    ALICE IN THE CITIES Technically, ALICE IN THE CITIES is Wenders’s fourth film, but he himself often refers to it as “his first,” because it was during this film that he discovered the genre of the road movie. (It would later become the first part of his Road Movie Trilogy, together with WRONG MOVE and KINGS OF THE ROAD.) It was also his first film to be shot partly in the US and the first to feature his alter ego, Phillip Winter (Rüdiger Vogler). ALICE is often compared with Charlie Chaplin’s THE KID. In 1974 it won the German Critics Prize. The German journalist Phillip Winter wants to write a story about America, but is unable to accomplish anything but a series of Polaroids before disappointedly beginning his journey back home. At the same time, he reluctantly agrees to take little Alice (Yella Rottländer) with him, because her mother (Lisa Kreuzer)— whom he meets in New York on the day before his departure—has urgent business to take care of there. In Amsterdam, the mother then fails to appear as they had agreed, and so Winter and Alice set out to try to find Alice’s grandmother in the Ruhr region. During their search together, their initial mutual dislike gradually transforms into a heart-felt affection. He was a major representative of New German Cinema and the so-called Autorenfilm in the 1970s and 1980s, and an important artistic voice for the post-war generation. In addition, he became a celebrated figure in international cinema, making films in locations all over the world, and contributing to the genre of documentary as well as the development of the feature film. As film historians have noted, Wenders is notoriously difficult to classify in terms of cultural traditions or cinematic movements; thus exploring Wenders’s development as filmmaker implies looking at different aesthetic and narrative approaches to cinema, from auteur cinema to modern and postmodern film. His two most famous works Paris, Texas (1984), set in the desolate American West, and Wings of Desire (1987), a gripping portrait of the divided city of Berlin, encapsulate his wide-ranging scope and experimental power. Nine award-winning Wim Wenders feature films and a documentary will be screened for free every weekend at 4 pm starting this April 27 to May 26 at the Cinematheque Centre Manila. Wim Wenders (born 1945) came to international prominence as one of the pioneers of the New German Cinema in the 1970s and is considered to be one of the most important figures in contemporary German film. In addition to his many prize- winning feature films, his work as a scriptwriter, director, producer, photographer, and author also encompasses an abundance of innovative documentary films, international photo exhibitions and numerous monographs, film books and prose collections. He lives and works in Berlin, together with his wife Donata Wenders. Among Wim Wenders‘ awards are the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or in 1984 for his movie Paris, Texas, the Golden Lion at the 1982 Venice Film Festival for The State of Things, and won best director at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival for Wings of Desire. He has also been nominated three times for the Academy Awards for his films Buena Vista Social Club (2000), Pina (2012), and, most recently, The Salt of the Earth (2015).

    Press Release Berlin, June 14, 2018 Wim Wenders Instant Stories C/O Berlin will be presenting the exhibition Wim Wenders . Instant Stories from July 07 to September 23, 2018. The opening will take place on Friday, July 06, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Amerika Haus, Hardenbergstrasse 22–24, 10623 Berlin. “…a moment of surprise, a heartbeat of suspense… a ‘real and singular thing’... a little square photograph in its own frame… no negative, from which you could make duplicates, no files… ‘an original’: a true thing—not multipliable, not repeatable.” (Wim Wenders, 2017) Summer 1973. Toast, ham and eggs, ketchup, drip coffee, tomatoes, and an omelet: scenes from an American diner. The pictures show Wim Wenders’ breakfast. The subject matter is trivial, but the occasion was momentous: it was the first day of filming for Wenders’ road movie Alice in the Cities (1973). In the film, the main character wanders through America with an instant camera, the Polaroid SX-70. Prior to the camera becoming available in stores and its innovative technology making photographic history, the fledging Polaroid company had sent Wenders a prototype, and he incorporated it into his film’s narrative. Photography was part of Wenders’ life from an early age. He received a Leica from his father when he was just six years old. From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, Polaroids were his preferred photographic medium—a complimentary tool for research on his films and a daily companion. Wenders’ Polaroid photos are autobiographical, opening up windows into diffe- rent stages of his life.

