Madonna's Fashion in Film “Desperately Seeking Susan” Madonna’s fashion in film “desperately seeking Susan” Why madonna was chosen for the film with little acting experience - When director Susan Seidelman cast Madonna as the title role in her 1985 comedy, Desperately Seeking Susan, the pop legend was still virtually unknown. “Madonna lived down the street from me,” Seidelman told the New York Times in 2010. - Madonna had no acting experience but was still chosen for the film, because Seidlman the director was captivated by her presence and personality, even more important, her STYLE.. - Madonna’s attitude is what makes Susan’s role in the film memorable. The movie demonstrates this point explicitly: When the envious-yet-sweet Fort Lee housewife, Roberta (played by Rosanna Arquette) buys Susan’s iconic gold jacket at a vintage shop and inherits her hatbox of clothes, she looks ridiculous — an unconvincing imitator. Susan’s carefree style feels real — and inseparable from Madonna herself. Movie costume designer(Santo Loquasto) sought inspiration through Madonna’s closet - The movie’s costume designer, Santo Loquasto, reportedly sought inspiration for Susan’s wardrobe in Madonna’s own closet, which isn’t surprising: Susan’s haphazard, blinged-out, heavily cropped ensembles seem right in line with Madonna’s ‘80s vibe (her album Like a Virgin came out shortly before the film’s release). Susan’s style is impulsive and indulgent — she casually steals heirloom earrings and walks out of a thrift shop wearing the bedazzled ankle boots. Susans iconic gold jacket throughout the movie Bedazzled ankle boots/lots of leather bracelets Lace cropped mesh top Madonna’s style defined the look of the 1980s and as it did in “Desperately Seeking Susan” - Madonna was cast in this film because of the look and feel they wanted to bring to the movie. Her style defined the look of the ’80s, and Desperately Seeking Susan serves as the perfect lookbook for the era. - In desperately seeking Susan all the classic pieces that come to mind when you think of 80’s fashion. For example: Capris, leggings, blazers, and bold colors were featured in almost every outfit. Daring pieces, like cropped tops, parachute pants and mesh tops https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=3TAoWo3kBkw - Madonna’s accessories - Madonna’s signature gloves and hair bows are present in almost every scene, as are stacks of bangles, piles of necklaces, headscarves, and studded boots. To allude to the movie, rock Egyptian-inspired jewelry and brightly colored lipstick as well. Madonna’s fashion in the 80’s is coming back today she came up with a new line called “material girl” inspired by the 80’s - Madonna and her 13-year-old daughter, Lourdes, are introducing a line at Macy’s that recalls the leather-and-lace days of the 1980s. - Called, of course, Material Girl, the line is starting with clothing, shoes, jewelry and handbags, and Macy’s plans to add other categories like fragrance next year. Meant for teenagers on a budget, the items are less than $40, on average - Nearly all the items so far summon ’80s flashbacks. - “It’s a little ‘Desperately Seeking Susan.’ It’s got references from things you’ve seen Madonna wear,” Ms. List said. - Work cited Borrelli-Persson, Laird. “What Desperately Seeking Susan Got Right About Fashion.” Vogue, Vogue, 25 Aug. 2019, www.vogue.com/article/what-1980s-movie-desperately-seeking-susan-got-right-about-fashion. • Colorful Crystals & by Michael Harbridgeclay Hen I Started Doing Ceramics 40 Years Ago, Many Unusual Glazes and Finishes Existed That You Simply Don’T See Any Longer
for the classroom Colorful Crystals & By Michael HarbridgeClay hen I started doing ceramics 40 years ago, many unusual glazes and finishes existed that you simply don’t see any longer. Raise Wyour hand if you remember Dust Away colors. Utopia glazes, anyone? And how about those red glazes that rarely turned out unless you applied them perfectly! Reds have come a long way and are now easy to use. Dust Away colors are missed, but the dust they created probably was not the healthiest. And thank goodness Utopia glazes went away! Now, who remembers crystal glazes? Back in the day, no macramé hanger was complete without chunky beads and matching pots with bright, colorful crystal glaze finishes. It was like magic in the kiln when these flowing, mysterious glazes erupted with color in the firing process. I think we had a different color frog scrubby holder for every day of the week. I know some of you are having flashbacks! While crystal glazes have never entirely gone away, they’ve certainly made a resurgence recently. Over the past 40 years, many crystal fin- ishes were discontinued. Ceramichrome (I’m dating myself here) introduced Jungle Gems, and artists thought they were the most amazing product. But it was new to the artists that were new to ceramics. I recall Mayco introducing Elements Chunkies, and suddenly they had invented this remarkable new line that could be combined with other products to give rich, flowing pottery finishes. It was a brilliant way to market, well, crystal glazes. Duncan recently added new neon crystal glazes.

  • The MTV Generation: 1980S Fashion
The MTV Generation: 1980s Fashion Nicole Chichilitti Keywords: 1980s fashion / American Style / Madonna / MTV / music videos / Olivia Newton John Abstract This is the story about Monica LaSalle’s style journey through the 1980s. The fashion and trends of the decades made a significant mark on American popular culture as well as the fashion industry as a whole. Using interviews with Monica, as well as popular culture media such as music video and television shows, this essay will analyze whether or not Monica was on trend at the right time. In particular, I will focus heavily on the introduction of the Music Television channel (MTV) and the effect that its music videos by featured artists, Madonna and Olivia Newton, had on Monica’s sense of style. The Birth of MTV On Saturday, August 1, 1981, the youth of America eagerly waited in front of blank television sets for history to be made. At 12:01 a.m., images of the launch countdown for the spaceship Colombia and the launch of Apollo 11 flashed across the screen as a voice, very matter-of-fact, read: “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” It was the birth of MTV. The first music video featured was appropriately titled “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles. This marked the beginning of a 24-hour loop of music videos, where enthusiasts young and old could tune in to catch their favorite musicians in action. MTV’s target audience was teenagers, specifically from the twelve to nineteen age range. The channel dubbed these viewers the “MTV generation” (Greenberg 153).
