2019 Jim Sharp – Boys Indiana High School Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Historian Compiled by: Linda (Ludlow) Horn Indiana High School Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Historian (317) 839-5461 / (317) 753-1391 Cell [email protected] History of IHSAA Boys Swimming Championships From 1928 thru 1930 the boys’ state finals were not sponsored by the IHSAA and were by invitation only. Columbus High School hosted these three meets won by Indianapolis Shortridge, Whiting, East Chicago Washington respectively. The Decade is: In 1931 the first annual IHSAA sponsored Boys Swimming and Diving State Championship was held at Columbus High School (60 ft. pool) with 10 teams participating and South Bend Central claiming the team title. The events contested in the first championship included the 160 yard relay, 40 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, 220 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke, and the 120 yard medley relay (40 yd. each of backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle). Fancy diving was also an event, consisting of a running front, standing back, running front jack knife and a standing back jack knife. The 1932 meet was held at Butler University (75 ft. pool) with 11 teams competing. The 1933 meet was held at the Whiting Community Center (60 ft. pool). In 1934 and 1935 Butler was once again the site. The 1936 and 1937 state meets weren’t even held in Indiana. The IHSAA allowed Hammond High School to host the meet which was then moved to Thornton Fractional High School in Calumet City, Illinois due to a “better pool facility.” (60 ft. pool) In 1938, the state meet, again was hosted by Hammond High School at the brand new Hammond Civic Center (75 ft. -

SWIMMER’S NEWSLETTER FOR PRINCETON TIGER AQUATICS CLUB Tigers are Back in the Pool! by: Aditi Pavuluri It’s been a strange past few months for swimmers across the country, and one of the few times in history where there have been no competitions or practice taking place. The Olympics were postponed for the first time ever, and competitive swimmers across the globe are wondering when they can start competing again. As of two weeks ago, swimmers have taken to the pool for the first time in months. To pass the time, they’ve been working out over Zoom, and doing as much work as they could while still socially distanced. By working on technique, starts, turns, and speed, the Tigers have been trying to get in as much swimming as they can to make up for lost time. It will be a fresh start for us, and a way to start using muscles that haven’t been awoken in months. And though we’ve been staying in shape, we might not necessarily have been staying in swimming shape. Getting back into the pool is something that every swimmer is having to experience, and know that we’re in this together. So right now is the perfect time to improve on something that you’ve been holding off on during competition season. Our perspective might have to change from “getting back to where we came from” to “how far we can go”. Take advantage of this new and unusual time to better yourself as a swimmer. Go Tigers! J U N E 2 0 2 1 PVS ATHLETE'S NEWSLETTER Editors: Sophie Elliott, Lauren Clark, Georgia Yang Olympic Trials Recap Lawrence Sapp Paralympic Trials As you may have seen, there were some exciting swims the past week, including some pleasant surprises along with a few bittersweet “upsets”. Some highlights over the meet include the women's 100 fly, where we saw two teenagers, Torri Huske (18) and Claire Curzan (16), punch their tickets to Tokyo, the women’s 200 breaststroke featuring two teammates, Lilly King and Annie Lazor, battle it out for first, the men’s 100 breaststroke where Michael Andrew made his first Olympic team, only to qualify later on in the 200 IM and 50 free, and many more. In addition to this, we saw eight DMV natives sign Tatum Wall the drum: Torri Huske (Arlington, VA), Townley Olympic Trials Haas (Richmond, MD), Andrew Seliskar (McLean, VA), Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, MD), Phoebe Bacon (Chevy Chase, MD), Chase Kalisz (Bel Air, MD), Andrew Wilson (Bethesda, MD), and Lawrence Sapp (Waldorf, MD)! The Olympics will begin on July 23rd and last until August 8th, but events for swimming will only be from July 24th to August 1st. Be sure to look out for these swimmers in Tokyo! Abby Carr Olympic Trials Mental Health In Team Bondings Swimming With summer upon us, we now have much more free time than we did Swimming, like a coin, can be two faced for during the school year. The time is competitive swimmers. Some days, the waves are now to go hang out with fellow calm and pulling through the water will fill your heart teammates and say hi to some you up as you laugh with your teammates. -