It explores moving up and down streets and stairs, this way and that way, slow and fast. Moving eyes, walking feet, shaking trams and starting trains. Three different types of movement and their interrelations comprise the main focus of the text: the filming movement of the camera, the movement of the filmed body, and the movement of the spectator who is watching the film. I aim to visualise this structure and argue that it is the way in which these three relate to each other that determines the qualities of the city-image that is produced. My main intention here is to challenge the objectives of showing ‘real’ time and space in film. What I was on my way to Central Station, where I was planning are possible structures that effect a real representation to photograph something. As I felt that the tram I was of our city-experience? Also, what does such a ‘real’ sitting in started to move, pinhole camera shaking on representation of the experience of the city actually entail? my lap, I realized that it was actually this movement that interested me much more than what I initially planned I will start by comparing two different films in which to photograph.

PHOTO: ORION PICTURES/EVERETT COLLECTION Wim Wenders has been making movies since the late 1960s, which means the Museum of Modern Art had a lot to choose from when curating the career-spanning retrospective of his work that opens Monday. The German director is known for his existential road movies (“Alice in the Cities”), romantic dramas of lyrical melancholy (“Wings of Desire”) and Academy Award-nominated documentaries—such as the new “Salt of the Earth,” about Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. “The time is right for a number of reasons” to revisit his work, said Josh Siegel, film curator at the museum. Among them: Mr. Wenders has completed digital restorations on several earlier films that had been out of circulation and are ripe for fresh appreciation. The director will introduce screenings throughout the opening week, joined at times by a frequent collaborator, Austrian novelist and playwright Peter Handke.     Watershed April 2008 Podcast This month we focus on two European auteurs – Austrian Michael Haneke and German Wim Wenders. We are opening Haneke’s remake of his original 1997 Funny Games and with Wenders’ we are screening a retrospective of his earlier work to tie in with the reissue of Alice in the Cities. If I have my facts right then there have been copyright issues with Wenders early German films that have prevented them from getting exposure either in cinemas or on DVD. I guess this must have been resolved. I first saw Alice in the Cities in the early 1980s at the brilliant Scala cinema in Kings Cross in London – a cinema committed to repertory unlike any other – and still sorely missed. At the time I was studying film at Bulmershe College in Reading (as an aside there was only a handful of places then that you could study film to degree level. Bulmershe was one of them and with people of the calibre of Doug Pye, Jim Hillier, Laura Mulvey and a young turk by the name of Stuart Cosgrove – no relation by the way – it was an excellent place to learn about film). London was a 40 minute bus trip away and I and fellow student Andy Willis – now Dr Willis of Salford University – would schlep up to London to see, for example a Wenders triple bill. It was on one of these occasions that Alice in the Cities came into my cinematic orbit – a quite brilliant experience, leisurely paced about a photographer who realises more about himself through his relationship with a young girl as they travel.

With Harry Dean Stanton, Dean Stockwell, Nastassja Kinski, Hunter Carson. Winner of the 1984 Palme d’Or at Cannes, Paris, Texas is a road movie like no other, a meditation on the American West that is at once mythic and vernacular. The film’s stark, spare dialogue, written by Sam Shepard and L.M. Kit Carson, is perfectly keyed to Ry Cooder’s haunting slide- guitar score and Robby Müller’s cinematography, which recalls the paintings of Edward Hopper and the 1970s New Topographics photography of Robert Adams and Lewis Baltz. Played with a laconic intensity by Harry Dean Stanton, Travis Henderson is one of Shepard’s most poignant creations, the distant stranger trying to make right as he travels across the unforgiving Texas desert of dusty gas stations and flickering neon to reconnect in Los Angeles with a son he hasn’t seen in years (Hunter Carson), and then on to Houston in search of his estranged wife (Kinski). The film culminates in a set of iconic monologues between the erstwhile lovers that take place on either side of a peepshow booth; though separated by a one-way mirror and cheap insulation, they see each other with a despairing clarity.
