This year’s Balloons over Wai- kato will feature the Hamilton Birthday Balloon to help the city celebrate its 150th birthday. The birthday cake balloon was made in Oswestry, England. The cake has 16 pink candles, 9506789AA the biggest measuring 6.5m high. It will be the first time this birthday cake balloon has visited New Zealand. Margaret Knight’s many years of service and commitment to the New Zealand National Party was rewarded with a Certificate of Appreciation, presented to her at the end of last year by Prime Minister John Key. The presentation took place at a National Party luncheon in Ohaupo attended by 150 people. Mrs Knight joined the party officially in 1993 and went straight onto the committee for Te Awa- mutu Branch. She was elected secretary ‘‘about 10 years ago’’ — a position which she still holds. She had been a supporter of the party for many years prior to that direct involvement. ‘‘My father and family were strong National Party supporters and I have long admired the calibre of person involved in the party,’’ Mrs Knight says. By BALA TIKKISETTY

As we begin another new year, with its inevitable challenges, it’s always good to remember that whatever the season, maintaining the condition of soils is a key to successful sustainable farming. So I’m pleased to report that a strong tool for helping farmers do just that — the visual soil assessment or VSA — has been updated with some important new indicators. Understanding VSA and what it can tell us is a very good investment for farmers. A decline in soil physical properties can take considerable expense and many years to correct, and can increase the risk of soil erosion by water or wind. VSA’s results are easy to interpret and create a better understanding of soil quality and its fundamental importance to sustainable resource and environmental management. The updated VSA adds to that by improving assessments of soil condition SUNDAY and plant performance.
