Dream Teams” Started to Appear Across Our Rugby Pages
Forward by Karen Ratcliffe At the beginning of the lock down a number of “Dream Teams” started to appear across our rugby pages. I asked my dad to write one, who grumbled a bit (as is his way nowadays!) but took to the task and produced more than I thought he would. His Dream Team spans many generations of friends and childhood heroes from both codes of rugby. He does say that you would have to be fairly ancient to remember a lot of the players, but I have put links where I can, to the player’s biographies. If it gives a few of you something to read, and hopefully enjoy, in this time of uncertainty, he will be pleased. Introduction My dad is Don Bramley 86 years old this year. Farmer, photographer, author, writer of letters, historian, ex-rugby player, adventurer and so much more. You will see him, most Saturday afternoons at the rugby club, camera in hand, taking pictures and chatting to anyone that will listen to him. He can’t remember what he told me the other day, but his recollection of stories, events and people is, phenomenal. He has written a diary since he started school in 1945; we have boxes and boxes full of photographs and a similar amount of interviews with local people, with a tale to tell, recorded on C60 cassettes, and nearly 150 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and photographs. Plus another 100+ of rugby, cricket, Sherburn church, flying, farming and Drax. I don’t think our family connections are as big as the Adamsons, but here goes in a nutshell. -

1 On the 3rd June 2017 (Queens Birthday Weekend) Poverty Bay host East Coast Rugby Union in their annual Pre-Season clash, during this weekend a celebration of combined Poverty Bay & East Coast teams from 1955 through to 2000 is taking place. As I was making my first ever trip to Gisborne to experience this occasion I thought only it right to look into the rich history these two unions have had over these years. Especially this year, as on the day of the annual clash in Gisborne between Poverty Bay and East Coast, the 2017 British & Irish Lions open their much awaited tour of New Zealand in Whangarei against the NZ Provincial Barbarians. Since 1930 the combined team had played the “Lions” on several occasions with the 1966 clash the stand out as the combined side almost accomplished the pinnacle of a Lions scalp to only fall short with a score line of 6 – 9 in favour of the tourists. So with the help of many books and other research materials I have compiled the following details of the combined teams with full squad, team and scoring details in depth from 1955. We also cover briefly the games played pre 1955 in which several were with a mixture of teams combined with the inclusion of players from Hawkes Bay and Bay of Plenty. My hope here is to have a record that will spark debate and interest to those who may have forgotten the rich history that these two unions share Kevin Hare - RugbyHeartland.co.nz 2 Pre 1955 – (Hawkes Bay) /POVERTY BAY/EAST COAST COMBINED vs: 1950 British Lions 1949 Australia 1948 Hawkes Bay 1942 Otago 1949 Australia 1937 South Africa 1930 Great Britain 1925 New South Wales 1923 New South Wales 1921 New South Wales/South Africa POVERTY BAY EAST COAST COMBINED vs: 2000 Scotland 1992 Ireland 1990 Scotland 1989 NZ Maori 1978 NZ Maori 1977 Olympians/British Lions/Hawkes Bay 1971 Olympians/British Lions 1966 Bay of Plenty/British Lions 1965 NZ Maori/B.O.P/Sth Africa 1959 Waikato/British Lions 1956 Hawkes Bay/South Africa 1955 Australia 3 4 1955 POVERTY BAY - EAST COAST vs Australia Colours: Scarlet Selectors: Messrs. -

Herbert Laxon & the 1908 Bristish Lions Tour
KING HENRY VIII’s UNKNOWN ‘BRITISH LION’ Herbert Laxon & the 1908 British Lions tour to New Zealand and Australia by Peter Huxford Most Old Coventrians with an interest in rugby would quickly be able to name one of the school’s two ‘British Lions’: David Duckham. This dashing, leonine winger was a key member of the legendary 1971 triumph in New Zealand. Few, if any, would be able to name the other. It is not Peter Preece or Peter Rossborough. Neither of these splendid backs, Duckham’s contemporaries in England teams, went on a Lions tour; Preece, like Duckham, was unavailable for the South African tour in 1974. Nor was Andy Goode, England international in the professional era, selected in 2005 or 2009. Instead, we must go back well over a century, to 1908, for the involvement of Herbert Laxon, Old Coventrian, in a tour of New Zealand and Australia which, though the ‘Lions’ term was not formalised until 1950, was regarded as a Great Britain rugby union football team. Herbert Laxon was born in Coventry on 16th March 1881, the third son of Arthur Samuel Laxon and Hannah, nee Barton. The family was well‐established in Coventry as wholesale grocers, eventually trading under the name M.A. Laxon & Sons, the initials those of Arthur’s mother, Mary Ann, who was widowed in 1866 1. By the 1880s Arthur Laxon was specialising as a cheese factor. The 1881 census records the family (at this point Arthur, Hannah, and three sons: Ernest, Rowland and three‐week‐old Herbert) living in Gloucester Street, near the Holyhead Road. -

Just over 12 months ago I was freelancing at home, sitting on the OSA committee and fretting over numbers for the Girls’ Reunion. In that very short time I have proudly worn the Presidential Gong, become Head of Careers at School, attended numerous dinners, spoken to more than 100 people on several occasions and made many friends along the way. I have undoubtedly grown in the process. This is a very exciting time for School and the OSA. The appointment of Alison Bond as Director of Development and Alumni Relations and new systems in place at school means we now have better ways to keep in touch and reach out to Old Silhillians we have lost. This year has been one of co-operation and collaboration and we have worked hard to combine and streamline our efforts, particularly with communica- tions, to keep you up to date whilst minimizing overload or duplication. Progress in this area continues to be made. With auto-enrolment of school leavers into the Association we are delighted to wel- come all leavers into the Association and we would like to see more of our younger members using the facilities at the Clubhouse, be it in the sports arena or the social arena or both and at events.
