He likes playing around in his own front yard

Ohsweken's Glenn Styres regained the Championship Crown at the track he owns again in 2014 The victory ended a six year drought since he claimed three straight titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

GLENN STYRES RETURNS TO THE TOP AT OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY

There is little doubt he knows the fast way around his own front yard.

That front yard is also his playground for one on the most exciting forms of motorsports -Sprint Car racing.

In 1994 Glenn Styres built the 3/8 mile oval Ohsweken Speedway on 80 acres of Styres family-owned land on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Reserve southeast of Brantford, Ontario.

In the ensuing years Glenn's 3/8 mile clay oval has become one of the premier race tracks for Sprint Car racing in North America thanks to his dedication and desire to be the best.

For Styres though, it isn't just a race track that he promotes.

He's also one of the most competitive drivers at the oval and in 2014 Glenn captured his fourth championship in the Corr/Pak titled 360 Sprint Car Division - his first return to the champion's role since winning three straight titles from 2005 through 2007 (the track's first three seasons of featuring 360 Sprint cars as its main weekly attraction).

Styres opened the 2014 season with his 20th career win at Ohsweken then recorded two more in the next seven races on the schedule.

His second win came on June 13th when he outdueled Quebec's Steve Poirier in a record setting time over the 20-lap distance. It was also the start of a four-race run of top-5 finishes including his third A-Main win on June 27th.

That streak through July 11th elevated Glenn to the top of the Corr/Pak Merchandising standings with some breathing room ahead of his closest pursuers.

With seven top-10 finishes, including four in the top-5, through the final half of the schedule Styres was in charge of his own destiny.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in that seven race stretch came in the Corr/Pak versus Empire Super Sprints challenge on August 8th when the Ohsweken Flyer had to take a provisional starting spot in the 24-car field.

For the first time in the season Glenn had a DNF in his qualifier and finished fifth in the B-Main - a race that only took the top-4 finishers for the feature. Fortunately because of his top spot atop the Corr/Pak standings he was given the customary provisional 22nd starting spot in the field and worked his way up to seventh place in the 25-lap special.

As the season headed into its final two weeks of the regular season what once appeared to be a comfortable lead for Styres atop the standings shrunk to just 27 points when Mitch Brown captured his second win of the season on August 29th to set up what was developing into a possible showdown for the championship on September 5th.

To the disappointment of both drivers that showdown never materialized as Mother Nature forced cancellation of the event and cemented a successful ending to Glenn Styres' fourth championship season.

MITCH BROWN of Brantford, ON was once again in hunt for the Corr/Pak Merchandising Championship at Ohsweken Speedway but fell just short of his goal to end atop the points standings.

The fifth-year Sprint Car competitor started the season with five top-five feature finishes in the first eight events of the season. But on July 11th a chunk of mud, shattered part of his car's nose panel leaving debris on the track. That incident brought out the caution flag forcing the youngster to restart at the back of the field. Despite a strong drive in the closing laps he finished 13th in the 20-lap event.

Through the remaining events on the schedule he finished with seven top-ten runs including A-Main wins on July 18th and August 29th to move within 27points of Styres heading into Championship Night at Ohsweken.

But that showdown for the title never came about as heavy rain halted the night's action before the Sprint Cars could get on track for the final 2014 points' night.

Mitch's two feature wins were the fourth and fifth of his career at Ohsweken and moved him into a four-way tie for fifth place in the track's list of all-time Sprint Car winners.

He'll be back in 2014 shooting for his first JIM HUPPUNEN of Welland, ON - Ohsweken's 2011 championship. and 2013 Corr/Pak Merchandising 360 Sprint Car

Champion - was once again in the chase to the title.

He started the season with four top-10 runs through the first four scheduled events and compiled five more top-10 finishes (three in the top-five) through

July 25th. After a 16th place run in the Northern Summer Nationals on July 28th, the "Red Rocket" posted four more top-10s to close out the season.

But for the first time in the past four seasons, Jim failed to win an A-Main at Ohsweken and fell short of

his goal for a third track championship.

Jim also had to battle his way to a starting spot in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Feature, the 10th annual edition of Ohsweken Speedway’s signature event.

With a fifth-place finish in his heat he had to face the challenge of finishing high in the each of the ensuing qualifiers to reach the 30-car, 35-lap event making the starting field in the 28th-place spot and finishing 20th - a show of the determination that demonstrates why

he has already won two championships in his six years behind the wheel of a Sprint Car.

IN THE RUNNING

Once again there were a number of drivers who put together some impressive performances in the 360

Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car events at Ohsweken.

