Holden Environmental Scientist I Barbara Goetting Environmental Specialist I Thomas Dix Environmental Scientist II MARCH 2003 1 Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County Richard Garrity, Ph.D. Executive Director Gerold Morrison, Ph.D. Director, Environmental Resources Management Division 2 INTRODUCTION The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) has been collecting samples in Middle Tampa Bay 1993 as part of the bay-wide benthic monitoring program developed to (Tampa Bay National Estuary Program 1996). The original objectives of this program were to discern the ―health‖—or ―status‖-- of the bay’s sediments by developing a Benthic Index for Tampa Bay as well as evaluating sediment quality by means of Sediment Quality Assessment Guidelines (SQAGs). The Tampa Bay Estuary Program provided partial support for this monitoring. This report summarizes data collected during 1993-1998 from the Middle Tampa Bay segment of Tampa Bay. 3 METHODS Field Collection and Laboratory Procedures: A total of 127 stations (20 to 24 per year) were sampled during late summer/early fall ―Index Period‖ 1993-1998 (Appendix A). Sample locations were randomly selected from computer- generated coordinates. Benthic samples were collected using a Young grab sampler following the field protocols outlined in Courtney et al. (1993). Laboratory procedures followed the protocols set forth in Courtney et al. (1995). Data Analysis: Species richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and Evenness were calculated using PISCES Conservation Ltd.’s (2001) ―Species Diversity and Richness II‖ software. -

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract The taxonomic status of the monotypic genus Scleroplax Rathbun, 1893, is evaluated and separated from other genera of the Pinnixa White, 1846, complex. Distinguishing characters of Scleroplax are a hard, subheptagonal and dorsally, highly convex carapace, and a third maxilliped with a propodus that extends to the end of the dactylus. The genera Scleroplax, Pinnixa, Austinixa Heard & Manning, 1997, Glassella Campos & Wicksten, 1997, Indopinnixa Manning & Morton, 1987, and Tetrias Rathbun, 1898, share a carapace than is wider than long and a distinct lateral exopod lobe on the third maxilliped, all of which may represent monophyletic characters. Updated information on the distribution and hosts of S. granulata Rathbun, 1893, indicate that the species now ranges from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada to El Coyote estuary, Punta Abreojos, Baja California Sur, México. It inhabits burrows of the echiuroid Urechis caupo Fisher & MacGinitie, 1928, and the mud shrimps Neotrypaea californiensis (Dana, 1854), N. gigas (Dana, 1852) (new host record), Upogebia pugettensis (Dana, 1852), and occasionally U. macginiteorum Williams, 1986 (new host record). All four zoeal stages, the megalopa and the first crab stage are described and illustrated. The morphological characteristics of the larvae of P. fasciatum are compared with those of other known larvae of the genera Perisesarma and Parasesarma. The larval morphology of P. fasciatum clearly presents the typical combination of features that characterize sesarmid larvae. Overall, larval stages are very similar in Perisesarma and Parasesarma and it is impossible to distinguish these two genera by larval morphology. INTRODUCTION still being revised -

It includes 488 named species in 90 families, with 153 (31%) of the species considered endemic. References to New Zealand records and other significant references are given for all species previously recorded from New Zealand. The location of New Zealand material is given for a number of species first recorded in the New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity but with no further data. Information on geographical distribution, habitat range and, in some cases, depth range and colour are given for each species.
