  • Kinship, Class and Thoroughbred Breeding in Newmarket
This page intentionally left blank The Sport of Kings The Sport of Kings is an ethnography of the British racing industry based upon two years of participant observation in Newmarket, the international headquarters of flat racing. Racing in Britain provides a lens through which ideas of class, status, tradition and hierarchy can be examined in an environ- ment which is both superficially familiar and richly exotic. This book explores concepts about ‘nature’ specific to thoroughbred racehorse breeding, and pur- sues the idea that in making statements about animals, we reveal something of ourselves. It explains the action that takes place on racecourses, in training yards, on studs and at bloodstock auctions. It analyses the consumption of racing through betting on the racecourse and in betting shops, and it proffers an insightful description of a unique class system: that of the humans and animals involved in the production of British flat racing. rebecca cassidy is Lecturer in Anthropology at Goldsmiths College, University of London. TUESDAY, 18 MAY 2021 THE WEEKLY WRAP: COMING OF AGE JOE MERCER DIES AT 86 By Emma Berry In February, the inevitable announcement came that Pivotal (GB) was to be pensioned at Cheveley Park Stud at the age of 28. David and Patricia Thompson's homebred son of Polar Falcon has been one of the great British breeding stories of the last few decades and the sturdy chestnut has been a great friend to small and major breeders alike through his magnificent stud innings. As he continues his retirement, so does his legacy gain momentum. A few months before Pivotal was retired, his son Siyouni (Fr) had been crowned champion sire in his native France for the first time. The Aga Khan Studs stallion had only missed out on earning that title in the two previous seasons to Galileo (Ire) and Nathaniel (Ire), respectively the sires of the high-earning Arc winners Waldgeist (GB) and Enable (GB) in Joe Mercer at Ascot in 2017 | Getty Images those two years. • Media Guide Welcome to Royal Ascot from Her Majesty’S Representative
MEDIA GUIDE WELCOME TO ROYAL ASCOT FROM HER MAJESTY’S REPRESENTATIVE May I wish a warm welcome to the world’s media in this very special Diamond Jubilee year. Her Majesty The Queen has owned no fewer than 63 Ascot winners, 20 of them at the Royal Meeting, and it’s always a great thrill for everyone when the Royal colours are successful. It would be marvellous for that to happen this year. We recall the perfect timing in Silver Jubilee year when dual Classic-winning Dunfermline provided tremendous success for The Queen. As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we are staging a very special exhibition titled “60 years of Royal Ascot during the Reign of Her Majesty The Queen.” Situated beside the pre-parade ring, this is a photographic commemoration of the Royal Family at Ascot over the past 60 years. Central to the Royal Meeting is the fact that, on the track, we have the finest programme of races anywhere in the world. We have increased our prize money this year by £715,000 and now offer £4.5 million across the 30 races of the five-day meeting. None of the races are worth less than £55,000. Two of our races offer prize money of £500,000 each. We have renamed The Golden Jubilee Stakes. From this year it is The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and with prize money of £500,000 it is Britain’s most valuable sprint race. Royal Ascot’s two legs of the Global Sprint Challenge, The King’s Stand Stakes on Tuesday and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, will again feature a truly cosmopolitan field of runners.

Thornton Linda Rice had her training license immediately revoked for a period of "no less than three years" and was fined $50,000 May 17 when New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) members voted 5-0 to agree with a hearing officer that Rice's years-long pattern of seeking and obtaining confidential pre-entry information from New York Racing Association (NYRA) racing office workers was "intentional, serious and extensive, and that her actions constituted improper and corrupt conductY inconsistent with and detrimental to the best interests of horse racing."