Rounding out the top-10 in the final standings were -

SHANE ROSS of Thedford, ON who moved up one spot to 4th in the standings. The third year competitor put together nine top-10 finishes (2 in the top-five) including a disap- pointing loss on the final lap to Mitch

Brown on July 18th. 4th-Place SHANE ROSS -Thedford, ON

TODD HODDICK of Cheektowaga, NY was back in the chase again with 4 top-five finishes among his nine top- ten runs. His four finishes of 15th or higher marred an otherwise exciting season.

KEITH DEMPSTER of Alton, ON was once again in the chase with the veteran campaigner racking up seven top-tens. Unfortunately, he was hampered in his pursuit of the title by four 20th-place or higher finishes.

DAVE DYKSTRA of Port Colborne, ON 5th-Place TODD HODDICK - Cheektowaga, NY 6th-Place KEITH DEMPSTER- Alton, ON rebounded from a disastrous 2013 season with 8 top-tens (including two in the top-five). He can do better and he'll be out to prove it in 2015.

JAMIE TURNER of Caistor Centre, ON moved into the top-ten in 2014 after finishing 11th in 2013. It was his best showing in the seasonal points since his ninth-place standing in 2010- the year he was

"Rookie of the Year" in the 360

Sprints.

CORY TURNER of Caistor Centre, ON may have had only two top-10 finishes in his rookie season but demonstrated enough poise to finish tenth in the standings. Certainly deserving of the "Rookie of The Year" award -just like his dad Jamie earned in 2010.

It will be interesting to see how many of the drivers on next page will move 9th-Place JEREMY HUGHES - Hamilton, ON 10th-Place CORY TURNER - Caistor Centre, ON up to the top-10 in 2015.

Ryan Hunsinger is the first Champion of Ohsweken Speedway's Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars.

The former 360 Sprint Car competitor returned to the track where he started his open-wheel career back in 1996 and earned 5 feature wins en route to the 2014 Championship.

The first of his regular season wins came on opening night, May 23rd and he returned to the winner's lane on June 13th, July

11th and August 8th keeping his primary challengers Aaron Turkey and Jake Brown at bay for most of the season.

In an interview with Spencer Lewis of Inside Track News, Hunsinger expressed his gratitude to Miles Hill for bringing him back to compete at Ohsweken in 2014.

When asked about his future plans he simply responded by saying "I'm not exactly sure of my schedule yet, but I know I'll be back racing with Hills Racing. This crew is amazing. They put me in a great car every week and I absolutely appreciate everything they do for me. This crew takes a lot of time out of their personal schedule to make this happen. I get all the glory – but at the end of the day none of this happens without the people behind the scenes."

"The Gunslinger” as he was tabbed in his early racing days grew up in a racing family. His grandfather Bob Slack owned and promoted Cayuga Speedway in Nelles Corners, Ontario during the glory days of that storied asphalt oval. Ryan was part of the very first race day at Ohsweken Speedway on June 16, 1996, and RYAN HUNSINGER has visited victory lane there on numerous occasions. 2014 602 CRATE SPRINTS CHAMPION

If Glenn Styres was ever asked what his year was like in 2014 he'd probably respond by saying, "Very Busy. I spent the whole summer running around in circles."

As track owner and promoter of Ohsweken Speedway he's often the face of the popular 3/8th-mile oval and in 2014 became the track's only four-time champion since adding 360 Sprint cars to its annual racing programs in 2005.

In 2014 he also became a five-time Champion of the Southern Ontario Sprints when he raced his white and bright orange #0 sprinter to the title for the first time since 2010. His other titles came in 2003, 2007 and 2008.

As with many championships, consistency played a significant role in a driver's success and such was the case with Styres in the 2014 11-race SOS schedule.

His first of two wins came at South Buxton Raceway where he'd never won before. The veteran competitor finally conquered the 3/8th-mile oval on July 5th after starting third in the feature, and passed Adam West for the second spot on lap 5. He was chasing down leader Justin Martin when a yellow flag came out on lap 12, and took the lead 4 laps after the restart.

"Tonight, Steve (Moulton) had it set up right, the car was sweet to drive,” Glenn told South Buxton Raceway publicist Mike Bennett after the race. “I’m used to running on the outside, it was pretty sticky up there, but I’ll tell you, the car was pretty good everywhere.”

The win gave Styres a slim 4 point margin over Brantford's Mitch Brown at the top of the Southern Ontario Sprints standings, while teammate Keith Dempster moved to 5th spot - a picture of what would later play out in the eventual run to the championship. It was also Glenn's fifth top-5 finish through the series' first six events of 2014 schedule.

