Ook in Marseille waar mijn club Olympique ook werd getroffen door het Corona-virus. Ik had met de club een trainingskamp in Portugal en Duitsland als voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen toen er ook bij ons mensen besmet bleken te zijn. Gelukkig bleek snel handelen het juiste effect te hebben en zijn de competitie begonnen met een 2-3 zege bij Brest. De wereld staat op zijn kop en soms lijkt niets meer hetzelfde. Ik ben dankbaar dat mijn gezin en familie nog steeds gezond zijn. Van jong tot oud heeft gelukkig geen last van het virus. Even afkloppen, want het leven is tegenwoordig een dagkoers. Vreemde gewaarwording. Zeker in Frankrijk, waar de regels veel strikter lijken dan in Nederland. Maar laat ik vooral niet klagen en het steeds positief blijven bekijken. En soms in perspectief. Mijn moeder had vanaf de eerste editie van de Kevin Strootman Cup een bijzondere band met Sonja Lagendijk. Ze overleed in juni na een strijd van tien jaar tegen een ge- vreesde ziekt. Opeens is er een leegte. Haar twee zonen hebben opeens geen moeder meer. Hun vrouwen geen schoonmoeder en de kleinkinderen geen oma meer. Bijna on- wezenlijk. Sonja Lagendijk was een keer samen met mijn moeder in Marseille gekomen voor een wedstrijd van Olympique. Lagendijk paste bij mijn moeder. Lekker Rotterdams, geen koude drukte. Groot sporthart, heerlijk mens. Het verlies doet je beseffen hoe kostbaar het is als je iedereen nog om je heen hebt. Als Rotterdamse Sporticonen er in Corona-tijd samen met Sparta er alles aan doet om het toernooi met mijn naam door te laten gaan, voel ik mij nog rijker. Rijkdom die niets met geld heeft te maken. Ik wens iedereen zondag 13 september een fantastische dag Het Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur Rotterdam toe. Voor de Kasteelclub debuteerde de middenvelder op 15 februari 2008 in een met 6-2 verloren uit- wedstrijd tegen Ajax. Strootman viel in het duel in Amsterdam na 57 minuten in voor Edwin van Bueren. Op 14 november van datzelfde jaar werd bekendgemaakt dat de club het contract van de speler uit de meest succesvolle Sparta-lichting met onder andere Jetro Willems, Lerin Duarte, David Mendes da Silva en Eric Falkenburg had verlengd tot medio 2012. Maar Strootman diende het contract op het Kasteel niet uit. FC Utrecht werd zijn nieuwe werkgever na de winterstop van het seizoen 2010-2011. Door zijn snelle ontwikkeling in de Domstad wekte Strootman de belangstelling van PSV. Samen met teamgenoot Dries Mertens werd het duo voor naar schatting 13 miljoen naar de Eindhovense club. Daar tekende hij voor vijf jaar tekende. Maar ook dat contract diende Strootman niet uit. De middenvelder debuteerde op 5 juli 2011 in het shirt van PSV tijdens een oefenwedstrijd uit bij de amateurs van Halsteren. Zijn Eredivisie- debuut voor PSV maakte hij op 7 augustus 2011 tegen AZ. Bijna twee jaar later tekende Strootman een vijfjarig contract bij AS Roma. De Italianen betaalden 17,1 miljoen euro voor de ex-Spartaan, door bonussen zelfs oplopend tot maximaal 20 miljoen euro. De middenvelder maakte op zondag 1 september zijn competitie- debuut voor de Romeinen tegen Hellas Verona. Het sprookje Strootman kreeg echter een zwarte bladzijde toen hij op zondag 9 maart 2014 tijdens een competitieduel uit bij Napoli de voorste kruisband van zijn linkerknie afscheurde. Hierdoor was hij acht maanden uitgeschakeld en miste hij het WK met Oranje in Brazilië. Op zondag 9 november 2014 maakte hij zijn rentree in het eerste elftal van AS Roma. Op 30 januari 2015 ging Strootman opnieuw onder het mes, nadat hij kort daarvoor in het competitieduel tegen Fiorentina een gekneusde knie had op- gelopen. De ingreep was bedoeld om littekenweefsel uit zijn knie te laten halen, dat was ontstaan na zijn operatie aan de voorste kruisband. Hij deed in 2013 met Jong Oranje mee aan het EK onder 21 jaar in Israël. Hij was aanvoerder van het team dat in de halve finale uitgeschakeld door Jong Italië. Strootman debuteerde op 9 februari 2011 in het Nederlands elftal in een vriendschappelijke interland thuis tegen Oostenrijk.     From being a small boy, I have always been a huge fan of both football and professional wrestling and at around the age of 10-years-old, I came across a monthly magazine brought to newsagents from the makers of the world famous Sports Illustrated all about pro wrestling. It was simply named Pro Wrestling Illustrated. It was a publication I regularly read as well as Shoot and Match weekly magazines to feed my football addiction. In 1991, PWI began this new craze that instantly grabbed my attention more than no other magazine had before. They revealed the 'PWI 500'. The 'PWI 500' section in the magazine listed (in rank order) the top 500 professional wrestlers in the world that year. Counting down from 500, this revealed to me many, many talents that I have not discovered as of yet. This was released every year, and still to this day is the best selling edition of the magazine each year. I studied and read and read over and over again that edition in 1991 and I came up with an idea. What if Match or Shoot revealed the top 500 footballers in the world? Thinking back to 1991, I used to love to tune into the 'BBC Radio 1 Top 40' show every Sunday afternoon too... maybe I'm a tad obsessed with countdowns. Anyways, reflecting on the idea, I thought about it each year the 'PWI 500' was released. As years went on, I felt that this would have grown into a hugely successful plan, gaining great recognition with people in the game, possibly gained its own award ceremony on TV with the emergence and exposure SKY Television in the United Kingdom was just beginning to give to the game back then.
