Ticket Information: 604-941-5401 www.terryfoxtheatre.ca Choreographer Director Musical Director Sarah Van Os Dan Tilsley Darren Burkett Produced for the Broadway Stage by Michael Butler Originally Produced by the New York Shakespeare Festival Theatre Director’s Notes Acknowledgements Dan Tilsley - Director Stage Crew It is hard to imagine that 40 years have Tyler Arseneault Stephanie Mayze Kaitlyn Sutherland passed since James Rado and Gerome Ragni, Chad Roots Darren Spencer Eric Reich two unemployed actors, hit upon the idea of Richard Lambert Stephanie Lambert Tamara Finnegan bringing to the stage the real-life theatrical excitement they were witnessing around them in the East Village of New York. First staged off broadway at the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1967, HAIR reflects the experimental times it was born in. Of course the show became a huge hit, soon moving to Broadway and stages around the world and spawning numerous hit songs. Says Tom O’Horgan, who directed the Broadway Version, “Once in a lifetime, expresses a point in time - a theatre form whose demeanor, language, music, clothing, dance and even its name accurately describe a social epoch in full explosion.” It is ironic that such an avant-garde work is now something akin to “golden oldie” nostalgia. The world has changed, or has it? An unpopular war, a president (now ex-president) at odds with the country, and a public outcry against losing the lives of soldiers, still rings true today to a new generation of young people. Its is true that many “flower children” are now grandparents and that HAIR has lost some of its edge. So why do the play? Certainly not for Canadian content. Those who look to find fault with the play, either for its artistic weakness or its politically incorrect subject matter, will not have to look far. I love this play despite its many shortcomings and I believe that all of the young men and women performing tonight have The Terry Fox Theatre department would like to thank the come to love it as well. I believe that young people have changed following people for their help and support very little over the years.
