One of the most striking features of predators is how often they cause evolutionary diversification in natural systems. Here, we review several ways that this can occur, exploring empirical evidence and suggesting promising areas for future work. We also introduce several papers recently accepted in Diversity that demonstrate just how important and varied predation can be as an agent of natural selection. We conclude that there is still much to be done in this field, especially in areas where multiple predator species prey upon common prey, in certain taxonomic groups where we still know very little, and in an overall effort to actually quantify mortality rates and the strength of natural selection in the wild. Introduction In the history of life, a key evolutionary innovation was the ability of some organisms to acquire energy and nutrients by killing and consuming other organisms [1–3]. This phenomenon of predation has evolved independently, multiple times across all known major lineages of life, both extinct and extant [1,2,4]. Quite simply, predators are ubiquitous agents of natural selection. Not surprisingly, prey species have evolved a variety of traits to avoid predation, including traits to avoid detection [4–6], to escape from predators [4,7], to withstand harm from attack [4], to deter predators [4,8], and to confuse or deceive predators [4,8]. -

Prey preferences and feeding-related behaviour of a Central European species of Scydmaeninae, Scydmaenus rufus, were studied under laboratory conditions. Results of prey choice experiments involving 22 identified species of mites belonging to 13 families of Oribatida and two families of Mesostigmata (Uropodina) demonstrated that this beetle feeds mostly on oribatid Schelorib atidae (60.38% of prey) and Oppiidae (29.75%) and only occasionally on uropodine Urodinychidae (4.42%) and oribatid Mycobatidae (3.39%); species belonging to Trematuridae (Uropodina), Ceratozetidae and Tectocepheidae (Oribatida) were consumed occasionally. The number of mites consumed per beetle per day was 1.42, and when Oppia nitens was the prey, the entire feeding process took 2.93–5.58 h. Observations revealed that mechanisms for overcoming the prey’s defences depended on the body form of the mite. When attacking oribatids, with long and spiny legs, the beetles cut off one or two legs before killing the mite by inserting one mandible into its gnathosomal opening. -
Case Report: Dermanyssus Gallinae in a Patient with Pruritus and Skin Lesions

During her physical examination, puritic dermatitis lesions were found on the patient's shoulders, neck and arms in particular, and systemic examination and labaratory tests were found to be normal. The patient's story showed that similar signs had been seen in other members of the household. They reside on the top floor of a building and pigeons are occasionally seen in the ventilation shaft. Examination of the house was made. The walls of the house, door architraves and finally beds, sheets and blankets and the windows opening to the outside were examined. During the examination, arthropoda smaller than 1 mm were detected. Following preparation of the collected samples, these were found to be Dermanyssus gallinae. Together with this presentation of this event, it is believed cutaneus reactions stemming from birds could be missed and that whether or not of pets or wild birds exist in or around the homes should be investigated. ABSTRACT: Ornithonyssus sylviarum is a hematophagous mite present in wild, domestic, and synanthropic birds. However, this mite can affect several vertebrate hosts, including humans, leading to dermatitis, pruritus, allergic reactions, and papular skin lesions. This study evaluated the epidemiological characteristics of O. sylviarum attacks on poultry workers, including data on laying hens, infrastructure and management of hen houses, and reports of attacks by hematophagous mites. In addition, a case of mite attack on a farm worker on a laying farm in the Midwest region in Minas Gerais is presented. It was found that 60.7% farm workers reported attacks by hematophagous mites. Correspondence analysis showed an association between reports of mite attacks in humans with (1) presence of O. sylviarum in the hen house, (2) manual removal of manure by employees, and (3) history of acaricide use. -

The corpse was found in a mixed deciduous forest of Biscay (northern Spain). Soil fauna was extracted by sieving the soil where the corpse lay and placing the remains in Berlese–Tullgren funnels. Necrophagous fauna on the human remains was dominated by the fly Piophilidae: Stearibia nigriceps (Meigen, 1826), mites Ascidae: Proctolaelaps epuraeae (Hirschmann, 1963), Laelapidae: Hypoaspis (Gaeolaelaps) aculeifer (Canestrini, 1884), and the beetle Cleridae: Necrobia rufipes (de Geer, 1775). We confirm the importance of edaphic fauna, especially if the deceased is discovered in natural environs. Related fauna may remain for days after corpse removal and reveal infor- mation related to the circumstances of death. Pseudoscorpions (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones) from Leaf Litter of the Slovak Karst National Park

A total of 667 specimens of pseudoscorpions, belonging to 15 species and four families were collected during 2014. Samples were taken from leaf litter at five localities in the Western Carpathians in the Slovak Karst National Park, Slovakia. The most abundant fa- milies were Neobisiidae (381 specimens) and Chthoniidae (275 specimens). Furthermore ten chernetid specimens and a single cheliferid deutonymph were recorded. Four of the 15 pseudoscorpion species were recorded in the Slovak Karst for the first time. Keywords: Carpathians, distribution, faunistics, Slovakia Zusammenfassung. Pseudoskorpione (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones) aus Laubstreu im Nationalpark Slowakischer Karst. Im Jahr 2014 wurden insgesamt 667 Pseudoskorpione aus 15 Arten und vier Familien gesammelt. Die Proben wurden in fünf verschiedenen Gebieten im Nationalpark Slowakischer Karst (Westkarpaten, Slowakei) genommen. Am häufigsten waren die Familien Neobisiidae (381 Exemplare) und Chthoniidae (275 Exemplare) vertreten. Weiterhin wurden zehn Exemplaren der Chernetidae und nur eine Deutonym- phe einer Cheliferidae erfasst. Vier der 15 Pseudoskorpionarten wurden erstmals im slowakischen Karst nachgewiesen. E-mail: [email protected] The thermal requirements for development of Dermanyssus gallinae were studied under laboratory conditions at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C, a 12h photoperiod and 60-85% RH. The thermal requirements for D. gallinae were as follows. Preoviposition: base temperature 3.4oC, thermal constant (k) 562.85 degree-hours, determination coefficient (R2) 0.59, regression equation: Y= -0.006035 + 0.001777 x. Egg: base temperature 10.60oC, thermal constant (k) 689.65 degree-hours, determination coefficient (R2) 0.94, regression equation: Y= -0.015367 + 0.001450 x. Larva: base temperature 9.82oC, thermal constant (k) 464.91 degree-hours, determination coefficient R2 0.87, regression equation: Y= -0.021123+0.002151 x. Protonymph: base temperature 10.17oC, thermal constant (k) 504.49 degree- hours, determination coefficient (R2) 0.90, regression equation: Y= -0.020152 + 0.001982 x. Deutonymph: base temperature 11.80oC, thermal constant (k) 501.11 degree-hours, determination coefficient (R2) 0.99, regression equation: Y= -0.023555 + 0.001996 x. The results obtained showed that 15 to 42 generations of Dermanyssus gallinae may occur during the year in the State of São Paulo, as estimated based on isotherm charts.
