  • Media Release - Tall Ferns Off to China Tuesday 14 June, 2011
Media Release - Tall Ferns off to China Tuesday 14 June, 2011 There is an experienced look to the Tall Ferns basketball team confirmed for this week’s tournament in China, after extensive trials over the past five days at the Breakers training base in Auckland. Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe, Natalie Taylor (nee Purcell), Micaela Cocks and Lisa Wallbutton have been selected as well as the talented Jillian Harmon who was a highly rated player in the American College system and is now playing in Italy. There are four other players are in the US collegiate system – Erin Rooney at Fordham University in New York, Rebecca Dew in Hawaii, Jordan Hunter in Missouri and Jelena Vucinic (daughter of Tall Blacks coach, Nenad Vucinic) at Louisiana Tech who is also the youngest player in the team at 19-years-old. The one New Zealand-based squad member is Waikato Wizards forward Aroha Jennings. Guard Angela Marino and Jess McCormack were unavailable for selection while Otago guard Suzie Bates is currently on tour with the New Zealand women's cricket team. Coach Kennedy Hamilton-Kereama says there is a group of players who provide plenty of experience for the team for what is an exciting year. “There’s a core group of Olympic players and also some players we want to bring through as well. It was good to have a large number of players trialling for this tour. Micaela (Cocks), Kate (McMeeken-Ruscoe), Natalie (Taylor), Lisa (Wallbutton) and Jillian (Harmon) have all got that core experience and talent. In fact every player in the squad has been in the Tall Ferns before, so it won’t be a shock to them.

Iain spent the last few months of the year familiarising himself with the basketball community and establishing several priority projects for attention in 2013. Interim chief executive Murray Strong completed his duties with BBNZ at around the same time. The board wishes to record its gratitude for the work Murray undertook while the search for a permanent chief executive was underway. 2012 was a year of change for Basketball New Zealand, as we consulted on the recommendations of the All of Basketball Plan and then began implementing them. The new tournament calendar was a good example of that work. “Business as usual” was still a big focus, with the national tournaments all providing fantastic examples of what is great about basketball – passion, fun, excitement, family, friends, competition and camaraderie. A highlight was the FIBA Oceania U19 Championship for Men and Women, hosted by Porirua in September.

Certainly, there were numerous challenges, but these always create opportunities and, importantly, there were many significant positives, including the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men and the Tall Blacks’ victory over the Australian Boomers to win the Al Ramsay Shield. Financially, there remained the on-going issues of funding the development of the game, from the grassroots to our Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns, as well as a national sporting organisation. The combination of the investment necessary to hold the FIBA U19 men’s tournament, support the extended buildup for the Junior Tall Blacks, and continue the Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns international programmes have depleted the financial resources of BBNZ this year. It was particularly challenging to access sufficient sponsorship and funding during one of the more difficult recessions New Zealand has experienced for some years.
