4 5 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 WELCOME MESSAGE Dear friends of football, Winning the World Cup last year in Brazil was a dream come true both for Joachim Löw’s team and millions of fans – a dream and a huge success, which had its origins in the DFB’s approach to youth and talent development that has been in place for years now. Currently, the DFB employs something in the region of 1,800 coaches across 360 bases nationwide. It is there that talented players are developed and prepared for higher-level football. The youngsters pit themselves against the best players of their age group at the academies of the professional clubs and the DFB youth teams. We’re delighted that all of our youth teams, from our U 17s to our U 21s, have been able to qualify for their respective major tournaments this season under the guidance of our new sporting director Hansi Flick. This year’s FIFA U 20 World Cup in New Zealand offers a new generation the chance to showcase them- selves. Several players in this age group have already established themselves in the first team of their respective clubs. So rarely has a Germany U 20 side been able to call upon such experience. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to FIFA, as well as the local organising committee, for the excellent work they have put in during the run-up to this tournament. We are all looking forward to another wonderful festival of football. Wolfgang Niersbach PRÄSIDENT DES DEUTSCHEN FUSSBALL-BUNDES | PRESIDENT OF THE GERMAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION 5 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 6 7 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 VORSCHAU ERFOLG, ERFAHRUNG, ENTWICKLUNG 18.595 Kilometer liegen zwischen Frankfurt und Christchurch, wo die deutsche U 20-Nationalmannschaft mit ihrem Trainer Frank Wormuth ab dem 1. 8 9 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 8 9 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 10 11 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 FIFA U 20 WORLD CUP 2015 PREVIEW SUCCESS, EXPERIENCE, DEVELOPMENT 18,595 kilometres separate Frankfurt and Christchurch, where coach Frank Wormuth’s Germany U 20 side will play their first World Cup fixture on 1st June. It’s a journey to the other end of the world. And if we’re being precise, the journey didn’t start in Germany, but rather in Hungary – in Gyor to be exact, during the 2014 European U 19 Championship. Victories over Bulgaria (3-0) and Ukraine (2-0), as well as a draw against Serbia (2-2), meant that Germany topped the group, thus reaching the semis of the tournament and qualifying for the U 20 World Cup in New Zealand. That wasn’t enough for Marcus Sorg’s men though. They then beat Austria 4-0 in the final four, before Hany Mukhtar’s goal against Portugal in the final gave Germany their first title at U 19 level since 2008 and their fourth overall (one of which was won by East Germany). The tournament was a fantastic occasion for the young German stars and was an invaluable experience ahead of this year’s trip to the other side of the world. Ten members of the European U 19 Championship winning team are in the squad for this summer’s U 20 World Cup, including Hany Mukhtar, who grabbed the winner in the final. Every bit of experience in the squad could prove crucial in the quest to claim the title. “Experience in major tournaments is helpful, especially when it comes to youth teams. There’s a huge difference between playing for your club every weekend, and having matches every three days. It helps when you have experienced players in your ranks, because they already know what it’s like,” explained U 20s head coach Frank Wormuth.
