Holmes began his coaching career as the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator at Team MEAC Overall Strk South Carolina State 5-0 7-2 W5 Hampton University from 1992 to 1994. During those three seasons with the Pirates, Hampton Morgan State 4-1 6-3 W3 posted a remarkable record of 31-4-1, winning three consecutive CIAA championships, Hampton 4-1 5-3 L2 making two trips to the NCAA playoffs and capturing the 1994 Black College National Bethune-Cookman 3-2 6-2 W2 Championship. After leaving Hampton, Holmes spent the next four seasons (1994-98) as the Delaware State 3-3 3-5 L2 Florida A&M 2-3 6-3 L1 defensive backs coach at his alma mater West Virginia University. In 1996 the Mountaineers Norfolk State 2-4 3-6 W1 featured the nation’s top-ranked defense that included a No. 5 national ranking against the North Carolina A&T 1-5 3-7 L1 pass. He has also completed coaching internships with the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Howard 0-5 1-7 L4 Jaguars and Boston University. If Alvin B. Wyatt, Sr. isn’t one of the first names that comes to mind when talking about Bethune-Cookman University football on the Division I level, then he is surely making it so with the wins he is collecting and the student-athletes graduating from within his program. "Dick" Richards, owner of the city's new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. Chosen in the eighth round of the 1988 NFL Draft, Wright became the first player from Central Missouri to make an NFL team’s regular-season roster. A two-time first-team All-MIAA selection, he was MIAA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. Wright was also a first-team All-American as a senior and led the team with 119 tackles and 7.5 sacks. Wright is the only Mules’ football player to have his uniform number (79) retired. He also has established a football scholarship in his name at UCM and was a 1994 inductee into the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame.
