Many have challenged the GLI’s stature, but none has matched its continued success. The 2019 competition will be the 55th annual edition of the tournament. It will be played at Little Caesars Ice Arena in Detroit, with Ferris State joining Michigan Tech, Michigan, and Michigan State. The tournament was born out of a conversation between then-general manager of Olym- pia Stadium Lincoln Cavalieri, Michigan Tech’s legendary coach John J. MacInnes, and Detroit Red Wings scout Jack Paterson. The three men were discussing the lack of American-born players in the National Hockey League and concluded that a prestigious collegiate tournament could make a differ- ence by promoting interest in hockey among young athletes in the general public. American Airlines vice president Jack Tompkins, a former University of Michigan goalie and member of the Detroit Red Wings organization, shared their vision as well, and together in 1965, they founded the Great Lakes Invitational hockey tournament. The GLI has grown into one of the premier college and holiday sporting events in the coun- try, originating at Detroit’s Olympia Stadium. Michigan Tech, the host for the tournament since its inception, added Michigan as a co-host in 1976 and moved into its then home, the Joe Louis Arena, in 1979. Starting in 2017, the GLI is hosted at the Little Caesars Ice Arena. As for attendance, the GLI is unmatched among college hockey holiday tournaments. In 1999, the GLI went over the one-mil- lion mark in total attendance. Little Caesars Arena Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan serves as the home of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons and countless other sports, entertainment and community events. Little Caesars Arena also features state-of-the-art technology, fan amenities and active community spaces like the Via, the BELFOR Training Center and the Chevrolet Plaza. The Arena opened on September 5th, 2017. The building sits 19,515 spectators for hockey and 20,491 for basketball. In June 2018, the arena was named “Sports Facility of the Year” at the 2018 Sports Business Awards. 2019-20 Michigan Tech Huskies Number Name Birthyear Birthplace Height Weight Hand #2 Seamus Donohue (D) 1996 North Oaks, MN, USA 6’0” 185 L #3 Tyrell Buckley (D) 1997 Penticton, BC, CAN 6’0” 194 L #4 Andrew Bellant (F) 1997 Linden, MI, USA 5’11” 185 R #6 Cooper Watson (D) 1996 Appleton, WI, USA 6’3” 194 L #7 Keegan Ford (D) 1996 Waunakee, WI, USA 5’9” 181 L #8 Dylan Steman (C) “C” 1994 Maple Grove, MN, USA 5’11” 190 L #9 Thomas Parrottino (F) 1998 Rochester Hills, MI, USA 5’11” 170 L #10 Jacob Jackson (LW/C) “A” 1994 Maplewood, MN, USA 6’0” 190 L #11 Zach Noble (F) 1998 Toms River, NJ, USA 6’2” 185 R #12 Brian Halonen (F) 1999 Delano, MN, USA 6’0” 205 R #13 Thomas Beretta (C) 1995 Palmerston, ON, CAN 6’1” 209 R #14 Gavin Gould (F) 1996 North Vancouver, BC, CAN 5’8” 159 L #15 Jake Lucchini (LW) “C” 1995 Trail, BC, CAN 5’11” 183 L #16 T.J.
