result, this study calls for a new analytical framework that distinguishes musicals like Kiss Me, Kate from the persistent methodologies that consider works exclusively through the lens of high art aesthetics. By acknowledging Porter and the Spewacks’ reflexive celebration of and commentary on entertainment, it advocates a new position for musical theatre research that will encourage the study of other similar stage and screen texts that incorporate themes from, and react to, the popular cultural sphere to which they belong.

  • Porter, Cole (1891-1964) by Raymond-Jean Frontain
Porter, Cole (1891-1964) by Raymond-Jean Frontain Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Cole Porter in 1942. Library of Congress For more than thirty years, Cole Porter was as well known for the (often scandalously) Prints and Photographs Division. witty and urbane music that he crafted for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, as for being one of the leaders of international cafe society. Because he feared that the music-buying public would not take seriously love songs written by a homosexual, he lived the paradoxical life of an openly closeted gay man. Married to socialite Linda Lee Thomas, one of the most beautiful women of her generation (but variously reported as from eight to fourteen years Porter's senior), he publicly maintained a heterosexual facade while privately indulging in weekend all-male gatherings that included chorus boys, wartime servicemen, and Hollywood bit players, in addition to conducting intense, short-lived love affairs with Ballets Russes designer Boris Kochno, architect Eddy Tauch, dancer-choreographer Nelson Barclift, and actor Robert Bray, among others. Thus, even while giving, as the author of some of the most popular love songs of the day, deeply memorable voice to his culture's romantic longing, Porter was repeatedly forced to obscure his own. Porter's Life Porter was born June 9, 1891, the only child of three to survive infancy. His maternal grandfather was the wealthiest man in Peru, Indiana, which both fostered in Porter a sense of entitlement and guaranteed his financial independence in early adulthood.