On July 12th, Styres chased Mitch Brown to the Brantford youngster's third checkered flag of the season at Brighton Speedway and a week later he was third to cross the finish line back at South Buxton in a race won by local favourite Kyle Patrick of Tilbury.

The tide in the chase to SOS championship between Brown and Styres turned in favour of the "Ohsweken Flyer" on August 9th at Brighton Speedway when the Brantford youngster hit a tire marker on lap 12 while leading the 25-lap feature damaging his racer and finishing his night.

The faux pas handed the victory to Styres- his second of the SOS season and a sizable lead in the points race.

Despite two determined second-place runs by Brown in the season ending double-header at Brighton at the end of August, Styres maintained his lead atop the standings with a 3rd and 6th place finishes enough for a 48 point margin of victory.

2nd Place #10 MITCH BROWN -Brantford, ON Despite his record of 3 feature wins and six other top-5 finishes in the 11 race series it wasn't enough for Mitch

Brown to catch Glenn Styres in the championship battle.

A 13th-place run at the unfamiliar Humberstone Speedway on May 18th and a devastating DNF at Brighton Speedway on August 9th shattered his hopes of catching the Ohsweken Speedster.

With the added experience he gained in his fifth-year of racing Sprint Cars on the smaller ovals (compared to his home track of Ohsweken Speedway) he'll be seeking to better that record in 2015.

3rd Place #5 KEITH DEMPSTER -Alton, ON With his third-place finish in the final standings, Keith Dempster found himself standing on the Southern Ontario Sprints podium for the seventh time since joining the series fourteen years ago.

In 2014 Dempster left it until the last race of the season to win a feature race but earned his place on the podium with four other top-five runs and two additional top-tens.

The former Can-Am Midget legend and all-time feature wins leader left the paved ovals behind in 2000 and won his first of two SOS championship that very year.

His second championship came in 2002.

A victory in memory of Harold Brown One day after grandfather's funeral, Mitch Brown wins at Ohsweken Speedway -By Sean Allen -Brant News

Mitch Brown still had a heavy heart on Friday when he strapped into his sprint car at Ohsweken Speedway.

Harold Brown – Mitch's grandfather – died last Sunday. His funeral was last Thursday, just 24 hours before the race.

Harold was a lifelong racing fanatic, having made a name for himself at the track in the 1960s and 1970s. He passed along the passion to his son Doug, as well as grandsons Mitch and Jake.

"All my life, he'd do anything to be at the race track with us," Mitch Brown said. "It was going through my head that this was the first time he wasn't there…wasn't here with us."

It was only fitting that Mitch would make a dramatic pass of the leader on the second-last lap to claim his first Corr/Pak Merchandising 360 Sprint Cars victory of the season in Ohsweken.

He said the victory in the feature race was cathartic for the whole family.

"The last four weeks have been really tough on everybody," Mitch said. "I think everyone in my family was there at the track on Friday to unwind and relax a little. It was great to win with everybody close to us there."

Mitch came third in his qualifying heat to squeeze into the finale race.

Trailing eventual runner-up Shane Ross for most of the finale, it looked like Mitch was destined for second place with five laps to go in the 20-lap feature when a caution came out.

"There was a lapped car between us and I thought that was it," he said. "But I knew if I could get by the lapped car quickly after the caution, I still had a shot."

That's exactly what happened. Mitch moved back into position behind Ross, then took the lead on the second turn of Lap 18 to earn the checkered flag.

During Mitch's victory speech, there were some moist eyes in the crowd at Ohsweken Speedway.

"The only reason I'm here is because of that man," he told the crowd. "I loved him and I know all you did, too. We thank you for all the support."

The victory moved Mitch into second place in the Corr/Pak Merchandising 360 Sprint Cars standings at Ohsweken Speedway – just 26 points behind leader Glenn Styres.

Mitch has also been quite successful on other tracks this season, picking up three wins already at Brighton Speedway to lead the Southern Ontario Sprints.

"We've been doing really well," he said. "We are right out in front with a lot of guys who've been doing this way longer than I have, so it's nice to keep getting that experience that will keep me there with them." Doug Brown Harold Brown Nick Christensen Jamie Howe Ken Spencer Mitch's brother Jake finished fifth place at the track last Friday in the Strickland's GMC Crate Sprint Cars division – the feeder division for the 360 sprints.

Harold's last personal attendance at Ohsweken Speedway was on June 6, when Jake won his first race.
