Cazzie Russell Biographical Information In 1962, while playing at Chicago Carver High School, Russell was named the Chicago Sun Times Boy's Player of the Year. A three-time All-American and two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, Russell led the Wolverines to the NCAA Final Four as a sophomore and again as a junior, when U-M finished as national runner-up to UCLA. Russell was named National Player of the Year as a senior, when he averaged 30.8 points per game, and helped Michigan to the Elite Eight. He completed his collegiate career with 2,164 points while leading the Wolverines to a three-year mark of 65-17 and three consecutive Big Ten titles. Crisler Arena, which opened in 1967, has been dubbed The House that Cazzie Built. Russell spent twelve seasons in the NBA. Russell was the NBA's first draft pick in 1966, and was named to the 1967 All-Rookie Team. He was part of the famous 1970 Knicks team winning the NBA championship over the Los Angeles Lakers. Russell played in the 1972 NBA All-Star Game while with the Golden State Warriors. While with the Lakers, he was the last player to wear #32 prior to Magic Johnson. In 1981, he returned to pro basketball as a coach in the Continental Basketball Association for the Lancaster (Pa.) Lightning. He guided his team to that league championship that season. Russell was the head coach of the men’s basketball team at the Savannah College of Art and Design for 13 seasons. Cazzie Russell was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of fame in 2011, and currently resides in Savannah GA. Q&A with Harvey Araton, author of When the Garden Was Eden: Clyde, the Captain, Dollar Bill, and the Glory Days of the New York Knicks How did being a lifelong Knicks fan help –or hinder—writing WHEN THE GARDEN WAS EDEN? I tried to approach writing the book with two different perspectives and voices. The first was as a reporter delving into the era of the Old Knicks and, once there, becoming reacquainted with a younger version of myself as a fan. The challenge was in striking an appropriate balance so that the book would be presented as a work of honest sports journalism but with the appropriate level of homage. These players were, after all, heroes of my adolescence and early adulthood. I believe a perfect example of the right mix is in the chapter that explores a confrontation between Willis Reed and Cazzie Russell, provoked by a racial profiling of Russell that led to him calling Reed an Uncle Tom. While the story is reported objectively and in context with the racial pressures of the time, the sub-text clearly portrays Reed as a man of unusual character and leadership skills. In my mind, he was always that, but one-dimensionally, seen through the prism of performance. I was grateful that my reporting upheld my boyhood views but it also gave me greater insight into Willis Reed the man. What was it like interviewing the players you once rooted for? In most cases, especially with the principal characters and some of the opponents, I had established relationships based on my newspaper career.

This jump ball is probably the most controversial play in the history of Western Kentucky University basketball. It occurred March 11, 1966, in Iowa City, Iowa, during the NCAA Mid-East Regional Semifinal game between WKU and the University of Michigan. The jump, at the free throw circle nearest the Western basket, followed a held ball between Western’s Craig Smith and Michigan’s Cazzie Russell. Here the action is represented in six negatives: N97 – With only 11 seconds to play and WKU holding a 79-78 lead, official Lou Eisenstein tosses the ball. Most observers agreed that the toss was not vertical, but angled slightly back over the head of Russell, who is in the white uniform behind Eisenstein. Other players are, from extreme left: Michigan’s John Thompson (25), WKU’s Steve Cunningham (55), Michigan’s John Clawson (34) and Oliver Darden (55), WKU’s Clem Haskins (22) and Wayne Chapman (10), Michigan’s Jim Myers (54) and WKU’s Butch Kaufman (21).
