Análise cladística de Incini Burmeister, 1842 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae). Incini Burmeister, 1842 é uma tribo neotropical de Scarabaeidae composta por cinco gêneros: Archedinus Morón & Krikken, 1990 (1), Coelocratus Burmeister & Schaum, 1841, Golinca Thomson, 1878 (1), Inca LePeletier & Serville, 1828 (7) e Pantodinus, Burmeister 1847 (1). Três espécies são sinonimizadas no gênero Golinca: G. davisii (Waterhouse, 1877), G. ishiha- rai Nagai, 1994 e G. trevisani Valois & Silva, 2015 são sinônimos novos de G. bifrons (Oli- vier, 1789), espécie tipo do gênero. No gênero Inca, duas mudanças de status são propostas para táxons incluídos anteriormente em Inca clathratus LePeletier & Serville, 1828, espécie tipo do gênero: I. sommeri Westwood, 1844, considerada sub-espécie, é reestabelecida ao nível de espécie, como descrito originalmente, e I. quesneli Boos & Ratcliffe, 1985 stat. nov. considerada subespécie é elevada ao nível de espécie. Uma nova espécie de Inca com ocor- rência no Sul do Brasil está em processo de descrição e publicação, I. axeli sp. nov., que mesmo não sendo descrita no presente trabalho, é utilizada na filogenia por motivos práticos. A ánalise cladística de Incini foi realizada, recuperando o monofilia da tribo que é sustentada por 28 sinapomorfias sendo 11 delas homoplásticas e 17 exclusivas. A análise contou com 18 terminais (quinze no grupo interno e 3 do grupo externo) e 187 caracteres morfológicos. A busca exaustiva com pesagem igualitária de caracteres (EW) resultou em uma árvore mais parcimoniosa com 392 passos, IC= 54 e IR= 68. A topologia resultante recuperou Osmoder- ma eremita Scopoli, 1763 (Osmodermatini) como grupo-irmão de Incini, sustentado por 25 sinapomorfias, sendo 6 delas homoplásticas. O gênero Inca é monofilético e suportado por 22 sinapomorfias, sendo 7 delas homoplásticas. São disponibilizados mapas com a distribuição geográfica e novos registros de ocorrência das espécies da tribo, sendo importante salientar que I. quesneli teve seu registro de ocorrências ampliado, anteriormente considerado endêmi- co da ilha de Trindade (República de Trindade e Tobago), e agora resgistrada para a costa Nordeste do Brasil. Além do estudo morfológico geral, foi realizado uma comparação minu- ciosa entre os chifres clipeais de Inca e Golinca, resultando em nova terminologia usada para definir as áreas dos chifres laterais e inferir e a homologia dessas áreas entre as espécies. This paper reports the collecting of adult beetles and third-instar larvae of Coelocorynus desfontainei Antoine, 1999 in Cameroon and provides new data on the biology of this high-altitude Afromontane genus. It also presents the first diagnosis of this genus based on larval characters and examination of its systematic position in a phylogenetic context using 78 parsimony informa- tive larval and adult characters. Based on the results of our analysis we (1) support the hypothesis that the tribe Trichiini is paraphy- letic with respect to both Valgini and the rest of the Cetoniinae, and (2) propose that the Trichiini subtribe Cryptodontina, represented by Coelocorynus, is a sister group of the Valgini: Valgina, represented by Valgus. The larvae-only analyses were about twofold better than the adults-only analyses in providing a phylogenetic resolution consistent with the larvae + adults analyses.

The immature stages of S. orientalis Ricchiardi, 2008 and S. jansoni are described here for the first time and updated observations on distribution and ecology of both species are provided. In the neotropics in particular, there are far less studies than in other biogeographic regions. In part due to this lack of knowledge, cetoniines are not considered indicators of habitat quality in the Neotropical region. In this study, we compare the abundance, diversity, and species composition of cetoniines in three different habitats in Brazil: two exotic (Brachiaria pasturelands and eucalyptus planta- tion) and one native (Brazilian Atlantic Forest). We also provide diagnostic images of both sexes and of the genitalia of males of all species to facilitate species identification in further studies. The beetles were collected weekly from September to December 2012 with traps baited with fermented fruit, in five eucalyptus plantations (Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden), five exotic pasturelands (Brachiaria spp.), and five patches of Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The abundance and diversity of cetoniines was found to be lower in the eucalyptus plantations and about the same in the forest and pasturelands.

Furthermore, we describe the third species in the genus Archedinus Morón & Krikken, 1990, and fi rst one known from outside of Mexico, A. antoshkai Seidel & Arria- ga-Varela sp. nov. from Cerro las Minas, the highest mountain in Honduras. We provide an updated determination key for the species of Archedinus. The new species is compared with Archedinus howdeni Morón & Vaz-de-Mello, 2007, the most similar species in terms of genital and habitus morphology.

In Brazil, 72 species and 24 genera are recorded. Little is known about this family in the Central region of Brazil, and no research has previously been conducted in the ecologically important Cerrado biome. In this study, we evaluated the diversity and temporal variation of the Cetoniidae in an area of the Cerrado in the Federal District (Brazil) and verified whether the abundance and species richness were influ- enced by climatic variables. The study was carried out in an area of Cerrado sensu stricto at Agua Limpa Farm in Brasília/DF. Beetles were collected weekly from October 2013 to September 2014 using 40 traps baited with banana and pineapple fermented with sugarcane juice. A total of 398 specimens comprising 8 genera and 15 species were collected. We observed temporal variation in abundance and richness of the Cetoniidae in direct relation to the climatic characteristics of the Cerrado, with a greater number of individ- uals and species appearing in the rainy season. Climatic variables such as temperature and humidity appear to have a significant effect on the diversity of Cetoniidae.

Labandeira Department of Paleobiology, Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC 20560; [email protected] KEY WORDS; fossil record, Paleozoic, herbivory, detritivory, coprolites, gut contents, insects, plant-insect interactions ABSTRACT Although research on modern plant-arthropod associations is one of the comer- stones of biodiversity studies, very little of that interest has percolated down to the fossil record. Much of this neglect is attributable to dismissal of Paleozoic plant-arthropod interactions as being dominated by detritivory, with substantive herbivory not emerging until the Mesozoic. Recent examination of associations from some of the earliest terrestrial communities indicates that herbivory probably extends to the Early Devonian, in the form of spore feeding and piercing-and- sucking. External feeding on pinnule margins and the intimate and intricate association of galling are documented from the Middle and Late Pennsylvanian, respectively. During the Early Permian, the range of external foliage feeding extended to hole feeding and skeletonization and was characterized by the pref- erential targeting of certain seed plants. At the close of the Paleozoic, surface fluid feeding was established, but there is inconclusive evidence for mutualistic relationships between insect pollinivores and seed plants. These data are gleaned from the largely separate trace-fossil records of gut contents, coprolites, and plant damage and the body-fossil records of plant reproductive and vegetative struc- tures, insect mouthparts, and ovipositors. While these discoveries accentuate the potential for identifying particular associations, the greatest theoretical demand is to establish the spectrum and level of intensity for the emergence of insect herbivory in a range of environments during the Pennsylvanian and Permian.
